Most overrated TV shows you’ve ever seen

Inspired by the overrated movies thread, and also because I watched True Detective S1 (or some of it, at least) during lockdown. Everyone I know, online and in real life, raved about it, said it was one of the best shows they’d ever seen, and so on.
I was bored to tears with it. Made it to episode 5 out of 8 before I gave up, even though everyone talked about the ending and how it all paid off. I just didn’t care about any of the characters - I know the nihilistic setting was the point, but there was nothing interesting to detract from it. The central mystery/crime was not intriguing. I also hate misogynistic shows that pretend their misogyny is there to illustrate how patriarchal the setting is, when it’s really just an excuse to have lots of naked women on screen.

Phew...

So, anyway, what are your most overrated shows/series?
@RHOBHfan I found The West Wing incredibly boring.
@Okeydokeypiginapokey ... gosh; just goes to show.

I honestly think it’s the best thing that’s ever been shown on TV by a country mile.

whattimeisitrightnow · 19/07/2020 20:25

@Lula11 The Sinner, how could I forgot! I was quite gripped by the first season: it wasn’t perfect, but it was entertaining enough. I felt like they could have done so much more with the premise of how women can be damaged by violence and trauma, and the fact that the result doesn’t always entail quietly weeping and then moving on. The incest subplot was unnecessary. I watched the first episode of S2 and thought it was rubbish, so stopped.

Call the Midwife - sentimental shite that bears no relation to the book
Strictly Come Dancing - couldn’t make my way through even one episode
Game of Thrones - see above

whattimeisitrightnow · 19/07/2020 20:28

Oh, another one: Big Little Lies. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, have rewatched it several times since first viewing. But that’s just it: it was enjoyable. It was good television.
It wasn’t ‘amazing’. The performances weren’t all that. The storyline wasn’t as outstanding as everyone seemed to think. The domestic abuser was a bit of a caricature in some ways, though I thought other parts of the abuse story were very well done. I feel like everyone else saw a sparkle that I couldn’t find.

Oh yes - Twin Peaks - yawn

shartsi · 19/07/2020 20:34

I am relieved that This is us has been mentioned. I am struggling with it, on episode 4 now. I won't feel unkind if I stop watching now.

Lula11 · 19/07/2020 20:39

@whattimeisitrightnow
Please watch the third series just for the wtf was that about at the end.
I googled what his motive was for about 2 hours to try and make sense of it 🤯
Even my sister who understands what the Matrix film was about had no idea.

Bluewavescrashing · 19/07/2020 20:41

This Is Us is OK. I've watched a couple of episodes today whilst cleaning and pottering.

I really couldn't get on with-
The Bodyguard
G o T
Peaky Blinders

Friends was a good tween watch for me with my friends so I look back on it fondly.

Lula11 · 19/07/2020 20:42

Yep.
Big little lies, bog standard fare.
This is us, they all seemed to have a lot of feelings about lots of things. Turned off after the second navel gazing monologue.

ArthurandJessie · 19/07/2020 20:44

Big bang theory
Friends
Gilmore girls

Cinders29 · 19/07/2020 20:49

Breaking bad
Mrs browns boys
Fleabag

gggrrrargh · 19/07/2020 20:49

I think I’ve only seen one vote for How I Met Your Mother.. the way Barney treats women in that show makes me angry and cringe at the same time.

I admit most shows I’ve not got in to was because I was watching them whilst playing on my phone at the same time and I trailed off.. anyone the same?

OLGADEEPOLGA · 19/07/2020 21:10

Breaking Bad

funinthesun19 · 19/07/2020 21:14

One Born Every Minute.

I don’t know if they even make this programme anymore? But I found it very difficult to watch. I definitely didn’t get excited about it like most of the country did.

APJ1 · 19/07/2020 21:27

I loved S1 of KE and even S2 had its charm. S3 was dire - such a shame.

I think I'm in the minority of Killing Eve viewers who really enjoyed the third season, as disjointed as it was, but thought S2 was awful, pathetic even.

SedentaryCat · 19/07/2020 21:37

Friends
Big Bang Theory
Breaking Bad
Mrs Brown's Boys

LaurieMarlow · 19/07/2020 21:48

I also enjoyed 3 much more than 2. While there were obvious weaknesses, the character development was very interesting and I loved the new additions (Dasha, Helene and all the bitter pill guys)

tinytemper66 · 19/07/2020 21:52

Game of Thrones
Friends
Sex and the city

babypossum · 19/07/2020 21:54

The Office.

LaurieMarlow · 19/07/2020 21:54

Those saying Friends and SATC, did you watch them for the first time recently?

For while they have not necessarily aged well, they are both incredible monuments to their time.

Pineapplemonkey · 19/07/2020 22:22

@RHOBHfan
I too am bemused by someone not liking the West Wing, it’s one of the best shows ever (it is literally on my tv as I type this) It’s so clever and funny and I never tire of it.

But hey what do I know, I loved Breaking Bad, Fleabag, Friday Night Dinner and Big Bang Theory.

Oh and whoever mentioned canned laughter on Big Bang you’re wrong, as with a lot of American comedies, it’s filmed in front of a live audience. I’d suggest the laughter is because they find it funny

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 19/07/2020 22:25

The Office
Love Island
BIg Brother
G of T
Mrs Brown’s Boys
However, I loved Fleabag!

Alicesweewonders · 19/07/2020 22:25

Fleabag & Luther - just awful

nineniiiine · 19/07/2020 22:49

You on Netflix. I was up for a trashy easy watch but didn't get the tone or the point of the show, it seemed to think it was much more clever and knowing than it actually was. Made it to the end of the first season but was begging DH to turn it off a few episodes into the second.

Breaking Bad - loved the first season then lost interest but in fairness I'm not a big fan of anything related to drugs in general, I find it a really boring basis for a plot.

Riverdale/Sabrina - again just didn't understand the tone of these shows, perhaps a cultural thing as they felt über American to me (and I know nothing about the Archie comics). Sabrina on paper should be something I'd love!

And I hated Tiger King and the casual misogyny that it excuses. Not since The Staircase have I watched such an aimless documentary.

Can't believe someone said X Files Shock I mean it was hit and miss in later series particularly but some episodes were pure genius!

nineniiiine · 19/07/2020 22:50

I thought I'd hate Fleabag but lots of it was very funny and the end had a proper emotional punch so I ended up impressed.
