Most overrated TV shows you’ve ever seen

whattimeisitrightnow · 18/07/2020 19:46

Inspired by the overrated movies thread, and also because I watched True Detective S1 (or some of it, at least) during lockdown. Everyone I know, online and in real life, raved about it, said it was one of the best shows they’d ever seen, and so on.
I was bored to tears with it. Made it to episode 5 out of 8 before I gave up, even though everyone talked about the ending and how it all paid off. I just didn’t care about any of the characters - I know the nihilistic setting was the point, but there was nothing interesting to detract from it. The central mystery/crime was not intriguing. I also hate misogynistic shows that pretend their misogyny is there to illustrate how patriarchal the setting is, when it’s really just an excuse to have lots of naked women on screen.

Phew...

So, anyway, what are your most overrated shows/series?

@RHOBHfan and @Pineapplemonkey was The West Wing supposed to be funny? The comedy and cleverness went straight over my head. At that point in time I was also watching The Sopranos, Mad Men and The Wire. I loved those shows.

But The West Wing 🥱.

Crinkle77 · 19/07/2020 23:38

@nineniiiine

I thought I'd hate Fleabag but lots of it was very funny and the end had a proper emotional punch so I ended up impressed.
Didn't think much of the first series but loved the 2nd series. That could have had something to do with the gorgeous Andrew Scott. The chemistry between him and Fleabag was amazing.

I have up on Normal People after 5 episodes. Someone recommended This Country but it was bloody awful - just so not funny.

pennysea · 19/07/2020 23:46

Gossip Girl.

I don't want much TV anymore and if I see one episode and don't enjoy it I just give up. It takes a lot to keep my interest these days.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 19/07/2020 23:47

Game of thrones. I stumbled over it and couldn’t believe it was what people were raving about. I thought it was a bad comedy.

Doggybiccys · 19/07/2020 23:53

Sorry off topic - I love Thus is us - is it back on? It seemed to stop in the uk after season 2 when we found out how jack died and I am desperate to see it again!

Goosefoot · 20/07/2020 00:15

Lots of the same ones as others for me.

Killing Eve is #1 for sure, people seem to have thought it was completely amazing, and while it was stylish it was clear it was utter drivel by episode 3.

Others that seemed promising but were disappointing to me were Peaky Blinders and Luther. Just style over substance and cray plotting and characters to try and make an impression. Ripper Street succumbed to the same problem but maybe not quite so quickly. It suddenly became super-anachronistic toward the end too, with the "good guys" all having very modern attitudes to controversial issues.

GoT is interesting - I think it was almost a different experience for those who had read the novels and those who hadn't.

TargaryenBean · 20/07/2020 00:15

Sons of Anarchy - so cheesy
Normal People
Mad Men

JovialNickname · 20/07/2020 00:45

This thread has made me wonder what people mean exactly when they say that something is overrated. If it's not for them or doesn't appeal to their taste, sense of humour or what they want from their entertainment then I totally get that! But if they're just saying something is unadulterated shit then that confuses me. After all someone might not like the Sopranos or Fleabag and that's fine. But suggesting they have no artistic merit at all is weird, and untrue? Athough I understand in this Trumpian era that some people like to think of themselves as "edgy" by going against critical analysis and common sense.

BitOfFun · 20/07/2020 03:55

Good point, JovialNickname.

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 20/07/2020 04:40

I couldn't get on with fleabag. I really wanted to like it but I just didn't

GetOffYourHighHorse · 20/07/2020 08:45

'Athough I understand in this Trumpian era that some people like to think of themselves as "edgy" by going against critical analysis and common sense.'

What a bizarre thing to say. It's nothing to do with being 'edgy' or a 'trumpian era'.

Overrated tends to apply to things that get lots of praise that in someone's opinion isn't justified. So, for example to say killing Eve is overrated means it actually isn't very good, so therefore is overrated. Imo. I'm not edgy Grin.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 20/07/2020 09:58

Overrated

Critics score it 10/10 as a perfect movie / TV show / book etc.
It people score it 10/10 too.
Then average Maureen watches it and thinks it's awful.. so to Maureen, that product is overrated.. like Citizen Kane.. 😝

CandidaAlbicans2 · 20/07/2020 14:39

Breaking Bad - I loved the story line/idea but only watched a few episodes before I lost interest

Killing Eve - watched a few episodes but it didn't grip me enough to continue

Luther - found the cliches and lack of realism very irritating so gave up

Miranda - didn't find it funny at all, just cringeworthy

Fleabag - apparently it's supposed to be a comedy but I didn't laugh once

hellsbellsmelons · 20/07/2020 15:51

I'm really shocked by a lot of these.
But I guess we all have different tastes and sense of humour.
It makes the world go around.
(but you are all mad! Grin )

Wannabegreenfingers · 20/07/2020 16:20

Sons of Anarchy. Horrible people making terrible decisions, over and over again. Just unrelentingly miserable.

Fleabag wasn't my cup of tea either

LeilaDarling · 22/07/2020 14:25

Gangs of London.
Massively hyped and the most violent thing I have ever seen in my life. Felt physically sick watching it.

randomer · 22/07/2020 16:57

Whats the premise behind Tiger King....anything to do with hurting wild animals turns my stomach.

Dahlietta · 22/07/2020 18:15

@whatshebininagain That was my exact Fleabag experience. I was looking for something to watch and thought I had give it a go as everyone was raving about it. I was HORRIFIED Grin.
I really dislike Sherlock.

TheClitterati · 22/07/2020 18:46

Gilmore Girls - incredibly dull and not funny.

House - started watching it just recently. It's A bit shit innit. Or does it improve?

TheClitterati · 22/07/2020 18:48

Doggybiccies there are 3 seasons of This Is Us on prime.

whattimeisitrightnow · 22/07/2020 19:22

Oh yes, OITNB! Got partway through the second episode and realised I wasn’t enjoying it. Just not my cup of tea.

Someone said The Simpsons Shock heresy! Did you watch the first 8-10 seasons? Those are great television. I agree that anything in recent years has been crap and they need to stop making it.

OP posts:
whattimeisitrightnow · 22/07/2020 19:25

I enjoy This Is Us quite a bit, but am under no illusions that it’s anything other than a well-acted soap opera.

Gilmore Girls is interesting: I watched the whole thing a couple of years ago. It’s a good example of ‘overrated’: not bad (at least to me), perfectly adequate entertainment, but not quite good enough to have the cult following it did/does. The show would’ve been ten times better if it was Lorelai and Paris as her daughter, or Rory was more Paris-like. I adored Paris. Rory was meh.
