Is it cruel to throw sea monkeys away?

MIL got the the kids sea monkeys for Xmas I've only been the one bothered about them. They freak me out more than anything and can't bare the thought of bringing them to the new house.

Are these the type of pets you give away? Are they pets I don't know 🤣

@Cadent I don't think you get the idea of the biscuit. But I'm glad to have offered you some amusement. It's good to giggle. Especially when threadworm comes up.

temproasted · 08/07/2020 23:18

Yes but do you think Sea Monkeys are Monkeys (SMAM) Grin

Therarestone · 08/07/2020 23:18

Ours are nearly a year old, I'm sure they reproduce?

lemondrizzlehedgehog · 08/07/2020 23:19

@FourTeaFallOut

Bob on holiday
No offence Bob, But Simon the blue eyed Stickleback from Springwatch 2016 was more my type Grin
SirSamuelVimesBlackboardMonito · 08/07/2020 23:19

This is the best thread of 2020.

Limeavocado · 08/07/2020 23:33

@temproasted my teeny tiny brain led me to wondering whether they were related in some way to be called that and I spent the first few days of my daughter having a kit being terrified that they'd be able to climb out and roam the house, miniscule primate-like creatures gaily swinging around. I foolishly mentioned my fear to her and it resulted in a most disappointed 9 year old indeed once their physical, mental and emotional limitations were evident...

Not that I'm invalidating their worth of course.

Lightofthephoenix · 08/07/2020 23:36

I'm another in the cant get them to hatch camp

StrawberryCloud · 08/07/2020 23:39

Sea Monkeys are for life, not just for Christmas.

goose1964 · 08/07/2020 23:39

We had these years ago and my animal loving son treated then really well and they lasted for ages as they were breeding. I think it was about 2years before they all died, probably too small a gene pool. You can't just throw them out, I think they're really interesting.

Alongcameacat · 08/07/2020 23:42

We had them and the tank was so filthy. Presumably they died from lack of oxygen (or my child over feeding them). Ours lived about four months. I flushed them.

Legoandloldolls · 08/07/2020 23:44

This thread is insane. The things people can get incandescent over is mind boggling. Where does the spare energy come from?

Has anyone called 101 yet?

TitsInAbsentia · 08/07/2020 23:44

#shrimplivesmatter

Fancy mice

Sea monkey snuff movies

But most of all a good helping of clove flavoured vodka

I am totally checking back here tomorrow 😂

Iggi999 · 08/07/2020 23:47

I was fed up with ours after a while and they are not very satisfactory pets but I still cried when I found they had accidentally been knocked over one day. Sad
Of course it's not ok to flush them, you hatched them you owe them.

ZoeCM · 08/07/2020 23:50

@JRUIN, I think the reason people asked if you eat meat is that the meat/egg/dairy industry makes the swift killing of a few brine shrimp look like an episode of In the Night Garden. I'm not vegan or even vegetarian, but I'm well aware that there's a lot of cruelty involved in getting animal products to my plate. Cows, pigs, poultry etc. are much more capable of feeling pain and emotion than brine shrimp are. If you eat animal products (or feed them to your children), then calling posters "disturbing" and saying you're fearful for how their kids will turn out if their parents kill brine shrimp is complete hypocrisy.

For the record, I don't think the OP should just throw away the shrimp, and I also don't think they should be sold as toys.

MooneyBadger · 08/07/2020 23:55

Only on MN could you find a thread featuring sea monkeys, pinatas, Dominic Cummings, and committing 'shrimpicide' with clove oil and tiny hammers.

Lightofthephoenix · 08/07/2020 23:59

Just found this review on the sea monkeys via Amazon.

Iggi999 · 09/07/2020 00:03

I always thought that the feeding of live mice to reptiles was illegal in the uk, is that not the case? A number of people on the thread have mentioned doing this.
I'm pretty sure pets at home wouldn't sell you any if you said that's what you were going to do!

Iggi999 · 09/07/2020 00:04

Did you know you can take them out and about with you?

Too small a gene pool?? You mean they (gasps and clutches pearls) committed INCEST???? Shock
WheresMyOldLifeGone · 09/07/2020 00:08

I had sea monkeys as a kid - I cared for them really well and looked after them....until my dog drunk them.

I felt awful as I wouldnt/couldn't harm anything (though I'm guessing the dog didn't plan the mass murder!)

Lorddenning1 · 09/07/2020 00:09

I'm shaking with rage over here

Be fair...In the Night Garden is pretty bloody terrifying. Those pontypines (shudders and hides under duvet)

@TitsInAbsentia clove vodka? am so there!

Has anyone called 101 yet? I can't. 101 banned my number after I called them too many times complaining about an elderly Korean lady camping out in my garden, whilst the neighbours were having sex in my hedge, and also for complaining about Waitrose running out of naice ham. All this whilst simultaneously screaming at Michelangelo whilst on a trip to the sistine chapel.
ScrambledSmegs · 09/07/2020 00:14

@lemondrizzlehedgehog don't worry, they reproduce asexually and have no need of a bigger gene pool. No incest at all. In fact, the only reason for the extremely rare male sea monkeys ('Bob') to exist seems to be to pass on the asexual reproductive capabilities to other populations that don't already have it.

Notfeelinggreattoday · 09/07/2020 00:15

I think my kids were given something like this years ago i didnt even put them in the water as didnt realise they were real ( alive ) i thought was a gimmick like grow your own dinosour type toy - threw them away , feel guilty now
