Most overrated TV shows you’ve ever seen

Inspired by the overrated movies thread, and also because I watched True Detective S1 (or some of it, at least) during lockdown. Everyone I know, online and in real life, raved about it, said it was one of the best shows they’d ever seen, and so on.
I was bored to tears with it. Made it to episode 5 out of 8 before I gave up, even though everyone talked about the ending and how it all paid off. I just didn’t care about any of the characters - I know the nihilistic setting was the point, but there was nothing interesting to detract from it. The central mystery/crime was not intriguing. I also hate misogynistic shows that pretend their misogyny is there to illustrate how patriarchal the setting is, when it’s really just an excuse to have lots of naked women on screen.

Phew...

So, anyway, what are your most overrated shows/series?

Mad Men - Hours filled with boring men sitting in an office drinking and smoking talking crap.

rooarsome · 18/07/2020 20:06

Firefly. I did like it at first, but on subsequent viewings the writing is awful. The slut-shaming of Inara by other characters was terrible. I do enjoy the film Serenity though.

burnoutbabe · 18/07/2020 20:11

Who has claimed mrs browns boys is good ever?

I could not get into the wire, everyone said it got very good but after 5, I gave up.

True detective 1&3 were good in the end.

I wouldn't say over rated though, just did not appeal to me. I find west wing too fast paced for my tastes too.
I may destroy you is very well rated but hard going at times.

Game of thrones really improves as the seasons go on. The porno aspect diminishes and the ending is all in favour of brilliant female characters. I love it so have to respectfully disagree Grin

For me it would be

Afterlife not funny
Normal people snore fest

ChicCroissant · 18/07/2020 20:13

Fleabag

Skyliner001 · 18/07/2020 20:15

Fleabag
Normal people

iswhois · 18/07/2020 20:15

Breaking bad!!!! It was good but nowhere near as good as people made out

Friends - just not that good in my opinion

thecognoscenti · 18/07/2020 20:17

@RuggerHug

The Wire and Breaking Bad. Both sounded like shows I'd love and are considered amazing but didn't do it for me at all. Gave the wire into halfway through the second season, BB I think I was 4 seasons in (I was really hoping something would click) but nope.
The second series of The Wire is notoriously disliked by fans (it's not bad, it's just quite different from the first), so if you'd enjoyed the first series I'd say stick with it! Don't bother if not - life's too short
Puffinhead · 18/07/2020 20:18

@sst1234

Broadchurch. The storyline was so long drawn out, with a terrible ending. Series two was even worse. To be fair anything with Olivia Colman is unbeatable with the same acting no matter what the role - grimacing and talking really really fast.
You beat me to it! I’m very late to this - only just started watching as ITV are repeating it now. It is painfully slow. Can’t understand what all the hype was about. I’ve already looked up who did it on Wikipedia but have to stick with it as my DD15 is keen to watch.
ActualStork223 · 18/07/2020 20:18

Game of thrones (absolute fantasist shite)
Killing eve
Luther (too unrealistic)
Mrs browns boy (too 'the70s wants its show back')
Big bang theory
Afterlife
Bad education
Cuckoo - unfunny, ridiculous, boring nonsense
Jessica Jones
Shameless
Poldark
Breaking bad

Big school

Craiglang · 18/07/2020 20:21

The Office. I don't get the appeal.

annabel85 · 18/07/2020 20:22

Who has claimed mrs browns boys is good ever?

It's been BBC's flagship sitcom for the last decade.

KurriKawari · 18/07/2020 20:22

Fleabag. I'm one of those rare people who absolutely loved Crashing (watched it three times!) Couldnt wait to see what Phoebe did next and was left disappointed by Fleabag.

annabel85 · 18/07/2020 20:25

A lot of Breaking Bad votes.

The premise is ridiculous but it's great entertainment.

DappledThings · 18/07/2020 20:25

Normal People

annabel85 · 18/07/2020 20:26

@DappledThings

Normal People
Another porno
MamaGothel · 18/07/2020 20:26

Normal people. I kept waiting for something to actually happen but it was a couple of people living a very boring life- but maybe that was the point? I skipped the last couple of episodes so maybe that was where the action was.

Deadringer · 18/07/2020 20:27

Mad men. Dull
Game of thrones. Sexist tripe.
Ozarks. Daft.
Schitts creek. Shit
Lost. nonsense.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 18/07/2020 20:27

Dracula BBC
Read some reviews raving about it. I hated it, first episode was ok, 2nd episode was dodgy and the 3rd episode almost saw me turn it off after 20 minutes, by the end, I wish I'd had.

The OA
Watched the first season, stupid and ridiculous. That ending was the daftest shite I've seen in a TV show. Didn't bother with 2nd season.

Deadringer · 18/07/2020 20:28

And oh yes Mr. Robot and Jessica Jones. Crap.

MamaGothel · 18/07/2020 20:29

Royle Family
