To ask how much your household spends on alcohol

DH and I are arguing about how much is reasonable to spend on booze each month.

He drinks, I don't. So to help me work out if I'm being unreasonable I'm asking how much you spend (and for how many drinkers) so I can understand what's reasonable.

Also he smokes, vapes and smokes weed and those all add up as well. I just see it all as a huge waste of money.

I'm a single parent so I'm the only one who drinks alcohol in the house. I like a drink but I limit myself to Friday and Saturday nights only as I could easily get into the habit of drinking every night otherwise.

I drink vodka, I drink about 35cl a week (half a 70cl bottle) and I like decent branded vodka so it costs about £20 every 2 weeks.

GardenOfRaman · 17/07/2020 20:58

I don't drink alcohol, though I spend £5ish a week on Coke Zero.
DH spends about £10 a week on booze to drink at home. If we eat out he'd have a couple of alcoholic drinks with a meal.

Pebblexox · 17/07/2020 21:00

i would be worried if something happend to our child i wouldnt be able to drive them to the hospital
^^
I don't currently drive, my dh is the driver in our household (I can drive, have a car but have never taken my test) I would never begrudge him a few drinks just on the chance we'd need to go to the hospital or somewhere quickly. I'd get a taxi, or ask somebody to take us. It's no different than if you were both to go out to the pub and have a few drinks. There are always other options.

Ragwort · 17/07/2020 21:00

Surely its irrelevant what other people spend, you have to look at your budget and lifestyle - we spend a fair bit on alcohol - £50 a week ish, I have recently really cut down my drinking but DH drinks a few beers every evening and doesn't go 'out' to drink.

We can afford it - but I wouldn't be impressed if my DH was smoking, vaping and doing weed - that would be incompatible with my lifestyle and would be a deal breaker.
Are you not bothered about the weed?

Porcupineinwaiting · 17/07/2020 21:02

About £6-£8 a week. That's for dh, I don't drink.

GracieLane · 17/07/2020 21:04

About a fiver a year, it goes in the food

AdultierAdult · 17/07/2020 21:04

Wow this thread makes me feel bad. We are buying about 3 bottles a week in lockdown £10-12 a bottle so about £140 a month. We spend more than double if we go out a lot. Last night we stopped at a bar for a couple of drinks each and it came to £23. We don’t smoke though.

User1988 · 17/07/2020 21:07

I can't drink much at the moment as I have a little baby, but when I wasn't breastfeeding /co-sleeping...between two adults, we'd have a bottle of wine between us at the weekend (£7ish), and probably get through a couple of boxes of beer a month. So maybe about £60? We'd have heavier and lighter weeks or months though. Beer mostly for dh in the week. Id make a bottle of gin last a few months. God I miss those times!

TheFormerPorpentinaScamander · 17/07/2020 21:08

£0

MrsJBaptiste · 17/07/2020 21:10

Interesting as I've genuinely never really added it up...

As an average, DH probably has 12 ales a week (£20), I have a couple of bottles of prosecco (£20), a few gins (£20 bottle every month or two) and a bottle of wine (£8) so maybe £200 a month?

That's all drinking in the house though, if you price up going out for drinks then you can double those costs above!

scoobydoo1971 · 17/07/2020 21:12

Single parent here. I was spending £60-£80 per month on nice brandy and bottles of Thai beer. However, now on opiate patches so no more booze for me. I have saved around £160 in two months and lost about 5kg from those alcohol calories (not on a diet). If I can ever drink again, it will be far more moderately as my skin has improved and the morning fog has lifted a little.

SpinningLikeATop · 17/07/2020 21:15

We don't drink at all, so £0.
However, in all seriousness, it depends. Are you worried about the amount your husband is drinking? It's not so much the amount of money really. I also wouldn't be happy with the smoking weed.

OxfordMum1983 · 17/07/2020 21:20

very little, i don't drink and dh has a beer perhaps every 2-3 wks
occasional drinks for dh if we go out, which is rare ( even pre covid)

We do spend about £10 a week on diet coke...which we love

SallyWD · 17/07/2020 21:23

We buy about 1 bottle of wine per month. Rock and roll!

BlessYourCottonSocks · 17/07/2020 21:30

Zero. DH used to drink quite a bit when young and single. So did I to be fair. Both of us were social drinkers more than anything else and have never bothered drinking at home. We don't go to the pub any more..maybe 3 times a year and DH will have two or three pints and I'll drive. I'm not fussed about alcohol.

I used to smoke quite heavily and I think it annoyed him how much I spent on cigarettes but it was my money, so he didn't say anything.

PenelopePitstop49 · 17/07/2020 21:33

We spent around £200 at Christmas, and most of it is still there 7 months later ..........

I will buy the odd bottle of Pinot Grigio if I go to M & S on the off chance but other than that, we just don't drink. We keep some in for visitors/birthdays/holidays.

fairlyplump · 17/07/2020 21:34

£0

covetingthepreciousthings · 17/07/2020 21:35

Very little, if anything at all.

Probably the cost of one Koppaberg every few months.

user1493494961 · 17/07/2020 21:37

Zero.

redastherose · 17/07/2020 21:37

A couple of bottles of wine a week and the odd glass of something else occasionally. Probably around £20 ish but obvs more if out socialising.

aNiceBigCupOfFuCoffee · 17/07/2020 21:39

Barely anything, these days! DH has a couple of cheap beers a week (although not every week). I don't drink - stopped to have DD and didn't miss it so haven't bothered with it since. If I did decide I wanted to drink we have a cupboard full of spirits and I'd maybe need to buy some mixers or some fruit to go in them. We spend more on fizzy drinks and juice to be honest! Pre-pregnancy I'd say we probably spent £20 a week either on a couple of bottles of wine or a bottle of spirits.

ChavvySexPond · 17/07/2020 21:49

Next to None.

We gave it up when we were saving up and never went back. We have the odd glass of champagne at a wedding. Or the odd gin, bottle of beer or glass of wine when out-out. Neither of us have had a drink this year yet.

LBOCS2 · 17/07/2020 21:52

About £150-200 a month? We buy a couple of reasonably priced bottles of wine with each weekly shop. Maybe a bottle of spirits a fortnight, and DH has a fortnightly beer delivery.

Camomila · 17/07/2020 21:54

Maybe £5 a month, occasionally share a fruit cider or have a glass of prosecco while watching a movie with some sweets, otherwise we don't really drink much.

rosiejaune · 17/07/2020 21:58

None (unless you count a bottle of wine a year for cooking).
