Is it cruel to throw sea monkeys away?

MIL got the the kids sea monkeys for Xmas I've only been the one bothered about them. They freak me out more than anything and can't bare the thought of bringing them to the new house.

Are these the type of pets you give away? Are they pets I don't know 🤣

Exactly CandidaAlbicans2. I find the mindset Of OP and some others on this thread really quite disturbing, and am fearful of how their kids will turn out with them as their role models.

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 19:04

@1940s 🙌🏻

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 19:05

Oh my stars 😂😂😂

Peasbewithyou · 08/07/2020 19:07

Maybe see if you can pass them on to someone?

We had sea monkeys, I was the only one who actually remembered to feed them. Actually grew quite attached to them and was wondering how I would feed them when their food ran out.

Anyway, then DS knocked them over and I couldn’t save them. I actually cried watching their poor little twitching bodies. (It was a particularly emotional week of lockdown).

SueEllenMishke · 08/07/2020 19:08

How much love an attention can you really give a sea monkey?

SueEllenMishke · 08/07/2020 19:11

It's quite worrying that people believe the sea monkeys are swimming around thinking about their predicament.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/07/2020 19:12

Well, that depends on how you like to showcase your virtuous nature SueEllenMishke. Personally, I think anything less than reading to them before bed is neglect.

Disappointed to see yet more posts finding this thread hilarious.
It’s just awful.

They are small and ugly yes but they are still living creatures at the end of the day and deserve to be treated with kindness.

The comparisons with nits are ridiculous, headlice are a health risk so obviously people will seek to kill them when discovered.
A creature that is killed because it actively causes harm is very different to actively going out and buying a creature/being gifted them then deciding that actually you don’t like it very much so killing it.

Yes it is true they are used as live fish food and it is true they are bottom of the food chain.
However.
I don’t imagine many people would find it acceptable to buy a box of fancy mice from the pet shop and feed them to the cat despite cats naturally eating mice.

Nor do I think most people would be comfortable giving dogs live rabbits yet left to their own devices a large proportion of dogs will chase and kill and eat rabbits.

The majority of snakes are fed dead rodents, not live.

Unlike some reptiles, the vast, vast majority of fish will happily eat flake/pellets/frozen live food so I don’t think it terribly ethical to feed them live brine shrimp, daphnia etc.

It seems to me that the fact they are small, incredibly ugly, dont require significant financial outlay, don’t really ‘bond’ with you or do anything interesting like say a cat or dog makes them worthless in the eyes of many people.

And I think that’s a really awful, cruel and callous attitude to have.

Fundamentally, when taking on pets, your responsibility is to meet their needs - that's how you show 'love' to any animal.

SueEllenMishke · 08/07/2020 19:16

They were in a room with a TV does that count??

We treated it as a lesson on the food chain ( he also got to feed a mouse to a snake the same week) so although we might be callous at least it was educational.

PurpleButterflyAway · 08/07/2020 19:16

But irrelevant but how do you make them come alive?!? Kids got some for Xmas and they’d never hatch!

Zippy1510 · 08/07/2020 19:17

For all those fretting about destroying a living creature. You kill bacteria every time you wash your hands? Does that bring a tear to your eye? Or do we need to be thinking about multicellular living organisms rather than single? What about a fungus? A plant? Amoeba? What’s the determining characteristic here?

SuperMoonIsKeepingMeUpToo · 08/07/2020 19:17

Aren't fish flakes made from dried bits of poultry and shrimp, etc?

gotothecooler · 08/07/2020 19:17

Ooo this is one of my favourite threads ever.

Why the fuck would you feed a fucking pet to other fish?

I like this comment the best Grin

Honestly, the frothing GrinGrinGrin

SueEllenMishke · 08/07/2020 19:17

frosted people buy mice from the pet shop to feed their snakes ..

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 19:18

They aren’t worthless but they are not sentient, unless you are a vegan, actual sentient animals die for your consumption in a horrendous fashion. I find it interesting that the sympathies mainly lie with dogs and cats, not cows and sheep for example.

Disappointed to see yet more posts finding this thread hilarious.

I will survive your disappointment GrinGrinGrin

BluebellForest836 · 08/07/2020 19:18

Just chuck them in the bin in a bag. They are ugly and the reason Iv never bought any for my kids.

Pelleas · 08/07/2020 19:18

What’s the determining characteristic here?

The determining characteristic is whether you welcomed it into your home.

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 19:19

@SueEllenMishke 🤣🤣🤣

BluebellForest836 · 08/07/2020 19:19

Some of the comments are bat shit on this thread 😂

BigBadVoodooHat · 08/07/2020 19:20

Seems like there's lots of posters on here who would gladly take them off your hands to give them the love, attention and respect that deserve OP, problem solved!

But how would the OP get them into an envelope to post them on? Confused

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 19:21

Do you know anyone going to the seaside that could tip them in the sea for you and give them the life they deserve..

frostedviolets · 08/07/2020 19:22

people buy mice from the pet shop to feed their snakes

Yeah, in the freezer section, very much dead!
Most people don’t feed live mice.

BigBadVoodooHat · 08/07/2020 19:22

Indeed. A generation of sociopathic serial killers is the only logical outcome Angry
