Two days ago I was walking in a seaside town in Devon, with two dogs and two children. After a stressful time at work, we wanted to have a few days off. Our break turned pretty hellish with children not sleeping at all and lots going wrong. On this last day, my Labrador tried to attack another dog, knocked over my 2 year old child while doing it and I lost it. I smacked him and shouted at him. It was kind of the last straw. Two women passing by stopped and had a go at me, saying I should never treat an animal like that. My husband told them to back off. He later said that he saw the one crying on the other’s shoulder (they looked like grown up mother and daughter) so they were clearly very upset by the incident. If this was YOU, or you know who this was, then I want to say sorry. I’m ashamed at my behaviour. Hoping to get some help for me to deal with my anger and I’ve already booked some specialist dog training to help with that situation.

Hurting a defenceless animal, oooh you’re hard.

englishrosie · 19/07/2020 17:16

You must have gone HAM on your poor dog for those women to be so upset. Re home the dog. I’m sure it will be a lot happier.
@flowergirl24 This is one of the worst threads I've seen in a while. I really hope you're ok. You've made a mistake, you've apologised and are going out of your way to make sure it doesn't happen again. Please ignore the nasty people on this thread who are so obviously getting a thrill from kicking you while you're down. Frankly I think they should be more ashamed than you.

You had a bad day. You snapped. It happens. We're all human.
Yep. This. OP if I were you, I'd delete the thread. Some people just want a target to abuse and you're making yourself a target.

Russell19 · 19/07/2020 19:03

OP's target must be her poor, defenceless dog then. I don't wang a target I just don't want animals to be beaten.

PattyCake45 · 19/07/2020 19:08

@Russell19 Haven't you had enough yet? Seriously what's wrong with you? Just stop.

HeronLanyon · 19/07/2020 19:12

russell19 the way I read it nor does the op. She recognised what she did was wrong and is getting help. Leave the woman alone surely.
I would have been likely to cry (Actually would have been furious) at seeing a dog hit But ffs op posted thoughtful regretful and insightful post.

Mittens030869 · 19/07/2020 20:05

@Russell19 I think you've got your message across by now, and the OP is getting help. What exactly do you want to achieve with your obsession with going on at the OP? You're making yourself look ridiculous now. Hmm

wildone84 · 19/07/2020 21:36

I think you need to back off now.

She knows she has made a mistake. She's even asked for help from people on here. OP presumably is not a serial animal abuser. Most animal abusers don't even care or feel remorse. That she does feel remorse for these acts, is a sign she is not a serial animal abuser. I expect the dog has forgiven her.

BluebellForest836 · 19/07/2020 21:45

You sound utterly vile hitting your poor dog 3 times. People like you shouldn’t own animals.

Boredbumhead · 19/07/2020 21:54

@Russell19 and others who are having a go. Have any of had a young child bowled over by a dog? I have and it does give you the rage. It's a maternal instinct thing.

wildone84 · 19/07/2020 22:01

@BluebellForest836

And you sound very unpleasant for abusing someone who has already expressed remorse and taking steps to make sure this doesn't happen again.
winetime89 · 19/07/2020 23:18

God what is up with people on here. There is so many mean people about intent on making people feel bad, I assume it makes yourselves feel better?
op made a mistake, I'm a massive dog/ animal lover I can't even kill a fly but it's pretty obvious this was a one off. the op is riddled with guilt as it is. sometimes we act out of character when we're stressed/ scared/ shocked.

Busymum45 · 19/07/2020 23:56

Hope that dog is taken off you, lowest of the low thing to do and no excuse for it.

TheSandman · 20/07/2020 03:17

Dear gods, there are some weird people in the world.

One. Dogs are not 'defenceless' They're fecking carnivorous! You know - teeth and claws?

Look - here's a list of people killed by these 'defenceless' animals in the UK:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_dog_attacks_in_the_United_Kingdom

Two: How many people going "Ooooh poor little doggy woggy" eat meat? So happy happy to eat animals which are arguably more intelligent than dogs - at least smarter than those yappy little shitstained arse ones. Happy to eat animals that have been stunned, gutted, hacked up, and ground into paste. But scream blue fecking murder when one of the dogs' pack puts it in its place. Right.

This was not systematic abuse, this wasn't cruelty this was a very minor domestic squabble between two members - albeit from different species - of the same family.

Totally agree. If you have observe dogs or cats, when kittens or puppies step out of line, they get whacked by mother cat/mother dog. The dog will have understood what OP meant by smacking it when it knocked over her child and went for anther dog. It's not a great way to train an animal, but at least OP is looking into other ways to do differently next time.
wildone84 · 20/07/2020 03:29

*if you observe

DressingGownofDoom · 20/07/2020 04:35

Anger and irritability can be a sign of depression, so make sure to speak to your GP.

It was an unfortunate incident but it's done now, you're taking steps to address your mental health, if you feel like you're a risk to your dog again then start to think about rehoming.

UsedUpUsername · 20/07/2020 04:58

But anyone who thinks that is genuine animal abuse is in the fortunate position of never having witnessed any (I used to volunteer at an amimal shelter in the Middle East and I won't tell you some of the things that went on there)

Agree

Dullardmullard · 20/07/2020 06:38

3 smacks and it’s a beating what crap

Op have a bloody a gin And forget about it

You had an Of day we all do

Oh and if it was mine it would of been smacked also and I have a giant breed plus have any of you witness an actual dog fight they are nasty and bloody. Oh and folks saying that. Dogs will become more aggressive after a few smacks are delusional. No they don’t.

Busymum45 · 20/07/2020 21:48

Disagree but wanted to.add hope the dog is ok, and hope you.get the help you need op.

chubbyhotchoc · 20/07/2020 21:57

Oh god not a dog thread. People are crazy on here about dogs. When my dd was about two a dog jumped on her back at the park and tried to hump her. It got one of my size eights up its backside for sure. No regrets about that.

I have dogs. I have been a pet owner for many years. If my dog did that I would have given him a smack as well. Never mind the woman who told you off, and stop beating yourself up over it.
