Ok so this is somewhat lighthearted but myself and DH are constantly arguing about who is right.

....how do you make up squash?

One of us puts the water in first then adds the squash
The other one puts the squash in first and then adds the water.

How do you make it up and why do you do it that way? Water first or squash first?

I'm hoping to prove my way is the right way (😬)

I don't want to put YABU OR YANBU next to either as it'll out which way I do it!

So OP tell him when he makes your squash to stir it before giving it to you.

ThickFast · 19/07/2020 13:50

I do either depending on whether the breakers are nearest the squash or the tap at the time.

netflixfan · 19/07/2020 13:50

what is the difference between cordial and squash please?

nannybeach · 19/07/2020 13:51

I dont drink squash either, yuck, tea, water, (possibly wine!!) but squash first, otherwise it doesnt mix complety with the water.By the way where is the lime cordial, its gone again, (thats NOT for me, its for DH)

GotGameByThePound · 19/07/2020 13:51

I do it both depending on what I'm nearest.

If I grab a glass from a cupboard; squash first.

Glass from the draining board; water first.

Bouledeneige · 19/07/2020 13:57

Squash first obvs.

Apart from snobbiness I think the difference between cordial and a squash is that a cordial - like elderflower or lime is a syrup, whilst squash is a concentrate. But I may be wrong.

TinkersRucksack · 19/07/2020 13:59

Squash first. My grandmother always used to stir cordial into water and it used to freak me out, even as a toddler.

StuffThem · 19/07/2020 13:59

You could argue its the same @netflixfan but especially after the sugar tax I tend to think of squash as the no added sugar stuff that is usually a kid's drink, and cordial as something posher, made with fruit water and sugar only, that's more of a grown up drink, like elderflower cordial.

It also tends to be gloopier and harder to mix with water Grin

MyFartWillGoOn · 19/07/2020 14:36

I'm blown away by the posters who say they put water in first and can't taste the difference-I think you can even see the difference

Science is the only way to resolve this!

I'll make up one glass and get DH to do the other. We'll label them -"A and B" and see if dear posters can even see which is which.

I have to put DS down for a nap first and will ensure they're photographed against a white background and in the same style glass. This is, after all, legitimate science

And I'm not entering into the world of cordial vs squash and still vs sparkling water. That way lies madness!

Definitely squash or cordial first.
As an aside I hate it when people call squash 'dilute', just why?

Why wouldn’t you if that’s what you’re brought up calling it? I’d never heard of squash until I went to uni. Similarly, I couldn’t think of a synonym when the sandwich shop lady balked at me asking for a “bread cake”.
1000mangoesinabirthdaycake · 19/07/2020 15:31

We called it diluting juice where I grew up. I'd never think to call it squash. Juice first and then water btw. If he insists on doing it the other way then he should stir it. And wash the resulting spoon!

LouiseTrees · 19/07/2020 16:17

Following to see the results of the science

jessstan2 · 19/07/2020 16:23

Bouledeneige, I never knew there was any snob value in cordial as opposed to squash. I looked it up:

"The difference between a squash and a cordial is the concentration of fruit juice. Squash have at least 30% fruit, whereas cordial is normally around the 10 - 15% area."

I still don't get any snobbishness but don't generally drink either so it wouldn't bother me. I imagine it is just a matter of taste.

Oh, one exception: lemon and barley water which I love. I mix it either way but usually put the drink in before the water.

Nyclair · 19/07/2020 18:25

Squash first!

MsEllany · 19/07/2020 18:30

Squash first as any fule kno.

Those who do water first have been influenced by the adverts that do that as you get that aesthetic bloom of colour into the water.

RonnieBob · 19/07/2020 18:30

Water first as I can only tell by the shade of colour it turns to know if it’s enough.

GreenTulips · 19/07/2020 18:32

Husband says

Cordial for Squash
Fresh orange Juice for orange juice out of a packet -
Freshly squeezed orange juice for actually oranges

It’s not

It’s Squash or Juice - that’s it

LycraLovingLass · 19/07/2020 18:39

Squash first.

Alderaan · 19/07/2020 18:52

I use sparkling water so put the water in before the squash so that it doesn't fizz over.

BlackCatsRule88 · 19/07/2020 18:55

Squash first or it doesn’t mix properly!

WeMarchOn · 19/07/2020 18:56

Squash first

Leaspr · 19/07/2020 20:23

Squash first HOWEVER...I sometimes do it the other way around!

Confused does he pour the gin into the tonic water? Or the vodka into the soda?

I damn well hope not, or I'm reporting the thread 😂

Coffeeandcookies · 19/07/2020 23:39

I do water first - if I put the squash in first then it goes all bubbly when I added the water (yes, at high speed from the tap because I'm impatient!) and I have to wait to let the bubbles settle before I can finish filling the jug. I know I could add the water slower to avoid this issue, but there's no difference in the flavour so it's quicker doing it my way.
