To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

What I find funny is all the people who wouldn't have a short haircut, yet always have their hair in a ponytail. Many times I have seen someone and thought how lovely they looked with short hair, only to find when I get closer that they have a ponytail. Also, what is the point of having long hair if it is always tied back Confused

As for all those who are being rude about "Karen" haircuts - you get very defensive if people say long hair is not always flattering, but feel you can judge others for their hairstyles? (No, my hair doesn't look like the short cuts pictured).

As I said in my first post, long hair can look lovely, but so many people don't maintain it (the "I only go to the hairdresser once a year" brigade for instance), or have the sort of hair which doesn't suit being long.

@ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble

Karen/I want to speak to the manager haircut. Shouldn't be conflated really but I'm not going into that debate.
Yeah, that one.

I had a crop at 24 and it looked gorgeous, suited my face. Made the mistake of thinking it would look good at 45 too. It looked horrible because my face had changed. I’ve had long hair ever since because it suits me better now.

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 20/07/2020 21:02

Short hair is annoying. Needs cutting more often and hard to keep tidy.

Even when my hair is shortish like now, it's more convenient to tie it up.

AwkwardMoment2020 · 20/07/2020 21:09

The thing with long hair is that it’s versatile. Properly short hair is just...short.

With long hair you can make it look short by having sleek buns or even having an “asymmetrical ” style by sweeping it all over to a side bun. You can pile it on top of your head, straighten it, curl it, wear it down or half up half down, do endless varieties of French and Dutch plaits and braids, space buns, 40s waves, 60s beehives, hippy type styles...anything.

Short pixie style hair is nowhere near as versatile, you can ruffle it this way or that, stick a band or clip in it, but there’s a huge variety of styles that you just can’t do.

Ilovegreentomatoes · 20/07/2020 21:11

I hate all this Karen haircut bullshit. It's just someones weak attempt at being funny, plus the cuts that were put out as an example are fine in my opinion. Ppl don't like nasty comments about long hair but think other cuts are fair game to poke fun at.

And just to show I'm not jealous @ladytremaineswig your long hair is stunning.

I have short hair precisely because i dont want to do all that stuff

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 20/07/2020 21:21

I posted the pictures as two posters asked. As I said, I'm not getting into that debate.

BitOfANameChange · 20/07/2020 21:26

I really do like long hair on men, so long as it's properly maintained.

Ex has long hair. He didn't wash it often enough (less said, the better), yet would ask me to plait it for him (he couldn't be arsed to learn how, when, as he said, I was there to do it for him....). I hated touching his hair, especially close to when I left, as it felt so greasy. He didn't use to be like that in the early days, and I loved his hair then.

AwkwardMoment2020 · 20/07/2020 21:29

And I have long hair because I like to easily and be able to experiment and be creative with my hair on a day to basis. It take 5 mins tops to have a totally different look.

I appreciate not everyone is inclined that way. But in honesty I posted what I did in response to posters moaning about “what’s the point of long hair if you tie it back/put it in a bun.” Well sure, for work I’ll mainly tie it back but I’ve got about 50 different options minimum for the weekends, going out, events etc. I just wouldn’t have that with hair shorter than a few inches below shoulder length. So yeah, joe bloggs on here might see me with a ponytail or bun and think “why doesn’t she just have short hair”? but I might just be on my way back from the gym and an hour later I’d have a totally different look. It’s not worth giving up all that for short hair for me. I’d be bored stiff with it after two days!

SerenDippitty · 20/07/2020 21:31

I don't mind long hair on men but it is a huge turn off if it is straggly and greasy looking.

DaveMinion · 20/07/2020 21:32

I don’t give a flying fuck what men think about my hair. I have long hair cause shot hair doesn’t look good on me. Just about shoulder length is the shortest i would go and that looks not bad but I need to have my hair up for work (I work in a hospital) so it needs to up.

My mum cut my hair short short when I was 4 and it’s been long ever since. She’s a hairdresser btw so did all my hair cutting as a kid.

RandomUsernameHere · 20/07/2020 21:33

For me, long hair is much lower maintenance than short. Fewer trips to the hairdresser, no need to style/blowdry it etc

Yes, I appreciate that

Most of my friends With shoulder length hair only have two styles...down and up

I only have one friend with proper long hair and I don’t think ive ever seen her hair other than ponytail or down

But if you enjoy ‘playing’ with styles then it would Obviously be much easier with long hair 😀

I can do flat or spikey...i could probably squeeze a third in if i had a jolly hard think

BinkyBoinky · 20/07/2020 21:35

My bad for saying "Karen". I meant the "Speak to the Manager" haircut. But we all know it's called the Karen - I don't know why. I didn't invent it.

Womblesmurf · 20/07/2020 21:38

I keep my hair long because I need to cover up massive ears. We're talking Dumbo level. I would love to have short hair, but unfortunately I'd look ridiculous 🐘

TheoneandObi · 20/07/2020 21:40

Ooo what constitutes long? I've had my hair pixie cut (big mistake bc it coincided with my wedding) and down to mid-back. I'd say mine suits best at shoulder length. I consider this to be long bc most of my life my hair has been shorter. But my DD says it's short!

If you don't know why then why use it?
Aragog · 20/07/2020 21:54

I prefer long hair in myself. It needs less maintenance generally and I can easily tie it up out of the way too.

MillieChant · 20/07/2020 21:54

I grow mine long because it's easier to manage and doesn't require regular hair cuts to stop it losing its shape. It just is. Plus it can be properly plaited and tied back to keep it out of the way as opposed to blowing in my face.

I might go to the other extreme and get a buzz cut at some point but otherwise, I'll keep it long.

Aragog · 20/07/2020 21:55

So basically my hair is longer because I'm fairly lazy when it comes to my hair. Lowest maintenance possible!

MitziK · 20/07/2020 21:56

@Doodar

Long hair on anyone over 40 looks awful. Shoulder length at most. Also women who still hang onto extra long hair look ridiculous.
My Mother had thick, wavy, very dark-almost black, shining hair until people like you got at her.

On her 40th birthday, she had it cut short and permed like her mother. She went from being my Mum to looking like an old lady, especially as she switched to pastel colours that didn't suit her olive skin and in the misshapen T-shirt/knee length skirt and nylon cardigans instead of fashionable shirts and brightly coloured trousers that made her look slim and, frankly, attractive. The only photo I've seen of her when I was little made her look glamorous and elegant. There have been no photos taken of her since because she looks like a hardfaced weeble. She needed longer hair to soften her bone structure.

I hated her haircut from the moment I saw it for the first time aged five and I still hate the cauliflower now.

I managed to get my bone structure from my father's side of the family. Which is great. I also got the fine hair from that side, too. I look like a skull with short hair, but I like shoulder length, because it works with my face shape and I can tie it back or put it up for exercise or formal events.

Two completely different face shapes, neither suit short hair.

Knob off with the ageism.

Phoebesgift · 20/07/2020 22:02

Do all the women with long hair not colour or highlight their hair? I have long hair too but have expensive and time consuming colour maintenance.
