To think most women keep hair long to be attractive to the opposite sex?

It's always been said men prefer long hair it looks more feminine etc.
I know many women hate having their hair short and are devastated if their hairdresser cuts of more than an inch. What is the obsession with long hair? I have fine hair and cut it short because long hair looks crap on me but I'm definitely in the minority. Even women who look better with short hair because of their hair texture insist on keeping it long. Do you think that's because we are subconsciously taught mainly by men that long hair is more attractive. Plus all teen girls have that uniform ultra long hair there is no diversity. And no I'm not jealous because I have short hair!(well very short bob to be fair.)

"Tbh, unless you have killer bone structure, I think short hair makes all womens faces less attractive."

If you mean short like a pixie cut yes, but not for a bob.

SerenDippitty · 20/07/2020 09:38

I have A LOT of hair. And keeping it long weighs it down. I've tried a bob, I just end up with a massive bouffant.

Yes that’s what my bob looks like when I’ve blow dried it but that is what straighteners are for.

GinDaddyRedux · 20/07/2020 09:39

It's actually depressing how I post facts in black and white, and people then seize to tell me "what I actually meant was..."

It's such a shitty tactic on this board.

If I say that 50% or more people in the UK are overweight, it's just a fact. If I also say that there are hundreds of articles about fat women avoiding short hair, it's a fact - that's women writing about women. There are also of course plus size bloggers embracing the short hair too, if you're obsessed with counterargument.

My point is, if you don't like the facts, then sure, pile onto me and say "it's GinDaddy's opinion that larger women can't have short hair".

but that's not what I ever said. Ever.
@heartsonacake bit of a sweeping statement dont you think?
No, I don’t, because it’s based on my experience. I have never seen a woman, celebrity or otherwise, on which short hair looks good.

PuzzledObserver · 20/07/2020 09:40

I’ve always had short hair, so much easier to look after. Wash, brush, forget. Plus, since the menopause, longer hair makes me overheat.

I’ve never understood why so many young women keep their hair long - so much work!

Then you're stealing a living. Seriously.

Zaphodsotherhead · 20/07/2020 09:40

I have very very short hair. It's fine and wispy and has a curl, so if it grows longer I look like a poodle that's been poorly.

A few men have said to me that I'd look better with longer hair. My reply? 'Tough.'

Single and perfectly happy, thank you.

OleanderOllivander · 20/07/2020 09:40

My hair is very long and I'm no spring chicken. In the late nineties -Sliding Doors era - I had it very short, and loved it. (One of the few things I like about my appearance is that I have noticeable cheekbones!) There are two reasons why I don't have it short now. It's much more expensive and hard to keep looking good - as it is I have it cut cheaply and infrequently as a "model" for trainee hairdressers, and it's very hard for them to make a mess of it, but when it was short I often (with qualified hairdressers) came home with a version of it that I didn't quite like. The other reason, I'm afraid, is that increasingly few straight women have very short hair - I'm single and don't want assumptions being made about me that aren't accurate.

GinDaddyRedux · 20/07/2020 09:41

@Lweji

And if you had no idea what I wanted to say, why not ask me with a question? It's what people in my profession do.

Rather than draw inference from what I'm saying by using my sex as an indicator, which is what prejudiced people do.

Mittens030869 · 20/07/2020 09:41

I've had my hair long, short and everything in between. I used to have in permed during the 80s and 90s as that was fashionable then (I laugh at some old photos of me from that period Grin). More recently I've had it long and dyed blond, as that's popular now.

My DH has admitted that he liked my hair better the way I had it when we met (short, brunette, which is my natural colour). But I have a sneaking suspicion that it wouldn't look as good now, as I'm overweight now whereas I was very slim then.

But I like it long best, I think.

Loads of really unattractive women here

@MistyGreenAndBlue spot on, it’s about fashion.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 20/07/2020 09:41

I don't really do hairdressers because I'm lazy and not a fan of the cost either. My hair never goes past my shoulders anyways because all the abuse it gets.

I need a certain length because I work in a school and I have it up a lot because of lice and to stop children playing with it.

It's kinda wavy/curly but in a odd way so I have to straighten it when shorter which is more hassle and not good for it either.

Oh and the main reason.. I can't dye it all kinds of colours in the summer holidays and have them show properly.Grin

Cashmerebunny · 20/07/2020 09:42

I have long hair past where my bra strap is, I couldn’t care less what anyone else thought as to why I gave my hair long.

My hair is very thick and course, I keep it long because the weight of it brings it down and it’s easier to straighten. My hair would be a nightmare short, even shoulder length. I would love to have my hair shorter as you can do so much more with it, but I’m rubbish at hair so straightening it is the best I can do.

My BIL tells me I keep my hair long because i want to be like a Kardashain as it’s thick and dark (yeah right), my hair has been this style for longer than the Kardashians have been on the tv mate!

Lweji · 20/07/2020 09:43

Then you're stealing a living. Seriously.

If it makes you happy to think so.
And to think you didn't show any judgement about women's hair.
Be happy, then.

GinDaddyRedux · 20/07/2020 09:43

@heartsonacake

I'll start with five...

Charlize Theron
Winona Ryder
Natalie Portman
Keira Knightley
Rihanna

Zaphodsotherhead · 20/07/2020 09:43

Also, I had a chin length bob once. I looked like a fat hamster in a wig.

I'm actually quite slim but have a little round face that just doesn't suit hair around it. Grade 2, cut in on top, and if I look like a lesbian - who cares? I'm over 50 so nobody hits on me anyway.

DartmoorDoughnut · 20/07/2020 09:43

I’ve had my hair all lengths and I’m currently growing it out again because I always forget that it’s an absolute pain to not be able to just tie it up and go. Don’t really give a shit what anyone else thinks about it - I’ve been letting it go grey for the last few years - but it’s definitely easier when it’s up and out of the way!

Mydogisthebestest · 20/07/2020 09:44

If this isn’t your opinion then what is it?

I have reliably read that over 50% of women in the UK are found to be either overweight or obese. It is therefore highly unlikely that with such face shapes, people are going to go for a pixie haircut or bob that won't frame the face as well. I think this is the reality of it all, rather than the "it doesn't suit me as well as long hair". I think for these body types, long hair draws the eye away and provides an anchor point for a sense of style and self. And fair enough, makes sense.

Mydogisthebestest · 20/07/2020 09:45

Sorry @GinDaddyRedux

BilboBercow · 20/07/2020 09:45

What about lesbians with long hair? Are they secretly trying to attract men? I do absolutely nothing with attracting men in mind because believe it or not there are plenty of women who don't see bagging a man as the pinnacle of their achievements.

You are aware looks are subjective, right? That not everyone finds the same features attractive?

Because as much as I like some of the women on that list, and I’ve felt they were gorgeous at times, none of them have looked good with short hair in my opinion.

Raimona · 20/07/2020 09:46

I totally agree. Having less hair makes the face look proportionally larger, thus it often looks better on those who have a smaller face. Short hair also reveals the jawline, which is more likely to be aesthetically pleasing on younger and slimmer women. Long hair slims the face and makes it look longer and narrower, so is a good choice for large or round faces, as well as older faces because it conceals areas that might be starting to show signs of ageing. I don’t see why it matters whether the pp who pointed this out is male or female?

pregnancydiet · 20/07/2020 09:47

I had a short hair cut which suited me but was a complete pain in the arse. It had to be blow dried everyday or it wouldn't sit properly and couldn't be tied or clipped up.
My hair is quite long now and I spend a lot less time on it.

This.

I'm far too lazy to have short hair.
