Just that.

Agreed gindaddyredux - watched Smack the Pony recently from the late 90s and couldn't quite believe how thin they all were. That's not the norm on TV any longer.

bluebeck · 12/07/2020 19:34

I think fatphobic was the wrong word OP. You didn't mean afraid of fat?

You mean sizeist, yes?

I think most of us think it is preferable to be what the medical experts define as a healthy weight. This has been brought home even more keenly during the pandemic.

ItsSummer · 12/07/2020 19:34

Name one positive about being fat.

There isn’t one. And there are so many health problems caused by it.

That’s where the negativity comes from.

Soubriquet · 12/07/2020 19:37

You’re harder to kidnap if you’re fat?
LaurieFairyCake · 12/07/2020 19:38

Fat hatred yes.

Common throughout society. Are they phobic? Possibly, not sure about that.

roarfeckingroar · 12/07/2020 19:38

Fatphobic. You mean we have an irrational fear of fat? Or fat people?

I would say I have a perfectly rational fear of being fat. Awful for your general health.

I'm not scared of fat people as I could probably out run them. Joking. I do think many people should take better care of themselves and have more self control regarding food.

Ha that's a really good illustration, I'll have to rewatch it now you said it!

There's so many examples of it - we've shifted to something else entirely especially in the UK, and it has crept up on us.

I am all, all for body positivity because these girls and boys who are growing up in households where they haven't had the right information or they're eating a certain way due to factors in their life, then they need to be happy with themselves before any other consideration.

I don't think it's fatphobic however to point out that a fair few people's DDs and DSs are big, big people compared to what I saw as a child in the 90s. I didn't see that many large kids. I just didn't. Now? 1 in 2 maybe?

roarfeckingroar · 12/07/2020 19:39

Aren't you just a peach.

Beebee8 · 12/07/2020 19:40

People are literally posting fat jokes, way to probe my point!

Fatphobia is the commonly used term to describe (from Google) The fear and dislike of fat people and the stigmatization of individuals with bigger bodies

Yeah but if you're not careful we might sit on you.Grin

BellyMama · 12/07/2020 19:40

@GinDaddyRedux I agree that things are changing but I still think the vast majority of people see thin = good and fat = bad. Due to this I think people would be very wary of making comments that someone is too thin but will happily slate someone for being fat and this to me suggests there’s still a lot of prejudice out there. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think we should be encouraging people to be unhealthy but I think we should allow people to manage their own bodies without fear of abuse. I also think a lot of these ‘role models’ portray a ‘healthy lifestyle’ or ‘hard work’ being the cause of their aesthetically pleasing shape, when sometimes this is not even close to the case.

PablosHoney · 12/07/2020 19:41

I don’t want to be fat, don’t care if anyone else is fat though, don’t see how it affects me.

LittleDonk · 12/07/2020 19:42

I am fat, and also scary.

Beebee8 · 12/07/2020 19:42

@PablosHoney I'm glad you feel this way, because a person being fat should be of no concern to anybody else!

OP posts:
h3av3n · 12/07/2020 19:43

I see the opposite on mumsnet to be honest? I see a lot of people being delusional about what a healthy weight/size for example a recent thread had many people saying 'size 16 isn't that big'

roarfeckingroar · 12/07/2020 19:44

@ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble paha right now I'm pregnant so not if I sit on you or eat you first!

OP you're not coming across well. Of course society judges people by their weight. Part of human cognitive processing is to make instant assumptions based on appearance. I think Mumsnet is one of the places you're least likely to get away with being nasty about a person's size.

Try offering something constructive or interesting, hey, before calling us all big ignorant meanies. Oops, shouldn't have said big...

sangrias · 12/07/2020 19:45

If you mean people are not so positive about bodies that are grossly overweight...

Yes I would agree. Most people who are not grossly overweight would not be complimentary about the aesthetics and health implications etc. of obesity.
And those who are morbidly obese themselves rarely seem positive about it. Of course there are exceptions.

BellyMama · 12/07/2020 19:45

@Soubriquet 😂😂😂

In terms of positives to being fat I suppose it depends on what you term fat?? Like I could say the same about being thin and say there were no positives to being thin if I meant being a 5ft4 adult who weighs 6 stone?

WorraLiberty · 12/07/2020 19:45
@PablosHoney I'm glad you feel this way, because a person being fat should be of no concern to anybody else!
Unless that person's a child relying on their parents to feed them and see they get enough exercise.

If adults are happy being fat it's their life.

PablosHoney · 12/07/2020 19:46

Yes children are a different matter.

FancyPants20 · 12/07/2020 19:46

Well, tbf, if you're fat, it's almost always because you're taking in more calories than you're using, for whatever reason.
I'm reasonably slim, but I smoke/vape and drink too much, which is really unhealthy. It's not as obviously unhealthy as being really fat/obese is though, so I get away with my unhealthy habits a lot more, from a purely societal point of view.
Also though, I personally know two men who've died in their late forties/early fifties from heart attacks related to their weight, which puts the shits up me rather a lot.

Beebee8 · 12/07/2020 19:46

@roarfeckingroar I might, but it's not my job to educate you, and nobody really responds to constructive or interesting, sadly.

Was genuinely wondering if people realised that fatshaming is rife on here

OP posts:
BellyMama · 12/07/2020 19:47

And guys a size 16 frequently isn’t that fat - Liv Tyler was a size 16 for years and you can’t say she was grossly fat surely?!

Burpalot · 12/07/2020 19:47

Being fat is shit. It's better to be thin. Being fat negatively affects your health and yes a fat person might be 'healthier' than an unhealthy thin person - but it'd be better if they were thin.

Gobb · 12/07/2020 19:47

Yes, for sure. I've seen a couple of threads where women refer to themselves as hideous monsters, disgusting, scum of the earth, all because they've gained a couple of stone. It's one thing to prefer not to be fat, and it's another thing to layer on such self hatred, and presumably hatred of other fat bodies
