Most overrated TV shows you’ve ever seen

Inspired by the overrated movies thread, and also because I watched True Detective S1 (or some of it, at least) during lockdown. Everyone I know, online and in real life, raved about it, said it was one of the best shows they’d ever seen, and so on.
I was bored to tears with it. Made it to episode 5 out of 8 before I gave up, even though everyone talked about the ending and how it all paid off. I just didn’t care about any of the characters - I know the nihilistic setting was the point, but there was nothing interesting to detract from it. The central mystery/crime was not intriguing. I also hate misogynistic shows that pretend their misogyny is there to illustrate how patriarchal the setting is, when it’s really just an excuse to have lots of naked women on screen.

Phew...

So, anyway, what are your most overrated shows/series?

Loved True Detective S1, couldn’t get past first episode of S2. Colin Farrell was crap.

Love Island

I’m a Celebrity

Ant and Dec in anything

Mrs Brown Boys

Friends after Emily/Ross wedding

TOWIE

Mrs Brown's boys
Later big bang theory
The mandolin

UnderperformingSeal · 19/07/2020 01:41

The Fast Show. All it did was make Harry Enfield seem funnier.

Witchcraftandhokum · 19/07/2020 04:10

ThomasHardy If you think Inara was slut shamed on Firefly you're watching it wrong.

BitOfFun · 19/07/2020 05:10

@Helendee

Any US ‘Comedy’, so puerile! I hate them.
Talk about an overgeneralisation!
victoria0132 · 19/07/2020 06:01

Can’t believe how many people on this thread have the impression that Mrs Brown’s Boys counts as a highly rated tv programme.Confused

trappedsincesundaymorn · 19/07/2020 08:07

Peaky Blinders
Mrs Browns Boys
Killing Eve
Friends
All "reality" programs

PuppyMonkey · 19/07/2020 08:12

Right next person to say Mrs Brown’s Boys gets kicked off MN.Grin

Toddlerteaplease · 19/07/2020 08:12

Last of the summer Wine, Eastenders, Coronation Street, Fr Ted, Mrs Brown, Only Fools and horses.

Mummadeeze · 19/07/2020 08:13

Only one I kind of agree with out of all of these is Killing Eve as I really struggled and gave up. Normal People was the best drama series ever for me. And I found Fleabag so funny. The thing is, I find it hard to criticise really popular shows because I realise it is subjective and they are still good even if they are not to my taste. However, if I have to pick, I would probably say any comedy with Peter Kay in because I just didn’t get it.

Spidey66 · 19/07/2020 08:14

Breaking Bad

LaurieMarlow · 19/07/2020 08:22

I still can't work out how it became so huge.

Extraordinary character development
Some really standout acting
The kind of narrative boldness and complexity you very rarely see.
Amazing battle scenes

LaurieMarlow · 19/07/2020 08:23

I’m also saddened to see Killing Eve on here as I love it so much, even though series 2&3 in no way lived up to the amazing series one.

AftonGlen · 19/07/2020 08:27

I loved the first 3 series of The Wire but think they should have stopped after 3- I was bored by most of the 5th series and couldn't wait for it to end.

I also thought Breaking Bad was brilliant at the time but actually think the spin-off, Better Call Saul, is miles better.

Shows I find overrated:
Tiger King - couldn't get past first episode
Sopranos- my partner raves about this, I just can't
The Bodyguard- found the first episode so utterly cringe worthy

mrsjg · 19/07/2020 08:27

The Big Bang Theory. It needs 'canned laughter' to show us when it's funny. It's not!

And don't even get me started on Sheldon Angry

AftonGlen · 19/07/2020 08:28

Oh and The Office. I'm not a fan of Ricky Gervais though

Twirlytwoo · 19/07/2020 08:33

Breaking Bad. Gave up after season 3.

whattimeisitrightnow · 19/07/2020 08:35

Agree 100% re Bodyguard. The leads had no chemistry whatsoever, storyline was predictable, and once the ‘twist’ death happens it becomes pointless.

Friday Night Dinner.

I suspect the people saying Fawlty Towers, Dads Army etc are too young to have seen them when they were first shown as they were of their time but compared to shows now may look tired.

That's many phrases from both those which are in popular parlance ”don't tell him Pike” ”you stupid boy” ”doomed, doomed” ”don't panic!” ”they don't like it up ’em” ”how lovely” and FT ” I come from Barcelona” ”he's a Siberian hamster” ”Que?” ”don't mention the war” etc. etc. Grin

whattimeisitrightnow · 19/07/2020 08:36

I loved S1 of KE and even S2 had its charm. S3 was dire - such a shame.

OneKeyAtATime · 19/07/2020 08:42

Breaking bad. Such terrible acting.

Killing eve. Highly irritating characters.

The stranger.

Mad men. Nothing happened in season 1. I gave up.

Schitt creek.

JillGoodacre · 19/07/2020 08:51

Breaking Bad - just boring
The Wire - tried 5 times and it's just too violent for me
Mad Men - smug and self satisfied
Lost - just why?
Blacklist - got stupid
Sons of anarchy - pointless
Walking dead - gave up halfway into season 4 as it was just repetitive

Strongly disagree with the Sopranos. Recently rewatched and it's the best thing made IMO.

Just started watching Succession which is looking good.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 19/07/2020 09:14

Can’t believe how many people on this thread have the impression that Mrs Brown’s Boys counts as a highly rated tv programme.

But at least it has won a Bafta which means that it is rated by "the establishment". It's the repeated mention of Love Island and other reality TV shows on this thread which annoys me - no one is rating them as good TV! How can they be overrated, therefore?! I mean, someone has mentioned TOWIE ffs!
