Most overrated TV shows you’ve ever seen

Inspired by the overrated movies thread, and also because I watched True Detective S1 (or some of it, at least) during lockdown. Everyone I know, online and in real life, raved about it, said it was one of the best shows they’d ever seen, and so on.
I was bored to tears with it. Made it to episode 5 out of 8 before I gave up, even though everyone talked about the ending and how it all paid off. I just didn’t care about any of the characters - I know the nihilistic setting was the point, but there was nothing interesting to detract from it. The central mystery/crime was not intriguing. I also hate misogynistic shows that pretend their misogyny is there to illustrate how patriarchal the setting is, when it’s really just an excuse to have lots of naked women on screen.

Phew...

So, anyway, what are your most overrated shows/series?

Peaky Blinders

The Wire can be a challenge to get into and the second season is not the best but it gets better throughout.

Ozark definitely takes time to hook you - I started it a couple of times before I got into it. DH is watching it for the first time and we are heading for the end of S2 and he’s hooked now but it took a while.

I like BB but it is nowhere near as exceptional as people say.

I’d say The Shield or Fargo are far better than they generally get credit for, but even The Shield takes a bit of getting into and has a dud season (sorry Glenn Close) but if you gave up then you’d miss the best seasons of TV I’ve ever seen.

SoA I love but the entire season with the Ireland subplot just needs to go. Awful.

Breaking bad

whatshebininagain · 19/07/2020 15:17

Fleabag - I tried to watch it to see what the hype was about but only managed 15 mins or so, It was so unfunny.

Scene 1 -"You know when a guy calls you in the middle of the night and he comes round, has bum sex and thanks you in the morning" Er, no but I'll stay with it for now.

Scene 2 - Flirts with creepy guy on bus - no, just no.

Scene 3 - An excruciatingly unfunny scene with Hugh Dennis in a bank. Sorry, life's too short.

Whoever said it was self-indulgent twaddle is bang on.

SillyUnMurphy · 19/07/2020 15:59

Breaking bad. Such terrible acting.

I get that Breaking Bad isn’t to everyone’s taste but are you for real with this comment?

msbevvy · 19/07/2020 16:07

Mrs Brown's Boys
Only Fools and Horses

randomer · 19/07/2020 18:42

randomer · 19/07/2020 18:43

Fools and Horses.....loath every second of it.

YonBonnieBanks · 19/07/2020 19:19

Game of Thrones
Mad Men
Killing Eve (its not bad, its just okay)
Poldark
How I met your mother
reality tv shows

But I bloody love Fleabag, Afterlife, West Wing, Only Fools, Miranda, peaky blinders, Friends and Stranger Things!

Winniewonka · 19/07/2020 19:26

Gavin and Stacey
Broadchurch - First series had a ridiculous ending
Peter Kay's Car Share - I can laugh at everything else he's done but this I just couldn't get into

whattimeisitrightnow · 19/07/2020 19:50

Oh, I’m annoyed to hear that people didn’t like Fleabag - was planning to watch it at some point. As I said, I liked KE season 1 and I’ve heard people say that Fleabag is a more consistent representation of PWB’s work.

I watched Gavin and Stacey for the first time late last year (in preparation for the special!) and I loved it but parts of it didn’t age well... I think it’s widely accepted that the titular couple are shit and boring and you just have to focus on the wonderful side characters for amusement.

Saw Fleabag once didn't bother again. Yes thete was anal sex and talking to the camera....
The stepmother was funny though.

BenWyatt · 19/07/2020 19:53

Fleabag
Devs

Toomuchtooyoung01 · 19/07/2020 19:59

I may destroy you

JuneFromBethesda · 19/07/2020 20:06

I persevered so much longer with Killing Eve than I usually do with a new TV series - five tedious episodes I stuck it out for, but I STILL don’t understand what all the fuss is about. Drives me nuts that I don’tt get it 😩

NeutralJanet · 19/07/2020 20:07

I couldn't get on with Fleabag either, it just didn't click for me, I found it tedious.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 19/07/2020 20:07

Friday Night Dinner. My dc love it. My dh thinks it is very funny. I don't get it. I really, really don't get it.

Sex and the City. It seemed even worse now than it did then, and I never liked it much at all.

I'm quite picky about tv and films (which is not to say I am culture and highbrow, because favourites include Dirty Dancing and Farscape!) so often don't even bother to try series people urge me to watch. When everyone was freaking out about Lost I knew I wouldn't like it and one friend got so, so cross that I didn't want to watch it that one night he actually shouted at me in a pub, it was the most ridiculous moment ever.

shartsi · 19/07/2020 20:07

Killing Eve
Poldark
Normal people
Witcher
The Bodyguard

catbellz · 19/07/2020 20:09

@MilaRos

Tiger king!

Thank you!! Utter tosh, can't believe the hype around it.

Gindrinker43 · 19/07/2020 20:11

The Office, really not funny at all.
Every single talent show.

thepeopleversuswork · 19/07/2020 20:12

I’m quite shocked at how much people are dissing Breaking Bad. I loved it.

I never got into Friends. Just couldn’t gel with it. I rewatched it recently and still really nonplussed as to what people like about it.

Okeydokeypiginapokey · 19/07/2020 20:16

@RHOBHfan I found The West Wing incredibly boring.

Lula11 · 19/07/2020 20:18

The Sinner.
I sat through 3 series thinking maybe there’s something wrong with me as I’m not enjoying it and every man and his dog raved about it.
The first series has two sisters having sex infront of each other with blokes while staring at each other 🤢 and the third one has a normal bloke turning lunatic due to reading a few books on Nietzsche.
It felt like some incel creepy bastard had jotted down some of his fantasies and managed to get a series based on them.

fluffi · 19/07/2020 20:20

Game of Thrones
