Post lockdown hair cut disaster

Has anyone else had one?
I have been going to the same hairdresser for years. I never need a restyle as she just trims and reshapes each time -it’s always been lovely!
I haven’t been since the end of Feb as my next appointment (1st week of lockdown) was cancelled.
The style had grown out and I needed a good couple of inches taken off. We discussed the cut and she said that she’d been doing it so long she knew what I liked.

I think my hairdresser has forgotten how to cut hair.

I have uneven layers that look like long and short clumps and the ‘style’ is not only completely different to my usual cut but would also be unflattering on anyone.

AIBU to be really annoyed? So much hair has been taken off and all I can do is grow it out. Has everyone else had beautiful cuts? Tell me I’m not alone.

My dad always says the difference between a good haircut and a bad one is a week.
I have to admit though with my long hair and my hairdressers bad eye sight normally, I'm nervous about letting her loose on mine with a visor on in a couple of weeks in case I end up with a mohikan.
Not sure how she would feel about me giving up my appointment for someone more urgent or are they struggling to get their customers back into the salon again?

winterinmadeira · 18/07/2020 17:39

Mine was not bad but not great. I have grown fond of my now long hair after not having it cut for 5 months. I asked for half an inch off and my hairdresser was so busy talking / interrogating me that she took 3 inches off it! I was like ffs... at least I know I can go several months now for it to grow back.

Drogonssmile · 18/07/2020 17:39

Over lockdown I've learnt to cut my own hair, it's long anyway and I can quite easily cut my fringe now so I'm not going back to the hairdresser. Found esalon did a brilliant job of matching my colour too to cover the greys so...... much cheaper!

dottiedodah · 18/07/2020 17:59

2 bazookas .Have been cutting my own hair for years now! Hated going to the H/D as a child and it has never left me! Lots of cutting tutorials online ,and use a good well known brand of colour every few months! There was a similar thread on here yesterday as well !

Tomorrowisanewday · 18/07/2020 18:04

I had the same. Been saying the same hairdresser for 20 years - I now have what looks like two haircuts, one for the top, and one for the bottom Angry

Tomorrowisanewday · 18/07/2020 18:06

I hadnt had it cut since the end of January (had an appointment the week lockdown started), and I was getting quite found of it longer Sad

Myshinynewname · 18/07/2020 18:12

I've not braved going back yet as covid infection rates are still high in our area and I'm in a vulnerable group. This thread is making me wonder whether it's worth going back at all! I have long hair so it's not obviously out of shape but I have highlights. Is there anyway of colouring it at home that won't have an obvious stripe where my highlights have grown out?

SheSaidNoFuckThat · 18/07/2020 18:15

I had mine done just over a week ago, she went to town with thinning scissors all over my head, it's bloody awful and not what I asked for at all, I won't be going back again. On the plus side it's long enough to tie up and I won't need it cut again in a hurry

MillyMollyMardy · 18/07/2020 18:15

I reading these thinking we've got away lightly. Saw my usual hairdresser earlier this week and it looks brilliant but they are blow-drying so that probably helps.
Ds and DH have just got back from their usual stylist and look fine. They said he was unhappy with his vision in his visor.

I once had the most disastrous cut from someone who’d done it fine before - he must have been a million miles away away with the fairies. The front was OK - the back was appalling, like a short back and sides - I don’t know what on earth he was thinking of. I left the salon absolutely in tears (they did say I didn’t have to pay) and straightaway phoned a dd at uni 150 miles away for a very tearful moan.

She later phoned the salon and gave the bloke a bollocking!

However only a day or two later a close uni friend of hers was killed in a road accident. He’d stayed with us, too.
Talk about putting things into perspective - I felt so bad for being in such a state about my hair, which would soon grow again.

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 18:42

I’m not sure I’d be able to get in even if I wanted to go back and let her have another go! They are doing reduced hours and fewer clients so is likely to be booked up.

Lol at what your d daughters said! Brilliant

reallifegetsintheway2 · 18/07/2020 19:38

OP that is very bad! You need to go back - it might need to be blunt cut to the shortest layer to fix it though !

WhattheHhashappened · 18/07/2020 19:56

I’ve been snipping away at the worst bits all afternoon!

I agree. The more I look at it the more I wonder what it is meant to be!
I’m going to leave it for a few days though! I don’t have to go out anywhere thankfully! Not ready to visit another hairdresser just yet!

OMG @WhattheHhashappened what did they do to your hair??!! As if you paid for that as well🤦🏼‍♀️

bigchris · 18/07/2020 20:38

Oh i was lucky then, went in, asked if he wanted me to wear a mask, he said no , he asked if I wanted him to wear a visor, I said no

And he blow dried

Nothing different at all, was great!

bythehairsonmychinichinchin · 18/07/2020 20:41

Perhaps they have forgotten how to cut hair, and hold a conversation. I know that I forget my password after a break from work and forget things 🤷‍♀️

Mnhealth202020 · 18/07/2020 20:48

Yep, looks like OP’s stylist either forgot how to cut hair, or has never cut hair before! I reckon I could have done a better job!

Regarding PPE - Not going to lie, I’ve been stalking my salon on Instagram during the build up to my appointment. I have noticed that they seem to ask clients to keep masks on during the actual service, but get clients to take their masks off for the “after photo”? If they ask me to take my mask off to get a more instagramable photo I’m going to refuse!

amusedbush · 18/07/2020 20:57

That sick feeling after a bad haircut is awful. Until I found my current hairdresser I never went back to anyone more than twice due to them going rogue.

I had mine trimmed this afternoon and thankfully it looks as good as normal. Though between my mask, his visor and the noise from the hairdryer we couldn’t enjoy our usual gossip Grin

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 18/07/2020 21:14

I’m going next Saturday - hairdressers just opened here on Wednesday and I hope any “rustiness” is gone by then.

OP, you must get in touch and ask them to sort it. If it was me I would ask for the salon director or whatever to do it.

TheGrump · 18/07/2020 21:19

You are not alone! I had my hair cut this week and emerged in circa 1995 with a Rachel from Friends cut. I have been going to my hairdresser for about 4 years and she has been faultless till now? Always spot on. I did not ask for this many layers..... Family members gasped when I came home....

What is going on? Is the visor disorting their vision in a sort of fairground funhouse of mirrors kind of way?

Best dig out some 90s fashion to complete the look....

Funny you should say this thegrump
The very few very soft, gentle, natural, blended layers I usually have at the ends of my hair have now become choppy steps that go quite high up my head!
She talked a lot about ‘volume’ whilst blow drying.
I wonder if lockdown has had a time travel effect ? 😅 The ‘Rachel’...

I went on the 1st day open.
I spent £60 andmy cut and colour no different to how I've been doing it myself - for free.
2 hours in a face mask with glasses removed, blind as a bat, no fun.
Sorry, but I won't be returning.
