Is it cruel to throw sea monkeys away?

MIL got the the kids sea monkeys for Xmas I've only been the one bothered about them. They freak me out more than anything and can't bare the thought of bringing them to the new house.

Are these the type of pets you give away? Are they pets I don't know 🤣

I see this the same as using a fly spray

I clicked on this thread with high hopes, and was not disappointed.

Could we have a picture of said sea monkeys OP?!

SueEllenMishke · 08/07/2020 18:49

Dylan it's called the food chain. 🙄

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 18:49

I’m having flashbacks to getting abuse on mumsnet for letting my kids have a piñata, apparently it’s tantamount to telling them it’s ok to beat animals to death..

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 08/07/2020 18:50

Eurgh , one thing I do not miss is Sea Monkeys .

But my DS was given Triopts for his birthday I dutifully went off and bought the correct water (still, bottled was recommended)

They hatched , ate , grew ..........turned the water green so we couldn't see them . They shed their skins , you see their little coats floating about and you siphon them off .

We changed the water , gave them a bigger space . We had three .
Then there were two . Couldn't find the other one .

Then one of the remainers was swimming about with body of the other one in its mouth

So there was 1....which died .

No more Triopts . No sea monkeys

Nottherealslimshady · 08/07/2020 18:50

You shouldn't be able to buy them as toys, its terrible. They have a short lifespan, cant you just look after them till they die? Or give them to MIL to look after.

MrsGrindah · 08/07/2020 18:53

I have no idea what you are all talking about and now I’m too scared to Google.

JRUIN · 08/07/2020 18:53

If you want to teach your kids that pets are just throwaway toys, chuck them in the garbage but if you want them to respect living creatures carry on looking after them until they die a natural death or give them to someone else to take care of.

CandidaAlbicans2 · 08/07/2020 18:53

The "throw it away/who gives a shit because their ugly/they're cheap so who cares/it's just a..." type comments I find sad. To me it doesn't matter how cheap/small/ugly etc an animal is it's still a living creature and deserves to be treated humanely. And before anyone asks, no, I don't kill ants or flies, I have a "if you kill it you eat it" philosophy, with the exception of parasites, eg intestinal worms, bed bugs, nits, fleas, which harm us. Otherwise be respectful to animals and don't cause unnecessary suffering.

Mistymonday · 08/07/2020 18:54

How vile some people are towards living creatures that feel pain. Not all of us kill ants, flies etc. Some of us respect life. God, it us depressing how callous some people are and what are you all teaching your children. How sad.

romeolovedjulliet · 08/07/2020 18:55

this is ahorrible thread and certainly haven't read the full thing

Brabarella · 08/07/2020 18:56

Am I the only one who likes sea monkeys ? I bought them for my son but he’s not interested, I think they’re great and would not throw them away!

CandidaAlbicans2 · 08/07/2020 18:57

If you want to teach your kids that pets are just throwaway toys, chuck them in the garbage but if you want them to respect living creatures carry on looking after them until they die a natural death or give them to someone else to take care of

Exactly, JRUIN, it's the principle and the message it's giving to children.

Join the dots, why do so many animals get abused and/or abandoned in Britain? Maybe something to do with mindsets like "Oh, it [goldfish, hamster, rabbit, guinea pig, etc] only cost XX just chuck it out and get another"

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 18:57

If they exist in a state of suspended animation until the are put in the correctly treated water do they return to that state once removed from water 🤔

Ohtherewearethen · 08/07/2020 18:59

Seems like there's lots of posters on here who would gladly take them off your hands to give them the love, attention and respect that deserve OP, problem solved!

Saucery · 08/07/2020 19:01

Sea Monkeys went to Space !!! Shock

Lockheart · 08/07/2020 19:01

I'd just like to point out that feeding brine shrimp to your fish is a common practice in those who have aquariums, and most aquatic supply shops will sell brine shrimp kits specifically for this purpose.

Most fish shops will also sell them much cheaper than the "toy" kits you buy for children.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/07/2020 19:01

Love and attention? GrinGrin

Thelnebriati · 08/07/2020 19:01

MrsGrindah Its a type of shrimp that looks like a head louse misold as a pet, because some grifters will flog any old tat to kids.
They are so tiny they put a magnifying glass in the £8 plastic ''tank'' (its a beaker) so you can see what you wasted your money on.

billydilly · 08/07/2020 19:02

I buy packs of 'sea monkeys' aka brine shrimp every week for my fish; it's their natural diet. Every other fish-keeper I know does the same. Proper psychos, the lot of us.

1940s · 08/07/2020 19:02

As a vegan I will throw my two pence in... I don't personally see them as kittens or puppies...

I couldn't quite just flush them away personally as I'm made of soft stuff. But I'd use this absolutely as a lesson to your children who I presume wanted them / were excited about them once and ensure they clean them / maintain / keep them in their room. If they don't want to I'd put on quite a show about rehoming them so they learn about pet responsibility

PablosHoney · 08/07/2020 19:03

Love and attention for non sentient shrimp 🦐

bemusedmoose · 08/07/2020 19:03

extremely cruel! Just because they are weird and tiny doesnt mean they dont suffer if you dont look after them. But then i dont kill spiders or anything either.

Poor things didnt ask to be stuck in a jar for entertainment. You wouldnt like it if you were just going about your daily tasks and some giant decided it didnt like the look of you and chucked you away to die.

Never flush aquatic stock, not even dead. It can introduce disease to water ways as well as causing problems with invasive species (im talking live ones) as well as causing suffering to the animals.

The way to euthanise aquatic creatures would be a drop of clove oil as a sedative then neat alcohol or blunt force trauma. I keep fish and that is the recommend humane way to end suffering. Fish keepers also feed them to their pets.
