Post lockdown hair cut disaster

Has anyone else had one?
I have been going to the same hairdresser for years. I never need a restyle as she just trims and reshapes each time -it’s always been lovely!
I haven’t been since the end of Feb as my next appointment (1st week of lockdown) was cancelled.
The style had grown out and I needed a good couple of inches taken off. We discussed the cut and she said that she’d been doing it so long she knew what I liked.

I think my hairdresser has forgotten how to cut hair.

I have uneven layers that look like long and short clumps and the ‘style’ is not only completely different to my usual cut but would also be unflattering on anyone.

AIBU to be really annoyed? So much hair has been taken off and all I can do is grow it out. Has everyone else had beautiful cuts? Tell me I’m not alone.

I wonder if PPE is interferring with dexterity.

No gloves 🧤 so not that in this case!

Seems logical that they would be rusty. My driving has gone to pot did 4 miles in April, 7 in May, has taken me a bit to get into the groove and not be so hesitant at junctions. I thought I would wait until things settle a bit before venturing back to my hairdresser. My fringe grew out and everyone says it looks better that way.

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 16:24

Castle
I’m sorry to hear that! It’s disappointing isn’t it?
I hope you are a bit happier with it! You’ve inspired me to snip at mine a bit...

I've just had my haircut this week and am semi-unhappy with it!! It's only got a few small sections longer than the rest though, not horrifically mangled, so is manageable!

I went to my usual salon but had a different woman as my stylist was on mat leave.
It's not terrible but it's not brilliant either! I won't be going again until my regular girl is back.

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 16:29

justasking
You and everyone on the road it seems! Including me!
The thing is, I am aware that I’m rusty so cautious. My usually brilliant, calm hairdresser was quite over confident and scissor happy! 😂😂😂😂

Glad I found this thread. I had my hair cut a lot shorter in Feb and was glad I had when lockdown started. I thought it was cut really well as it only started to look out of shape in June. Went back in July not long after they opened and came out with some kind of bob which I definitely didn't ask for! I found it really hard to see what was going on with a mask on so had a better look once home and phoned to complain. Went back to get it cut again and it looks bloody awful. Long floppy fringe and short but scraggy sides. I loathe it. Just going to let it grow out again and maybe go elsewhere. It is odd that so many of us have had the same bad experience. I went past at least 3 hairdressers today where customers weren't wearing masks. I just don't think they can cut hair properly when you're wearing one.

cato75 · 18/07/2020 16:31

I'm disappointed too. Cut too short and too dark. Hairdresser's glasses kept steaming up due to corona mask so that might have had something to do with it.

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 16:32

Anjelika I wore a blue disposable and she was wearing the same but I can see that face guards would be a real problem.

justasking111 · 18/07/2020 16:32

Oh had to wear a mask at barbers, but he had to keep taking it off on one side or the other to do the fiddly bits around his ears. He thought it funny.

RedRec · 18/07/2020 16:36

I had a bad haircut on Tuesday but it was my fault, not the hairdresser's. After five months I was too scared to go as short as I really wanted to so went for a boring, safe trim and I hate it.
Made an appointment today to go to a different salon next week and have it done 'properly' and absolutely cannot wait!

Mooserp · 18/07/2020 16:37

I had mine cut last week, I have a blunt bob which needed a couple of inches off. It looked fine when I left but when I washed and dried it myself I found lots of bits that had been missed and one side was longer than the other.

I contacted them and went back to have it fixed. I would have appreciated getting something for the inconvenience, like money off my next visit. But they didn't offer anything. I've been going there for a while but it's put me off.

opinionatedfreak · 18/07/2020 16:37

Mine is great - usual sharp bob.

Lockdown proved to be a significant prod to moving towards a more natural hair colour so it was all a bit of a win here.

Sorry.

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 16:37

Just asked DDs what they think... They looked at each other and said ‘We didn’t want to say anything Mum but it’s not great...’ 😂 Aw! We were laughing!!
One said ‘ What’s worse than lockdown hair? Post lockdown haircut’ 😂 oh dear...
You lot have cheered me up though!

How disappointing OP

My hair needs a trim, but I won’t get a cut unless I can go somewhere without mask and they can dry my hair too

That may be years... never

May just plait my hair and stick it in a bun from now

YouStupidBoy · 18/07/2020 16:38

Same with the mask when I had my haircut justasking111 - had to take off one side then the other and then remove it entirely to have the hair length around my face judged so the hairdresser could get it right - and then a final removal to see if I liked the overall cut or if I wanted any adjustments. He said it was much harder to judge with a mask on and I can see why as it totally changes the shape and proportions of your face.

GiraffeWithSwag · 18/07/2020 16:41

Mine was cut last Friday and it’s taken a week for it to ‘soften’ at the edges...also long-standing hairdresser (over 20 yrs) so he knows my hair. But disappointed overall but it’ll grow and it did need a good cut i suppose 🥴

pigsDOfly · 18/07/2020 16:42

So sorry to hear about all the disastrous hair cuts.

It's quite interesting because I've been following another thread and am amazed at the amount of posters who cut their own hair, many of them starting DIY hair care because they got fed up with bad hair cuts from hairdressers.

I've been cutting my own hair for years because I've always been disappointed with every cut I used to get.

I've let my short hair grow over lockdown and I'm really happy with how it looks now, and how long it keeps its shape after washing.

I had to trim my fringe this morning as it was getting way too long and annoying me, and it actually looks really good now.

I was holding on, not cutting my fringe, as I was thinking that as it's longer now I'd get a professional cut and sort of 'start again'.

Not sure I will after reading this thread.

Picklypickles · 18/07/2020 16:42

I haven't braved the hairdressers yet, I'm waiting for the mad rush to die down! I have thick curly hair and was never particularly regular with the haircuts anyway so I'm happy to wait for quite some time until some kind of normality resumes, I can cope with wild and bushy but not the thought of a bad haircut where too much comes off!

comingintomyown · 18/07/2020 16:46

Oh no this thread is making me fearful of Wednesday,I have thick curly hair and am enjoying it a bit longer. Perhaps I should just get rid of the badger and wait for a trim !

WotsitWiggle · 18/07/2020 16:49

I'm disappointed with mine too. It needed a cut even before lockdown, so in April I cut the very dry, straggley ends off my long curly hair. Easy enough, looked a bit better. By June, I could feel the ends were really dry, so I cut another inch - this was quite thick hair but made a big difference to how it felt and it was less frizzy. It needed shaping, but the length was perfect.

I went to the hairdresser last week. Nothing off the length please, but it needs shaping round the front because that's grown out. Watch out, the curl really bounces up - and I'd washed it that morning so it was peak curliness to demonstrate.

I've come out with it a good 1.5 " shorter and no shaping. Making it a bit wild and I'm having to clip the front off my face. It'll take about 4 months to grow out to my preferred length again. It was like she just didn't hear me at all.

DC3dilemma · 18/07/2020 16:50

I’ve been cutting my own hair through lockdown. I have long hair, but being over 40, if I don’t get the ends trimmed regularly my hair gets dry bushy and hard to style.

I found a selection of these videos really helpful -start with the ponytail unicorn cut, then sharpen up the ends in bunches, then a fringe trim. I have hairdressers scissors, which seem to make a difference to the end result. I don’t think I’ll be back at the hairdressers much now. Disappointing haircuts are just too common.

catsrus · 18/07/2020 16:52

I'm in a different position - had a go at mine (short anyway) with the dog clippers, made one bad swipe (oops) but it'll grow back, DD did the back for me.

Every time it was annoying me I had another go with the clippers and got a bit bolder - I haven't managed to thin it properly, but I totally love the short length - most hairdressers want me to keep it looking a "bit more feminine" Biscuit. Just as I get one to be brave they leave and I have to retrain another - so I'm very tempted not to bother going back to a hairdresser ......

Babyroobs · 18/07/2020 16:53

My hairdresser re-opened today and I was the first in. Generally happy with the cut and colour but not really happy with lack of social distancing and too many customers in the salon.

comingintomyown · 18/07/2020 16:53

Omg that’s exactly what’s worrying me wotsit

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 18/07/2020 16:54

This is an interesting thread!

Can I ask - Are many hairdressers not offering blow dries?! I've always thought wet cuts were quite outdated because you need to be able to see the shape of the cut AFTER the hair has been dried!

I have also wondered if PPE has a direct effect on the quality. Sorry some of you have had bad experiences. Have a Wine on me!
