Post lockdown hair cut disaster

Has anyone else had one?
I have been going to the same hairdresser for years. I never need a restyle as she just trims and reshapes each time -it’s always been lovely!
I haven’t been since the end of Feb as my next appointment (1st week of lockdown) was cancelled.
The style had grown out and I needed a good couple of inches taken off. We discussed the cut and she said that she’d been doing it so long she knew what I liked.

I think my hairdresser has forgotten how to cut hair.

I have uneven layers that look like long and short clumps and the ‘style’ is not only completely different to my usual cut but would also be unflattering on anyone.

AIBU to be really annoyed? So much hair has been taken off and all I can do is grow it out. Has everyone else had beautiful cuts? Tell me I’m not alone.

I wonder if they're rushing the cuts though? Every hairdresser I've seen on TV has said about huge backlogs and trying to fit as many customers in as possible. Looks like in some cases that's at the detriment of decent cuts.

No, they are actually spacing appointments out and each one is given a longer slot.

Just had mine done four inches off feels and looks amazing. Though it never stays that way.
Bad hair is miserable

JonHammIsMyJamm · 19/07/2020 11:56

Mine definitely didn’t rush the cut or colour. I was given a longer than usual slot.

vikingwife · 19/07/2020 11:56

I have gone the other way - went into a depression & shaved my head in lockdown & learnt how to bleach it via YouTube tutorials.

It’s liberating, highly recommend. It actually makes me feel more feminine weirdly. having a bad hair day / haircut really sucks and makes my mind feel messy...

JonHammIsMyJamm · 19/07/2020 12:01

My hairdresser isn’t young, she’s been cutting hair for 30yrs. It’s definitely not a 90’s lockdown time warp for her, I think it’s just a combination of 3 months off deskilling a bit and the PPE affecting depth perception & dexterity.

I’ve only come out with a slightly less good version of what I usually get from her though, not a radically different style which is what others seem to have got Sad

ScottishStottie · 19/07/2020 12:05

This post is giving me ths fear... Currently sitting in the hairdressers seat for my first cut and colour after lockdown...!

back2good · 19/07/2020 12:19

Take some more pictures, send them to your hairdresser with a note telling her you're deeply unhappy with the cut. See what she says.

WhattheHhashappened · 19/07/2020 13:48

Scottish
Good or bad? I hope it went well!

bekindtoyou · 19/07/2020 13:57

They can't see out of the visors very well ... that's the problem.

bekindtoyou · 19/07/2020 13:58

Having said that, I am happy with my cut and colour. I have a slightly shorter fringe than usual but I like it.

Tyranttoddler · 19/07/2020 14:00

Mine is awful. I was so excited. I look ridiculous Sad

Shellingbynight · 19/07/2020 14:01

Sorry to hear about your experience OP, how disappointing.

I had a haircut with my usual stylist last week and it was fine, just as good as usual. She was wearing a visor but it didn't seem to affect her adversely. She was very chatty and cheerful, glad to be back at work.

She also said they are allowing longer slots so there is no customer overlap. I've booked another appointment in 6 weeks.

StopChelping · 19/07/2020 14:03

I have an appointment in two weeks, I am hopeful she will cut my hair well but in all honesty it can’t look much worse than it does already. It’s grown so much, it looks like a bad wig.

I’ve had short hair for a few years now and post menopause it seems to have changed texture, it looks straggly and greasy.

LEELULUMPKIN · 19/07/2020 15:47

I must admit that I am worrying about this too! I haven't been for 8 months as I was due to have it done 2 days after lockdown kicked in so it has really grown.

Like the OP said, at least it being this long there are things you can do with it whereas if it is cut much shorter I can see my getting irritated by having a bob and constantly having to tuck it behind my ears.

The earliest appointment I could get when they re-opened was for this Wednesday so we shall see what happens! :)

@WhattheHhashappened

Scottish Good or bad? I hope it went well!
Good! Not quite the colour i was looking for but he explained why (original old colour etc etc) but overall very good experience!
Pleasebeaflesbite · 19/07/2020 18:47

OP I’m sorry but I’ve just LOLd at your haircut. Sorry - I’m glad you can see the funny side FlowersFlowers

My DD has also had a bad post lockdown haircut experience. Luckily it’s long so can be tied up.

Pity me I’m in next week for my dermatologist’s first day back botox. I’m no longer looking forward to it Grin

Pleasebeaflesbite · 19/07/2020 18:53

Is the visor disorting their vision in a sort of fairground funhouse of mirrors kind of way?

Aridane · 19/07/2020 19:31

@bigchris - Sounds like you’ve were unlucky going to ac salon taking not even the most basic (and recommended) of precautions

WhattheHhashappened · 19/07/2020 19:34

Pleasebeaflesbite
Oh my God... Good luck with that!! Grin

I was a bit stressed after seeing this thread yesterday. I had my first appointment this morning for a cut and colour. It’s been six months as I was due to go first week of Lockdown. I should have had more faith. My poor hairdresser had to wear an apron , gloves and a huge visor. She did every bit as good a job as normal. No idea how ! She took her gloves off for the cut which might make a difference . The price has gone up by 10% to cover the extra time between clients, the masks that she gives to clients and the extra equipment she has had to buy not to mention not working for 3months! I love her and feel like a new woman!

WhattheHhashappened · 20/07/2020 18:44

makingmyway
I’m really pleased for you! She sounds good!
My own hair has settled down (after both me and my DDs have snipped at it).
It looks a bit rubbish still but I can style it a bit better!

OP posts:
U2HasTheEdge · 20/07/2020 19:32

I thought my new cut was lovely but then I noticed that my undercut, where my mask strap was is now sporting a bald spot! My fringe is very different too. It is thin and choppy, I always have mine thick and straight. It is uneven, but DH says it looks like it is meant to look like that Hmm

It still looks a lot better than it did during lockdown. My fringe will grow within 2 weeks and the bald patch is only noticeable if I have my hair up high.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/07/2020 17:30

Mine is an awful lot better than it was! I did snip a few bits afterwards when I realised that some bits were still poking me in the eye and it's not really my usual style, somehow I look all neat and tidy - a feat I thought impossible to achieve.

My poor hairdresser though, she looked stifled in a mask and shield and I was so grateful that I gave her a tip that compensated for the appointments that didn't happen.

I am vaguely musing the idea of clipping it all off, it would be so much less hassle!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/07/2020 17:31

In the meantime, I walked past barbers where no one at all was wearing any ppe Hmm
