To ask how much your household spends on alcohol

DH and I are arguing about how much is reasonable to spend on booze each month.

He drinks, I don't. So to help me work out if I'm being unreasonable I'm asking how much you spend (and for how many drinkers) so I can understand what's reasonable.

Also he smokes, vapes and smokes weed and those all add up as well. I just see it all as a huge waste of money.

Why does he smoke AND vape?

LimeLemonOrange · 17/07/2020 20:10

Damn looks like I've accidentally created two identical threads. Please ignore this one!

Wish MN didn't say 'we couldn't post your thread try again' when it obviously did work!

Gah cross posted!

He smokes and vapes because he started vaping to give up smoking, managed for a while, then went back to it and didn't stop the vaping.

A bottle of wine a week - about £8? If I'm going out its normally dinner and drinks (not that I've been out in a whilst) it would be about £80 but that's every 2 months

Merryoldgoat · 17/07/2020 20:17

The other thread isn’t working so I’ll comment here.

I think I drink about a litre of gin in around 2 months, occasional bottle of wine so, £30 ish a month for me and DH in total which is a generous estimate. Probably much less usually.

Merryoldgoat · 17/07/2020 20:18

But I used to drink around 5-8 bottles of wine a week pre-kids so... 🤷🏾‍♀️

JaceLancs · 17/07/2020 20:19

£50-£60 a month here but we don’t go out drinking or have takeaways just occasional meals out

maildaily · 17/07/2020 20:19

Probably around a tenner on a couple of bottles of wine for cooking

Madein1995 · 17/07/2020 20:19

Hmm tbh I'd see the weed as a concern primarily for MH reasons

I personally spend around 14-21 quid a week on alcohol. I like my prosecco, usually a glass am evening sometimes more. Tesco currently have prosecco with 3 quid off until monday so I'm going tomorrow to buy a few more bottles. I'm quite good at moderating during the week though

Bloke23 · 17/07/2020 20:22

We spend £0, we would rather go out and have a few drinks, although I wouldnt mind a few, but i drive and my wife doesnt, and i would be worried if something happend to our child i wouldnt be able to drive them to the hospital

isabellerossignol · 17/07/2020 20:22

Two adults, a couple of bottles of wine a week. It probably works out at around £100 a month on alcohol, which is a lot. But we are fortunate to be able to afford it so it's not a problem. If we couldn't afford it, we would cut down or cut it out. For context, neither of us smoke and we don't go out much or have expensive hobbies.

Tinyhumansurvivalist · 17/07/2020 20:24

Neither of us drinks particularly just the odd bottle of fruit coder (which I never finish) so about £10/month and that isn't every month.

FizzyPink · 17/07/2020 20:25

I usually buy a bottle of prosecco a week for DP and I to have on a Friday night plus a bottle of rose if we have friends coming over at the weekend. So maybe £15 a week.
We recently invested in a cocktail trolley so have been spending a bit more buying nice looking spirits for it. Neither of us drink gin but the bottle of raspberry, meringue and vanilla gin looks very pretty Grin

FizzyPink · 17/07/2020 20:28

Oh did you mean in total rather than just in the food shopping? If so, pre-lockdown we were out most weekends having dinner and drinks so I’d say maybe an extra £40 plus anything else I spent having mid-week dinners with friends.
However, we both have very high paying jobs so can easily afford it. It’s very different if your husband is blowing money like that if you’re struggling.

Tunnocks34 · 17/07/2020 20:29

At most £30 every couple of weeks, but that’s because I like a particular bottle of wine that cost £24.

My husband drinks four cans of ale over a weekend if he’s going to drink.

We don’t drink every weekend and we’re actually considering going teetotal as I feel sluggish even after one glass.

LimeLemonOrange · 17/07/2020 20:30

Yes total spend.

We can afford it, I just think it seems a lot to spend for one person.

His brother's an alcoholic and his family are very boozy so I also worry about the health side.

BikeRunSki · 17/07/2020 20:30

£20-30 a month max between 2.

Heismyopendoor · 17/07/2020 20:32

£0.

We don’t drink alcohol or smoke (or vape).

JagerPlease · 17/07/2020 20:34

At the moment, probably £100-150 per month. I get a regular wine delivery and then have been stocking up on various spirits.

I think it does really depend what you drink though. If I replaced all my alcohol intake with beer or cider, I'd probably spend nearer £30-40

morefun · 17/07/2020 20:34

Hmm 🤔 it's just me and the kids and I normally buy 2-3 bottles of wine a week they're each less than a tenner. During lockdown it's been more though, a couple of extra bottles a week

Belindabelle · 17/07/2020 20:35

I drink mainly white wine and DH drinks red. We go through 2 bottles each per week on average. Say £8 per bottle £32 per week. Might have the occasional gin or rum so say £40 per week, £160 per month. BUT I just go off it sometimes and don’t drink for weeks on end.

Nat6999 · 17/07/2020 20:37

I spend zero on alcohol, I'm a single parent & haven't had a drink for over 3 years, I do vape but £100 worth of vape juice lasts me over 3 months.

AnnaMolly06 · 17/07/2020 20:38

About £15 a week. Crate of lager and a bottle of rum between me and dp. Both last just over fortnight though

TwistedSisters · 17/07/2020 20:39

Around £150-200 a month at the moment....it was less pre lockdown. I drink wine and the occasional cocktails and DH drinks cognac or malt which is obviously quite a bit more expensive than drinking cider or beer.
