To ask how much your household spends on alcohol

DH and I are arguing about how much is reasonable to spend on booze each month.

He drinks, I don't. So to help me work out if I'm being unreasonable I'm asking how much you spend (and for how many drinkers) so I can understand what's reasonable.

Also he smokes, vapes and smokes weed and those all add up as well. I just see it all as a huge waste of money.

Probably about £20 a month averagely. DH doesn't drink at home and I maybe have a bottle of Prosecco every other week.

Isitbedtimeyet4 · 18/07/2020 12:59

I also don’t drink and my husband does, id say he probably spends £20-30 a month depending on whether he’s had any BBQs with friends or anything! Alcohol really isn’t big in our household, not for any particular reason, we’re just not big drinkers. I think if you enjoy drinking it could add up quickly!

TimeWastingButFun · 18/07/2020 13:20

No smoking here, but we both like wine and my husband likes good brandy. We share a bottle of wine most days and often have a G&T, it's actually a lot when you work it out! Average bottle a day between us around 5 days a week say = roughly £65 x four weeks so £260month. Gosh that's a lot actually, that doesn't count the gin or the brandy or anything we give visitors. We buy a bottle of gin most weeks, at £22 a bottle so I reckon we spend about £350 a month. Eek! Having said that I haven't been drinking wine this last week as I'm wanting to lose a few pounds!

Yoir · 18/07/2020 13:28

I’d say about £50 a week

HisNibs · 18/07/2020 13:29

@AngelicInnocent

I'm amazed at the number of people who seem to spend a small mortgage payment (400 to 600) per month on alcohol.
This

I have a 'small' mortgage. Managed to save over many years and bought our current house with a 40% deposit. Raw payment is £480 a month due to low interest rates but have been overpaying each month to bring the term down (currently reduced due to Covid). The idea of spending as much again per month on alcohol to me is barmy.

WearyandBleary · 18/07/2020 13:32

£300 a month probably, but we love alcohol and pairing with food (which we also spend a lot on).

It’s our favourite thing to do so is our hobby I guess. We try to support local producers and importers.

In normal times we would try do a Michelin-starred place every couple of months: easily £300 or so on a dinner.

Food is our hobby and we plan trips around restaurants - so we are saving a fortune atm...

Whatisthisfuckery · 18/07/2020 13:43

I’m the only adult in the house. I buy a bottle of wine and 4 cans of Aldi or Lidl lager each week, comes to less than £10. I rarely ever go out.

I used to splash out on a bottle of wine from M&S from time to time but I’ve discovered Aldi and Lidl do some pretty good wines for about £6 ish.

Fcukthisshit · 18/07/2020 13:52

About £40 per year for us. Neither of us drink really, but we will get a bottle of baileys and a bottle of rum in for Christmas, and DH will very occasionally have a cider (maybe 2 or 3 times a year) On a Saturday night.

Allthepinkunicorns · 18/07/2020 13:58

Probably about £20 a month sometimes more sometimes less. We had more over lock down as dh was at home more, normally he's away alot and I won't really drink if I'm home on my own.

Ragwort · 18/07/2020 17:10

We have no mortgage (paid off) so happy to spend on alcohol Grin.

Spending habits are so individual though aren't they, I am aghast when I read about how much people spend on haircuts & beauty treatments for example, and I only ever shop for clothes in charity shops, not just because it's cheaper, but I loathe 'fast fashion' and anything to do with the fashion industry. But happy to spend on wine 🍷.

Oly4 · 18/07/2020 17:12

£30-£35 a week for two people

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 18/07/2020 17:12

Nothing ... we might spend £20 a month in a pub

OscarWildesCat · 18/07/2020 17:22

We actually just worked this out the other day and we reckon it’s about £200 😦. DH drinks real ales or single malt and I drink wine or gin. I’m probably drinking a bit too much but 🤷🏼‍♀️. Awaiting the shocked comments of, “oh, that’s way too much etc etc”. I do tend to buy wine around £8-£15 per bottle because I’m a wine snob though.

Baaaahhhhh · 18/07/2020 17:30

Eeeeek, we seem to be at the top end of this thread too. Quite a lot Blush. Several bottles of wine a week, and a bottle of gin, plus other random stuff like Pimms, but that lasts a lot longer. DH drinks the wine and gin, I drink gin, DD1 drinks both, but only DH drinks alcohol every day. DD2 under age.

ArnoJambonsBike · 18/07/2020 17:32

£0. We haven't spent a penny on alcohol in over year. I haven't touched a drop in almost five years and DP in well over a year. The bottles we had left were redistributed amongst the family a few weeks back.

vanillandhoney · 18/07/2020 17:33

DH spends about £8 a week on cider. I don't really drink. So about £25-30 a month.

user1497207191 · 18/07/2020 17:37

A big fat zero here too! OH has never drunk alcohol and I gave it up a few years ago (never a big drinker anyway them, maybe a tenner a month). 18 year old DS doesn't like alcohol either.

Username7521 · 18/07/2020 17:47

Booze like £100 a week I’d say.
But we drink expensive wine generally at least £12 a bottle (last night was an almost £20 bottle) and champagne.
We were more frugal before lockdown, but we sat down and had a chat at the start of lockdown regarding outgoings and we decided life is too short for shit wine. Plus we usually spend quite a bit at nice restaurants fortnightly (around £250) as we appreciate good food and wine.

Username7521 · 18/07/2020 17:49

Smoke wise, I don’t know. Maybe £150 every two months?

Saladd0dger · 18/07/2020 17:58

DH has a £10 pack of cider. I have a £9 pack of fosters. Drink every other weekend. Sometimes I’ll get a couple of wkd as well if I fancy something sweet. It tasted disgusting this weekend so I’ll probably stop the wkd now

Hangingover · 18/07/2020 18:14

£0 - v.good as am alcoholic Smile

LimedTimbers · 18/07/2020 18:36

Zero at the moment, but Pre COVID easily £25 a week

WineAndTiramisu · 18/07/2020 18:42

I get a case of wine about every 2 months, so £60/month, my partner drinks less, but beer, so about £30/month I would think.
Probably a bit more during lockdown Grin

cjpark · 18/07/2020 18:50

We may have a drink of champagne at Christmas or Birthdays, otherwise we don't drink, so pretty much zero!

Feellikedancingyeah · 18/07/2020 20:12

£0
