To ask how much your household spends on alcohol

DH and I are arguing about how much is reasonable to spend on booze each month.

He drinks, I don't. So to help me work out if I'm being unreasonable I'm asking how much you spend (and for how many drinkers) so I can understand what's reasonable.

Also he smokes, vapes and smokes weed and those all add up as well. I just see it all as a huge waste of money.

I buy a box of wine every month so about £15. DH is teetotal.

Darkestseasonofall · 17/07/2020 20:39

Seems like you're getting the shitty end of the stick, do you have treats too?

Belindabelle · 17/07/2020 20:41

So how much do you spend?

Elbels · 17/07/2020 20:44

£100 a month roughly for the two of us.

Mrsdoubtfireswig · 17/07/2020 20:44

Probably on average £20 a month. I alternate between having a couple of beers or couple of glasses of prosecco at the weekend. Occasionally have a g&t or vodka and coke, so have lots of different gins and vodkas - some of which quite expensive but last ages. I finished bottle of vodka last week that was bought for Christmas drinks last year Grin

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 17/07/2020 20:45

A lot more since lockdown as we're out less and don't tend to drink when out and about since DS, more likely to be doing family activities and driving. Probably around £100-£120 a month at the moment, that's hipster local IPA for DH, mainly wine for me but I can be a bit fussy, I don't drink Blossom hill etc which is usually on offer, and a good bottle of French grain vodka or nice spiced rum, but probably only two of those each a year. So might sound like a lot of money but it's not a huge amount of alcohol, DH has a growler a week delivered and I probably have two or three bottles of wine a month and the odd vodka with soda or tonic, one or two a month. So context is also important, if we spent £120 a month on supermarket own brand strong cider or would be a hell of lot more alcohol.
Although our local Italian restaurant owner told me recently where they get their house gris, you don't usually get it in the UK it's between white and rosé but not sweet, it's a wholesaler so I bought two cases.... In my defence doing that worked out at six pounds a bottle rather than the £24 in the restaurant! (I asked if he'd deliver one with a takeaway)

Serin · 17/07/2020 20:45

Usually just one bottle of wine a week.
Since lockdown about £100+ a month on lager and Pimms, as we have the 18, 19 and 22 yr old back home.

Tr1skel1on · 17/07/2020 20:47

About £100 a month for 2 adults. I'm really shocked. No wonder I feel skint sometimes!

At least it's easy to cut out. Thank you OP. Made me think

LockdownLump · 17/07/2020 20:47

i would be worried if something happend to our child i wouldnt be able to drive them to the hospital

One word. Taxi.

What do you think people do who can't drive or haven't got a car?

LimeLemonOrange · 17/07/2020 20:47

Last month DH spent £90, but this month (which isn't yet finished) he's spent £190 already.

He's buying craft beer and wine.

I very rarely buy myself anything, wear the same old clothes, don't go to hairdresser etc, but I do have the occasional big spend on writing courses.

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 17/07/2020 20:49

We don't smoke or vape

mrsbyers · 17/07/2020 20:49

I don’t drink but I do but nice cordials etc so would say to husband to buy some beers - anything over that in terms of value he pays out of his money not the house kitty

PregnancySucksTCJ · 17/07/2020 20:49

Before I got pregnant we would spend about £400 a month on booze. I love Prosecco, DH likes gin and rum, we both like beer and the occasional bottle of rose. My DH is also not drinking during my pregnancy as he knows how hard it is for me so now we spend a big fat £0 on booze and I miss it haha

RedlightGreenlight · 17/07/2020 20:50

£50 per week for 3 adults Shock

HowLongCanICallitBabyWeight · 17/07/2020 20:52

Craft beer is expensive DH loves it, in particular hazey new England style IPAs..... His intake peaked mid proper lockdown when the local microbrewery started delivering, novelty has worn off now though. I wouldn't be on with it if we couldn't afford it or if he'd begrudge anything I was spending on like my two cases of wine

40somethingJBJ · 17/07/2020 20:52

Usually (pre-Covid) a bottle of wine per week with my Aldi shop, so £5 or so, plus £10 at the pub on a Friday night a couple of times a month. At the moment, I’m not visiting the pub, but I’m buying a couple of bottles of wine a week now.

DisobedientHamster · 17/07/2020 20:52

i would be worried if something happend to our child i wouldnt be able to drive them to the hospital

So you get a taxi. How do you think people who don't drive or don't have a car manage? The legal limit in Scotland is so low it would mean you'd have to be teetotal with your mentality, not that there is anything wrong with being teetotal, my h is, although I enjoy about a bottle a week or so.

HoomanMoomin · 17/07/2020 20:54

Maybe £100 a year or so.

Duvetdweller · 17/07/2020 20:55

I’ve just spent £200 at majestic - 3/4 weeks?!

Pebblexox · 17/07/2020 20:55

It's really dependent. Usually we buy a crate of beer a week so about £12 and two/three bottles of wine which is about £15-20. However we don't drink it all. We have quite a good alcohol stash, and some weeks when the cupboard is full we don't buy any. So it can be anything between £30-£70 ish a month.

AnnaNimmity · 17/07/2020 20:56

I get about 2/3 bottles of wine with the weekly shop probably about £8 a bottle. A bottle of gin every few weeks (and tonic). Haven't opened it for a couple of weeks though. And this week because I fancy it, a bottle of whisky which will last me weeks. I don't really go out. £190 a month for one person does seem a lot.

Chocolateandamaretto · 17/07/2020 20:56

I’ll buy 12 bottles of wine every other month which costs £80-90, then a crate of beer once a month for £10-15. So I guess about £50 a month regularly. Replace gin, whiskey etc when needed but realistically a couple of times a year.

If we also smoked I’d probably cut that down tbh as it’s quite a lot.

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 17/07/2020 20:57

We rarely drink but buy about £160 of weed every month / 2 months.

VettiyaIruken · 17/07/2020 20:57

Under a fiver a week. I don't drink and my husband has a four pack of Guinness a week.

Don't ask how much I spend on Häagen-Dazs !

CatBatCat · 17/07/2020 20:58

£10ish a month. Few bottles of cider each on 1 weekend.
