To ask how much your household spends on alcohol

LimeLemonOrange · 17/07/2020 20:08

DH and I are arguing about how much is reasonable to spend on booze each month.

He drinks, I don't. So to help me work out if I'm being unreasonable I'm asking how much you spend (and for how many drinkers) so I can understand what's reasonable.

Also he smokes, vapes and smokes weed and those all add up as well. I just see it all as a huge waste of money.

Loads. A bottle or 2 of Prosecco each week in our food shop and probably 1-2 orders a month of expensive small batch craft beer. I’m into a very specific type of beer that supermarkets don’t sell and my husband likes certain breweries which cost a bit more. Those orders are usually £60+ to take advantage of free delivery and you don’t get as much for your money as standard beer! But we don’t have kids and i’d rather have one really good beer than a couple of crappy ones!

Abouttimemum · 17/07/2020 22:03

I don’t really drink but DH will get through 2 bottles of wine a week and he doesn’t have particularly good taste, so maybe 10-15 quid. Nothing to write home about. We spend outrageous amounts on food though!

Abouttimemum · 17/07/2020 22:06

Also weed would be a dealbreaker for me

sqirrelfriends · 17/07/2020 22:08

It depends, we maybe have a bottle of wine to share (around £10-15) and a few beers. So about £20 between us.

DH also drinks a few different and very expensive whiskey's. I have no idea what it would cost per week or month though as they seem to last forever.

DarkMintChocolate · 17/07/2020 22:41

£5 a month on the cheapest bottle of red wine for cooking, I can find for the three of us. Once in a blue moon, the cheapest bottle of sherry for cooking Chinese food.

DH only drinks the odd bottle of wine, he gets for his birthday or Xmas. I don’t usually drink at all. DD shouldn’t drink at all either.

sbhydrogen · 17/07/2020 22:45

Hmm, I buy about one or two bottles a week or so, sooooo probably about £30-£40 a month.

Whatever you can afford really, that's it.

When it gets beyond that, there may be a problem.

justanotherneighinparadise · 17/07/2020 22:49

Whatever 2 bottles of beer work out at. I think around £2.75 a week.

Boobahs · 17/07/2020 23:02

£0. Neither of us drink or smoke.

Justgorgeous · 17/07/2020 23:52

£0. Don’t drink or smoke. Buy really nice food though.

DanniArthur · 18/07/2020 00:00

DP and I arent big drinkers. We haven't bought much alcohol since near years as we still have Jack Daniel's, gin, rum, brandy, vodka and wine left from then (had a party) We did buy two crates of ciders and a crate of beers for a BBQ recently but that's it. It's not a weekly occurrence though.

flirtygirl · 18/07/2020 00:08

£30 a year.

LimeLemonOrange · 18/07/2020 00:12

Really interesting to read everyone's responses. A few of you have asked what I think about the weed.

I'd rather he didn't smoke it. But he at least manages it well. He's very good at his job, his mental health is very solid (someone mentioned MH and weed), he works harder and faster than everyone I've ever met, does all our cooking, laundry and washing up, is ace as a dad to the kids, is a supportive DH.

My main issues with him drinking, smoking weed, cigs and vaping are a) waste of so much money b) health implications and c) him role modelling it all to the kids.

If I'd been a better decision maker earlier in life I perhaps wouldn't have had kids with such a heavy smoker and drinker, but it's a bit late for that now!

Christ.

I don't even want to try and add up our lockdown alcohol spend.

And we're Irish.... Grin

Northernsoulgirl45 · 18/07/2020 00:23

Varies from zero to about £30 per week. Currently zero as neither of us are drinking right now.

IdblowJonSnow · 18/07/2020 00:25

I get through a small bottle of vodka every few months. Sometimes have a glass of wine. DH drinks beer or wine more nights than not but usually a few nights off a week. I think we both drink too much, him more than me.
Maybe 20 a week? Or a bit more.

MissConductUS · 18/07/2020 00:29

Nothing. I'm teetotal and DH only drinks a few times per year at family functions. Neither of us smokes.

gwenneh · 18/07/2020 00:34

Nothing, we don’t drink. I have bottles that have been given as gifts, used in the rare occasion I want something to cook with.

DH vapes but that doesn’t come out of the household budget.

Lyricallie · 18/07/2020 00:34

Fiance gets his beer box which is £24pm and we bought some kahlua a month ago for espresso martinis and we still have some left. So usually £24 might add a other £25 on there if we've been out for drinks but obviously we haven't in a while.

Givenupno · 18/07/2020 00:37

Nights out as well as at home? For two of us?

£500 a month easy - that’s conservative. A night out is £50 on booze without frying and that’s three times a week minimum.

Tonight we stayed home. I had 8 cans of lager and some whiskey. The Mrs has run and coke and some wine.

Energem · 18/07/2020 00:41

Nothing. Dont drink
I'm surprised at the number of teetotals... how do/did you socialise? I come from a non drinking culture country and find it hard to feel accepted

Mintjulia · 18/07/2020 00:51

£0 at the moment.

Nat6999 · 18/07/2020 01:14

I don't drink alcohol, have been clean over 3 years, have recently started buying alcohol free wine, other than that I buy posh cordial & soda water.

Redshoeblueshoe · 18/07/2020 01:29

Newschapter I guess that's more than everyone else on this thread put together Grin Wine
