Making the wearing of a mask manditory

weepingwillow22 · 08/07/2020 13:49

Has anyone else noticed the worldometer projections for UK deaths have changed significantly since the relaxation of restrictions last week?
covid19.healthdata.org/united-kingdom

The deaths are now predicted to be back up to 800 a day by november with a second peak in cases surpassing the first one.

The graphs do however show that this can be avoided if mask wearing is made compulsory.

AIBU to think that the wearing of a mask or visor (excepting those eho cannot wear them for medical conditions) should be made manditory in all indoor public places in order to avoid this second peak.

If cases rise again to the extent projected here another national lockdown will be required resulting in more job losses, school closures and unnecessary deaths.

Surely the wearing of a mask is a small price to pay to avoid a second peak particularly as the scientific evidence now points to it being highly effective in preventing asymptomatic spread.

no point in being mandatory when people are printing off exemption cards. an exemption should be through the doctors only.

HeIenaDove · 08/07/2020 15:19

Would this be the same GPs who still arent fully operational despite hairdressers being open!

HeIenaDove · 08/07/2020 15:25

Prove you are disabled enough for PIP

Prove you are disabled enough to get food delivered.
Prove you are disabled enough so you dont have to risk your own health in a mask. A sinister hat trick.

Mumsnets Unholy Trinity.

As for a badge? Hasnt history been here before.

araiwa · 08/07/2020 15:28

No exemptions

Allowing someone to spread a fatal disease is not a reasonable adjustment

HamishDent · 08/07/2020 15:30

Masks will be mandatory in Scotland in shops from 10th July. When I was in the supermarket yesterday I noticed far more people were already wearing them. Whilst I really hate wearing one, I do think making it mandatory does make it easier for everyone. There’s no doubt as to what’s expected and it’s less embarrassing as you’re following the rules.

Gibble1 · 08/07/2020 15:30

I very much doubt that people will wear them. They’re mandatory for everyone inside hospitals- yet staff members freely tell other staff members to fuck off when they are pulled up on it.

HeIenaDove · 08/07/2020 15:30

There used to be a green card years ago. Now others want a version of it brought back but not as a favour for disabled/ill people..............oh no. But so they can prove themselves to nosy vindictive busybodies.

HeIenaDove · 08/07/2020 15:32

ariawa you are a disabilist.

araiwa · 08/07/2020 15:33

No im not

Im anti deadly diseaseist

If we want to have some sort of reasonable life, work, shopping, eating out, day trips, socialising, I think it's the only way to go to keep numbers own. I can wear a shield at work, I accidently sneezed in it the other day before I could get a tissue, and I couldn't believe how many water droplets I could see on the inside.

TheTrollFairy · 08/07/2020 15:39

I think they should be mandatory and I think I would personally feel more comfortable going in a shop if they are worn.
I get the argument that people haven’t for months so it’s too little to late but it should be we haven’t until now let’s use what we have learnt, wear the masks even if it only reduces the risk slightly as even a slight reduction in risk could save 1000s of lives.
The argument of too little to late or we haven’t used them in the last few months is similar I suppose to saying that people who previously cut up asbestos sheets without PPE should continue even though we now know how harmful it is (I know it’s different circumstances but essentially it’s using the past to plan how we should move forwards)

Northernsoullover · 08/07/2020 15:45

People who are sick of people 'fiddling with their masks' I'm sick of having to explain to people like you that fiddling with your mask doesn't really matter. You aren't performing surgery. You wear them as a line of defence against particle transmission. Its not perfect. Perhaps people could be advised about correct use instead of being sneered at by superior beings?
They are hot and uncomfortable. You also get used to them. I couldn't stand them at first. Now I hardly notice I'm wearing one.

Lindy2 · 08/07/2020 15:50

I wear a mask in shops but I feel a bit self conscious. I nag DH to wear his.

Both of us would be very relieved if wearing masks in indoor places like shops was made compulsory. It would soon become the norm and people would no longer be self conscious. It would also, rather importantly, save lives.

Clearyweary · 08/07/2020 15:53

I think they should be mandatory for everybody, regardless of medical conditions.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 08/07/2020 15:54

I forced myself to wear one for 10 minutes earlier. I dug my nails into my hand so hard I made myself bleed. I think the "getting used to them" very much depends on why someone isn't keen. Very much for me, not going anywhere that requires one (including the doctors) will be far easier than attempting to acclimatise. I do have a doctor's letter but I've seen so many people including our local minister go full bore on the subject with no exemptions I'd rather just avoid. It will no doubt be better for our bank account too. Dh doing the shopping has reduced our spending dramatically as he misses out all the "extras".

DesmondTheMoonbear · 08/07/2020 15:54

Yes, fuck those pesky disabled people. Who wants to see them out in public anyway?

BiBabbles · 08/07/2020 15:55

No exceptions. Allowing someone to spread a fatal disease is not a reasonable adjustment

That would mean single parents with infants could not leave their house. Those under 2 are specifically listed in all the literature as a group that shouldn't wear any face coverings, as is anyone who cannot remove them on their own -- because it's far more likely to kill them than to protect anyone.

I think if it went from masks to masks & visors/face shields for most non-medical situations (there isn't the evidence yet for face shield use alone in medical ones, most of it is them together) would encourage wider use and, with some basic risk assessment that like vaccines, if the majority do it then those who can't will be protected, then I think be sensible if it was made mandatory. Yeah, some people will take the piss (either in not wearing or at shouting at people to wear them) and there needs to be some clarity on dealing with them for hours at a time, but it could be reasonable with the other adjustments like distancing and remaining home more than pre-lockdown.

DesmondTheMoonbear · 08/07/2020 15:56

The ignorance and attitude on MN towards people with disabilities and/or health conditions is despicable. It shouldn't be tolerated but it is.

HamishDent · 08/07/2020 15:58

Of course there are groups who can’t wear them (the very young and those with certain medical conditions) and that’s ok. The idea is to reduce the risk, not eliminate it. If everyone who can wear a mask does, then we will hopefully reduce the risk of the virus spreading. It’s similar to vaccinations where not everyone can be vaccinated but are afforded some protection those around them who have.

Haenow · 08/07/2020 16:01

@araiwa

Do you know anyone with significant lung disease such as; COPD? My friend’s oxygen saturation’s drop to 80% in a mask. She tried to wear one but collapsed in the waiting room and ended up in hospital. Her lung disease isn’t very severe but it’s enough!

Haenow · 08/07/2020 16:02

I know. Spiteful excuse for humans. Fortunately, most people understand. I do.

@Clearyweary

Do you have lung disease? You don’t know what you’re talking about! It can be very dangerous for some people.

feetfreckles · 08/07/2020 16:02

The trouble is that people who fiddle with masks, take them down to talk etc probably do more harm than good

Masks help if used correctly. It seems one of the reasons why the evidence is sometimes ambiguous is that they make things worse if used incorrectly

narrowboatgirl · 08/07/2020 16:03

Most people with disabilities are far more sensitive than the average person to the risks of Covid, and are extra careful to take precautions to ameliorate risk to themselves or others. Eg avoiding unnecessary trips out of the house, and practicing scrupulous social distancing and hygiene. A person doing all that does not realistically pose much risk to you even if they are not wearing a mask. A person wearing a mask incorrectly (eg not changing it frequently enough) while ignoring all the other advice poses far more threat to you.

The problem is people have made masks into some kind of magical talisman where you can do whatever you like just with a bit of cotton wrapped around your face you’re magically immune, but if you remove your mask you’re condemning everyone within a mile of you to certain death. It’s sheer ignorance.
