To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch.What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

Charlize Theron & Rihanna look amazing with short hair.

SengaStrawberry · 20/07/2020 09:48

I have no idea. I’ve never ever had long hair. I must admit it wouldn’t even cross my mind to consider what a man might like my hair to look like.

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 20/07/2020 09:49

I struggle with the ‘absolutes’ on here

For some people short hair is easy and low maintenance

For some people long hair is easy and low maintenance

For some overweight people short hair looks good

For some overweight people long hair looks good etc

Its more to do with what your hair is like and your face shape rather than
an absolute

slugsaver · 20/07/2020 09:50

You guys are just lucky you have the choice.

I have alopecia and have to wear hairpieces.

They are expensive if you want them to look even somewhat approaching natural (at least £500 every 6 months plus they also need cut and coloured once).

You are constantly worrying if people notice, if it's cold enough to wear a hat, if you can wear a headband with this outfit to cover it a bit. Some people do notice and stare and comment.

My DP as well - if we are talking about men - I can tell he doesn't find me as attractive. He'd never say anything or treat me different bless him, but it's obvious, he can't hide it in his face, and it's very very hard not to constantly have negative thoughts about that.

I guess what I'm trying to say is be glad you have the choice, and wear your hair however you think suits you best.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/07/2020 09:50

"You are aware looks are subjective, right? That not everyone finds the same features attractive?"

That's only partly true.
There are objective standards of beauty for a given culture at a given time. There are people who would be considered beautiful by 90% of the population and the opposite for the least attractive.

Craftycorvid · 20/07/2020 09:50

I’ve had all lengths, from long to a number 2. Interestingly, I felt very strong with extremely short hair. I’ve never been considered attractive so possibly the aggressive hair was a but of a ‘fuck you’ statement? It didn’t especially suit me as I had a fat face. These days I’ve bra strap length hair and a fringe. During menopause my hair went through an awful droopy thinning stage which was upsetting as it had always been thick; it is recovering a bit now. These days I think the ‘fuck you’ message is to the ‘women over 40 shouldn’t....’ brigade (ok mainly women of my mum’s generation).

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 20/07/2020 09:50

I can style my hair quicker than dd can put hers in a ponytail for example

GinDaddyRedux · 20/07/2020 09:50

@Raimona

thank you. Again this is far better put but what I was trying to say.

I don't think this is a mandatory rule, and it's my lofty opinion that all women must be this way.

I was saying that its highly likely certain people choose a longer hair style as a result.

Unsurprisingly I think all women have the right to choose whatever the hell they want.

The problem seems to be that if I describe what I think motivates those choices, everyone wants to jump on me instead. Hardly unsurprising for AIBU where if someone gets close to the knuckle on any topic, the primary tactic is pile in on that person instead of face facts.
@heartsonacake

I'll start with five...

Charlize Theron
Winona Ryder
Natalie Portman
Keira Knightley
Rihanna
In your opinion ...

IrmaFayLear · 20/07/2020 09:51

I am always cold and like to wrap my hair round my neck. It’s practical to have an integral scarf!

As others have said, long hair is cheaper and unless you live at the hairdresser’s maintaining a chic pixie-type cut, hairdos are a bit (I’ll whisper it)... common .

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 20/07/2020 09:51

💐

Definitely

burninh · 20/07/2020 09:51

These women don't look good?! @heartsonacake

In every relationship I've been in my male partners have preferred my hair short.
My DH tells me all the time how sexy my short hair is.
And I've never been called a lesbian.

🤷

Not with short hair, no. I think short hair looks ugly.
JudgeRindersMinder · 20/07/2020 09:53

I have my hair longish because it grows so damp quickly that if it’s short it needs cut every 4 weeks and I can’t be doing with that

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 20/07/2020 09:54

i think short hair looks ugly

Just on women i assume

GinDaddyRedux · 20/07/2020 09:54

@Mydogisthebestest

Well yeah, of course it's my opinion. It's a bloody internet forum. People state opinions to convince others or suggest viewpoints.

From the looks of the photo posts that followed mine, it seems others agree.

I just named five famous women to refute the belief that no women look good with short hair.

If the premise was rephrased to "few women outside of a Hollywood grooming regime look great with short hair", then that's perhaps a different question entirely.

but that wasn't the question...

formerbabe · 20/07/2020 09:54

@slugsaver. That sounds really tough Flowers

I actually do prefer long hair on men too, but yes.
Evelefteden · 20/07/2020 09:55

I just think OP is plain old bog standard jealous tbh ...

GinDaddyRedux · 20/07/2020 09:55

@heartsonacake

You're entitled to your viewpoint.

I'm curious though if you genuinely think Charlize Theron for example looks "ugly" with that short hair. (such a horrible word but I'm using your term).

IrmaFayLear · 20/07/2020 09:56

There’s no point in showing celebrities who’ve just stepped away from the stylist.

You need to show people with a hairdo who haven’t had someone primping it five minutes ago.

I have long hair and this morning I washed it. The end. Haven’t even combed it. It looks ok!

GrouchyKiwi · 20/07/2020 09:56

@Ilovegreentomatoes

All I'm reading is I have long hair because I'm lazy....I always assumed longer hair would be more time consuming for washing/blowdry/brushing?
It might take longer to wash, but I don't have to do it every day like I do when my hair is shorter. Most days I don't even brush it, just run my fingers through while I put it up into a messy bun or ponytail. I usually only brush my hair after I've washed it. Grin
GinDaddyRedux · 20/07/2020 09:56

@heartsonacake

Also different question -

Do you think Lupita Nyong'o looks better with short or longer hair?

LonginesPrime · 20/07/2020 09:57

I think the OP has a point....

but it's been completely lost in the "men" argument she led off with. It's a facile argument that has ended up largely destroying anything interesting that could have been discussed.

It's clear that practical considerations and budget tend to guide other women's beauty standards - it's not about being submissively beautiful to men

Stupid OP - you fucked it up by asking the wrong question!

Clearly, if you wanted your post to be interesting to men, you should have phrased it differently. Oh wait...
