To ask how much your household spends on alcohol

LimeLemonOrange · 17/07/2020 20:08

DH and I are arguing about how much is reasonable to spend on booze each month.

He drinks, I don't. So to help me work out if I'm being unreasonable I'm asking how much you spend (and for how many drinkers) so I can understand what's reasonable.

Also he smokes, vapes and smokes weed and those all add up as well. I just see it all as a huge waste of money.

£0

VictoriaBun · 18/07/2020 09:16

We have alcohol in the house but don't really drink. I think the last time I had a drink was probably Christmas and I don't think my dh bothered even then. I'd say we spend less than £25 a year and maybe even less.

ajs88 · 18/07/2020 09:19

Sorry OP just saw your follow up...

I've been there and done that with an ex who wasted money while I went without. He never 'got it'that he could only do so because I was waited to see what was left for myself, and that we only had savings (that he enjoyed the comfort of having) because I still went without. I was just The Nag. After we broke up he really struggled to balance his budget and even apologized for not getting it.

Anyway, I don't presume that you have the major issues (of which this was just one) that I did. But I would say buy yourself the new dress, go to the hairdressers, spend what he does on himself on yourself, and if you run out of money then you'll both just to cut down.

The role model thing is important though, that's where I would focus my energy on

bigcatlittlecatcardboardbox · 18/07/2020 09:20

@Givenupno we do! DH and I are early 30s, no kids, reasonably high earners. LOVE eating out and we're big socialisers.

We probably spend £150 over a weekend on food/drink out, maybe three weekends out of four. Once a month(ish) we have a delivery from an independent wine merchant that's about £150, which we share with friends when they come over.

We both know this will be scaled back considerably when we have DCs so we're enjoying now while we can 🤷🏼‍♀️

SchrodingersImmigrant · 18/07/2020 09:23

100-150 a month usually. We like options so we have wine, beer including craft and occasionally buy bottle of spiritsGrin
I stopped smoking, but because I had foreign ciggies my habit was only about 80 a month with 20 a day...

He is taking a piss.

delilahbucket · 18/07/2020 09:29

It varies. Anything from £7-£70 a week. DP makes his own beer. He makes cider for me which only costs £7 for 12 bottles and I wouldn't have more than one bottle in an evening as it is like wine, so when that is ready I won't be buying anything else.
I like variety, so we've got several types of wine and spirits in the house. I spent £48 online with Aldi this week as they have a wine event on. That was five bottles of wine and a bottle of rum. The wine will probably last 2-3 weeks depending on if I'm sharing, and the rum probably four weeks.
Wouldn't say we are big drinkers though. This week I had two rum and Cokes on Wednesday and we split a bottle of wine last night. We're eating out tonight but I'm driving so may have a glass of wine or a G&T when we get home.

CherryPavlova · 18/07/2020 09:33

No idea, it would depend what counted in the overall spend. We order a lot a couple of times a year rather than weekly. A couple of bottles of wine must be around £60, the odd G&T, a bottle if were out for supper. Maybe an Aperol if it’s a sunny evening. Not a huge amount, unless it’s some sort of celebration.

It’s irrelevant what others spend. The money doesn’t sound like the problem. I couldn’t live with a smoker or someone taking drugs. It’s his choice but the impact and potential impact is huge.

OnceUponAPotato · 18/07/2020 09:53

Neither of us really drink at the moment, when we did maybe £50-100 per month, depending on how much we went out.

I don't think the actual amount is that relevant though. To me it's: does his drinking impact your lives negatively? And do you spend a similar amount on something just for you? DH and I have joint money and personal money, if just one of us was spending notable amounts on booze it would be coming from personal money.

Meggie2008 · 18/07/2020 09:58

In the house, probably a case of beer a week for my partner, and a case of fruit cider a fortnight for me, so maybe £16 a week if you split it down?

The pubs where we are are cheap, so if we go out, we could probably be about £30-£40, but that would get us about 6 drinks each 😂

onwheels · 18/07/2020 10:01

3 bottles of wine per week - £30 each week. So around £130 per month. shit, that's actually a lot.

onwheels · 18/07/2020 10:03

that's two drinker

lovelyupnorth · 18/07/2020 10:05

£20-30 a month - couple bottles of wine or some cider/beer.

Don’t smoke or vape

LEELULUMPKIN · 18/07/2020 10:06

Zero on a weekly/monthly basis. We don't drink alcohol neither at home or a pub.

We will get a bottle of Jack Daniels Honey for DH & a bottle of Baileys for me at Christmas or if we are staycationing in a cottage etc but that's about it.

We don't need booze to have fun and it seems like such an expensive waste of money which could be spent on far better things.

rottiemum88 · 18/07/2020 10:07

Two adults. I'll generally have a bottle of wine per week at £10ish and DH roughly the same on a few craft beers. So £20/week or £80-100/month roughly

rottiemum88 · 18/07/2020 10:09

We don't need booze to have fun and it seems like such an expensive waste of money which could be spent on far better things.

If you don't need alcohol to have fun Hmm then why do you still buy it for special occasions like Christmas or when you're on holiday?

Merryoldgoat · 18/07/2020 10:20

There’s always someone sanctimonious on these alcohol threads 🙄

LEELULUMPKIN · 18/07/2020 10:23

Because when I was growing up that is exactly what my parents did, Alcohol was purely for those two special occasions and that has stuck with me!

It's a bit like Christmas just isn't Christmas without sprouts even though I detest them! I have to have certain items in the house as part of my Family's traditions, daft really!

The bottle of Baileys that we got at Christmas is still in the fridge and probably will still be there come the next

LEELULUMPKIN · 18/07/2020 10:27

I am sorry if it came across as sanctimonius as I can assure you that was definitely NOT the spirit (pardon the pun) of my post.

I have no problem whatsoever with people who do drink and enjoy it, Good for them.

I was merely answering the original question and explaining why we didn't.

I couldn't care less how much or little other people spend. I have other vices which no doubt would seem a waste of money to someone else.

I wasn't judging at all, honestly.

zingally · 18/07/2020 10:31

Very, very, very occasional social drinkers. Maybe £40 a year.

victoriashleigh · 18/07/2020 10:45

We order 6 bottles of wine from Aldi every 10-14 days which is about £32 but that’s pretty much it on a regular basis.

We have some spirits in for guests or the odd cocktail which I will replace as and when they’re finished and I do also love a Baileys which I’ll buy if it’s on offer!

Merryoldgoat · 18/07/2020 11:03

@LEELULUMPKIN

Apologies for taking your comment out of context. I’m having a shitty morning but that’s not your fault.

QueenCT · 18/07/2020 11:47

@Givenupno local pub - maybe once a year
Nights out the same (I probably drink my entire years units!)
Meal out I wouldn't generally drink but again no
I can't really afford it, and my friends are all married/in couples and I'm single so we don't socialise really Sad

AngelicInnocent · 18/07/2020 12:29

I'm amazed at the number of people who seem to spend a small mortgage payment (400 to 600) per month on alcohol.

Shoxfordian · 18/07/2020 12:37

@Givenupno
We usually go out at least once a week for dinner, went out last night for the first time since lockdown. If you include drinking alcohol out, then we definitely spend more than I said before. Dinner is usually 100 at least, obviously not all alcohol but alcohol probably half of that.

Not getting a mortgage where I live for 400 a month though!

shinyredbus · 18/07/2020 12:47

Depends really. We can spend 20 a week and sometimes 150 a week. On average I would say 200-ish per month - My husband drinks whiskey and he’s picky, will only drink craft beers, sometimes red wine. I love making cocktails so that costs quite a bit. I Also like Prosecco so we stock up on that. It also does depend if you can afford it - if we couldn’t, I would prob just stick to fruit ciders.
