Is it cruel to throw sea monkeys away?

MIL got the the kids sea monkeys for Xmas I've only been the one bothered about them. They freak me out more than anything and can't bare the thought of bringing them to the new house.

Are these the type of pets you give away? Are they pets I don't know 🤣

I always wanted sea monkeys as a kid. I remember seeing them in the back of comics, they had features and faces and looked fascinating. Slightly disappointed as an adult to find out they're actually like head lice that live in water. I feel like I should sue those comics under the trades description act.

underneaththeash · 08/07/2020 19:23

They can definitely go down the toilet.

What's the difference between buying frozen brine shrimp for my fish and feeding them live ones? Why is that more ethical?

scrivette · 08/07/2020 19:23

The garden centres sell boxes of live crickets and other types of creatures for people to feed to their pet Geckos and Bearded Dragons etc. If you go at feeding time you can often see them chasing their prey.

You definitely should. They’re not even proper monkeys, FFS! Angry

NotPayingAttention · 08/07/2020 19:24

I trust that any headlice in your family are carefully nurtured into a raging infestation?

FourTeaFallOut · 08/07/2020 19:25

They look like little nudist Whos from Whoville!

The frozen ones all lived a good, long life and died peacefully in their sleep of natural causes. Smile

I already feel like voting for this thread in Mumsnet Classics...

I particularly loved the suggestion of the best way to kill them being blunt force trauma, as if that is feasible, realistic or kind!

OP please keep us updated on the Fate Of The Seamonkeys...

LoseLooseLucy · 08/07/2020 19:26

Aww I couldn't do it, I'd feel mean 😑

Jux · 08/07/2020 19:26

I had some for over a year once! I thought they were fascinating.

I thought they were almost magic. If their water dries up - in a puddle say - then they dehydrate, but when it rains and the puddle returns, they rehydrate.

You could just put them in a pond or a stream. I wasn't aware they were sea creatures; I certainly never put salt in their water, it just came straight from the tap.

Rainbowchampagne · 08/07/2020 19:29

Where does everyone stand on wasps? Grin

FourTeaFallOut · 08/07/2020 19:29

Carefully, with a shoe.

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 19:30

😝😝😝😝

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 19:31

What about bed bugs? You should feel happy if they choose you and suckle them on your lifeblood.

BobFleming · 08/07/2020 19:32

This thread is a hoot.

I have been reading many of the comments out to my family - very funny. Especially the 'so are head lice' comment Grin

I've lost count of the number of sea monkeys we have nurtured in this house. I have also forgotten what became of them, but we never willfully killed them. My son (21) clearly has fond memories as he bought himself some at uni.

Peasbewithyou · 08/07/2020 19:33

I think it’s because I chose to bring them in to our home and hatch them so I felt responsible for them.

I don’t feel that way about head lice. Grin

OverUnderSidewaysDown · 08/07/2020 19:33

According to this article you can teach them to do tricks:
animals.mom.me/how-to-train-sea-monkeys-2307117.html

s113 · 08/07/2020 19:33

@PablosHoney Pinatas are OK if you blindfold the children, so they can't see what they're hitting. Smile

Persiaclementine · 08/07/2020 19:33

@slipperywhensparticus

do sea monkeys breathe?
In their own way yes Hmm
Leaannb · 08/07/2020 19:34

I breed them to feed my fish. It's what they would eat in the wild

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 19:35

@s113 What’s worse is that it was a unicorn, they don’t even exist!!

FourTeaFallOut · 08/07/2020 19:37

That's an article which is trying to get you to but the toys to train your sea monkey @OverUnderSidewaysDown

FourTeaFallOut · 08/07/2020 19:37

Buy!

Greydrapex · 08/07/2020 19:38

Of course it’s bloody cruel! They dint live long anyway.
