Post lockdown hair cut disaster

Has anyone else had one?
I have been going to the same hairdresser for years. I never need a restyle as she just trims and reshapes each time -it’s always been lovely!
I haven’t been since the end of Feb as my next appointment (1st week of lockdown) was cancelled.
The style had grown out and I needed a good couple of inches taken off. We discussed the cut and she said that she’d been doing it so long she knew what I liked.

I think my hairdresser has forgotten how to cut hair.

I have uneven layers that look like long and short clumps and the ‘style’ is not only completely different to my usual cut but would also be unflattering on anyone.

AIBU to be really annoyed? So much hair has been taken off and all I can do is grow it out. Has everyone else had beautiful cuts? Tell me I’m not alone.

Funny you should say this op. My cousin rang me this week to say she had had her first hair cut in five months by her longstanding hairdresser. She said he went to answer the phone, came back and cut a chunk off the side he had already cut resulting in it having to be loads shorter to compensate. He also spent his time discussing his haemorrhoids.

My hairdresser has been doing my hair for ages also. She hates the visor she had to wear and it made her panic. I did wonder why she did not try it out before taking clients back though. I was really disappointed with my cut and the fact she refuses to blow dry now. Basically I got a disappointing wet cut whilst listening to her unhappiness.

I am absolutely sure that a great many people have been thrilled with their haircuts and I know a local salon has gone to loads of trouble and expense to welcome back clients. I am starting to realise that I want to be pampered a little bit at the hairdressers and I think me and lovely cousin need to have a bit of a rethink.

I hope it is just the three of us and the vast majority are happy.

I've just come back from my post lockdown hair do and am very pleased. I told him I liked the extra length and he agreed and cut accordingly. Sorry you've had a disaster and anyone else too.

recklessruby · 18/07/2020 15:52

Not me as my hair is shoulder length and i m too much of a coward to go too often but my friend had her already short hair re cut in an unflattering wedge (she has very thick curly hair) and hated it so much she shaved the lot off.
After some tears and frantic buying of hats its growing back but she suits it super short, is rocking her new look and people have said it really suits her.

Toothsil · 18/07/2020 15:52

I'm glad I've not been able to get an appointment until the end of August so mine has plenty time to get back into practice!

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 15:55

I’m sorry to hear this but glad in a way it’s not just me. I also have a chunk cut out the front.
I’ve just been upstairs to straighten it again... the’layers’ she decided to do are so random.

Because the ‘layers‘ (whatever they are meant to be) are so odd, no amount of straightening helps... My hair is usually really easy to style! It’s really awful !

ilovesooty · 18/07/2020 15:57

Did you pay for the cut and leave the salon without raising any concerns?

Plurr · 18/07/2020 15:57

Had mine cut and coloured this week by the hairdresser I have used for years and was very pleased. They are working shorter shifts with half the normal clients and allowing a minimum of one hour for appointments. The prices have gone up (understandably) but the staff are happy with the arrangements which I think is key. Sorry to hear your cut was not a success, it must be very disappointing.

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 15:57

seren I’m glad you love your hair! 😊
I should have asked for a trim too!

Mnhealth202020 · 18/07/2020 16:00

How awful. Imagine being excited to finally get your hair done, just for it to look shit!

Can you post a pic?

You should let your stylist know, any good hair dresser would rectify it free of charge

Potionqueen · 18/07/2020 16:00

I’m having mine done on Monday. Having 2nd thoughts now.

Mnhealth202020 · 18/07/2020 16:01

To be honest my hair looks SO bad now that even if do they mess it up, it would still be an improvement🤦🏼‍♀️

LindainLockdown · 18/07/2020 16:03

I had my hair cut yesterday, was so looking forward to it as my hair really needs regular trims to keep it manageable, it grows outwards as much out as downwards. Anyway it is barely better than it was before I went, parts very poorly cut, especially around face, where mask was impeding. It is very disappointing, I was really looking forward to it but I appreciate the limitations of the current situation and hope it is better next time. Still wfh and hardly going out anywhere so not the end of the world.

NameChange84 · 18/07/2020 16:04

My Mum’s first haircut post lockdown is far too short with awful non sensical short layers (that she was happy to have grown out). It’s like a shorter version of the Queen’s hair! It was shoulder length and layered and now she can’t even get a brush round it. It wasn’t what she asked for.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 18/07/2020 16:07

That sounds beyond annoying. Re other people listening to tales of woe at the same time. I stopped having a mobile hairdresser, who was much cheaper, cos I don't want wet towels, hoovering etc, and I too want to be pampered. I don't want to listen to someone's ishoos for the best part of two hours. I'll ask how she is and get a couple of sentences. That's fine. Any more and it's not a treat. I stopped going to an alternative health practitioner because it felt like I was counselling her horrible relationship issues every time. Not what I pay for, and good hairdressers and beauticians know this.

CastleCrasher · 18/07/2020 16:08

Funny I had mine done this week and while it's ok, it's nowhere near her usual standard and when I got home I found lots of random bits that were too long and needed trimmed - there was a bit at the front was easily three inches longer than the rest, and several at the sides too. Didn't realise at the salon and it won't put me off going back, but was surprised

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 16:11

ilovesooty
I didn’t suspect anything too drastic (I knew it didn’t look great but thought I could maybe restyle it when I got home.) I saw the chunks/uneven layers as soon as I got home and had a good look/brushed it through.

A few things I found strange... She blow dried it in a different way, applied liberal use of hair product and did that thing previous hairdressers have done when they know it looks a bit crap - over confident ‘whooshing’ whilst telling me how fab it is.

That was all a bit odd but I just thought ‘strange times, everything is a bit different’.
She doesn’t usually apply a load of crap after blow drying and is also usually just very calm and friendly. No ‘whooshing’.

TBH, unless I go really short, there is not much I can do to hide the chunks.

I think she knew she had f’ked my hair up.

2bazookas · 18/07/2020 16:12

Since lockdown I've been cutting my own hair with scissors and I reckon with a bit more practise I'll be happy to pay myself 30 quid every time.

Anyway, what are hairdressers going to talk about now nobody 's going on holiday?

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 16:13

I can’t post a pic because it definitely out me 😂

I wonder if PPE is interferring with dexterity.
I once worked in a certain acessories store and while doing ear piercings, felt very clumsy with the gloves on and often headbutted the double glazed windows because I would see the external pane and misjudge the internal pane Blush

Mnhealth202020 · 18/07/2020 16:14

This is why I didn’t want to be the first client in my salon once they reopened. I felt that they may need to get their groove back after months without practice? Especially with all the COVID adjustments

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 16:17

To be honest my hair looks SO bad now that even if do they mess it up, it would still be an improvement🤦🏼‍♀️

I thought this! It had grown so long!
I could tie it up/ put waves in it though.
Can’t even make it look presentable at the moment!!!
You’re right, it was disappointing- I was really looking forward to it!
The thing this Covid business has taught me though is don’t sweat the small stuff so whilst I am getting it off my chest here, on MN... IRL, I’m a bit ‘Oh well..’

Interesting thread - I love my hairdresser, he's fab and I was so excited to get my hair cut. It definitely wasn't as good as usual. They aren't doing blow dries at the moment, so it just sort of dried and I thought 'oh'! Not terrible by any means and I was so grateful to get neatened up, but it was just adequate as opposed to the usual fabulous.

KisstheTeapot14 · 18/07/2020 16:19

@2bazookas I hear you.

Hairrdressers have always messed up cutting my curly hair. Had one in Feb and it was a distaster - 2 inches of very short at the back I asked for but she started with clippers at the very top of the back on head! Too late to cry out - it was done. Could have cried. Not had to have anything during lockdown as its been growing back. Got my own clippers and am training DH.

He has done DS's hair and his own and its not bad. He's not getting £30 though Grin

MayFayre · 18/07/2020 16:20

Mine definitely wasn’t up to the usual standard. I felt like the stylist was stressing about hygiene and procedures and her mind was on that rather than the cut. I’m sure she’ll settle back down into things after a few weeks.
