Making the wearing of a mask manditory

Has anyone else noticed the worldometer projections for UK deaths have changed significantly since the relaxation of restrictions last week?
covid19.healthdata.org/united-kingdom

The deaths are now predicted to be back up to 800 a day by november with a second peak in cases surpassing the first one.

The graphs do however show that this can be avoided if mask wearing is made compulsory.

AIBU to think that the wearing of a mask or visor (excepting those eho cannot wear them for medical conditions) should be made manditory in all indoor public places in order to avoid this second peak.

If cases rise again to the extent projected here another national lockdown will be required resulting in more job losses, school closures and unnecessary deaths.

Surely the wearing of a mask is a small price to pay to avoid a second peak particularly as the scientific evidence now points to it being highly effective in preventing asymptomatic spread.

The government have a choice

Learn from how other countries have managed COVID far more successfully (as they learnt from SARS (Hong Kong in particular)

Or just bumble along listening to all the many moaning that they don’t like life being so restricted

One will most certainly result (and has) in far more people being seriously ill and deaths

HeIenaDove · 08/07/2020 23:19

Agree Enthusiasm So i look forward to seeing the vending machines with cold face masks popping up soon.

BuzzButterfly7 · 08/07/2020 23:30

I don't like masks they make me feel claustrophobic

Hearwego · 08/07/2020 23:39

None of what the government does or has done has been consistent. Go to work, don’t go to work! Wear a mask, don’t wear a mask!
Buses can only let 8-10 people on, but an EasyJet flight can be pact full and take 3-4 hours to get somewhere.People on buses are only on for a short while.
Then of course, you can go in a pub or restaurant, and not wear a mask for probably a few hours. Yet again, on public transport you do. Makes little sense.
Then we were told that face coverings offer little protection.
We’re now being told in our town centre to wear a face covering. I’m not sure if it’s compulsory yet.
I’m lost and confused with everything we’re being told to do. Or not do.
I think the high street will die a quicker death if this becomes compulsory.
God help us...

marypoppinsreturns · 08/07/2020 23:41

I'm in Scotland and not looking forward to them being compulsory in shops from Friday. I will wear one as I have to but have a five year old child who is refusing to even try one on, although we've tried to make it sound fun and said it can be decorated with stickers and drawings, or we will source a superhero one. Im not having a hysterical and distressed child who doesn't really understand, so he won't be going to any shops. He's only been in a couple since March so we should manage.

TheMurk · 09/07/2020 00:05

I just think it’s incredible how you can go to the pub in Scotland no mask, go to a huge, empty shop MASK!

But now we have the beady eyed mask wearers stalking the streets and driving their cars shooting daggers at anyone not wearing one. So I guess “cultural mask wearing” will become a thing, just like we’ve had social distancing, new normal and various other catchy new phrases thrust on us.

HeIenaDove · 09/07/2020 00:11

@TheMurk its to enable the pissheads to go to the pub. Because of the money they spend due to the British drinking culture. They come first , last and in between.

Thats why we are being "advised" to wear masks now.

HeIenaDove · 09/07/2020 00:21

Just came into my fb feed.

So I ventured out today to see how other cafes and Wetherspoons were implementing the new social distancing rules.
Wetherspoons 🤢🤮🤢🤢🤮
This is somewhere I will not be venturing again for a long long time. For a start I walked straight in and sat st a table. There is a one way in and one way out in operation but this was a free for all. The coffee machine touch screen was being used by everyone and never sanatised while I was there it was unclean and no way was this germ free. Then my cutlery came unwrapped and in the servers hand who had no gloves of mask on. Also I though people were suppose to stay seated! They were walking everywhere and with no regards to social distancing. Also servers were cleaning dirty plates into what looked like a hostess trolly, one employee was using his hand to remove food from a plate with glove but then after doing this went and picked a tray of drinks up after wiping his hands down his trousers🤮. I then called a member of staff over and asked what there track and trace and i got told its optional to fill out your details as you leave. I watched and while I was there out of around 50 people one person filled the form out using the same pen thats been used by other people not sure thats good practice and how is track and trace going to work. This virus will spread for sure.
I also went to another chained cafe and there was no sanitizer on entry, I was not asked for my details and also all condiments we accessed by all customers! God help us all. After what I saw today in Chelmsford it will be a mirical if we don't have another spike in the virus.

Then stay indoors and let the rest of us get back to normal
EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/07/2020 07:46

What normal EnlightenedOwl

We all need to be more responsible and the government needs to lead us on this

Life isn’t going to be normal for some time that we have to accept its not for ever

BravoSalut · 09/07/2020 07:53

Scotland is making the wearing of masks indoor compulsory from this Friday. I think the rest of the UK should folloW their example.

I totally agree. It would be so much easier to know it is mandatory and we all just get on with it.

labyrinthloafer · 09/07/2020 07:53

@EnlightenedOwl you repeatedly talk about letting 'the rest of us' get back to normal.

I don't think you understand - if 50% of usual footfall is missing, you won't get back to anything. You'll get business closures and shop vacancies etc.

We need a national plan, a competent government and a PM who both cares and is up to it. We currently have not be of those things.

This 'its just a virus' stuff is not reflective of where we are. I'm sorry if you are finding it hard to get your head around it all, but denial won't get us anywhere.

We have to get a sensible plan.

PositivelyPrecious · 09/07/2020 07:55

I do judge others who don’t wear masks in general as it’s supposed to be you wear it to protect others. I highly doubt the 70 or so people who weren’t wearing them in my local shopping centre the other day are asmathic. Also my brother is severely asmathic and still manages to wear his for a quick shop. It’s horrible wearing them and once I had to literally sprint for the exit as I felt I couldn’t breathe but if it prevents me spreading it to someone else then it has to be done.

I’d like to see a system where those monitoring who goes in/out also give masks to people on way in and they must be worn or you will be asked to leave. Anyone with a breathing issue would have a long history of it with their doctor so doctor could easily email/post them a letter explaining they are exempt so then they go on their way. I don’t like them/ they are uncomfortable is not an excuse. This graphic clearly explains their importance.

I don’t wear masks outside as there’s no need. But it’s pretty simple to pop it ok before going in the car then home and into a tub of Milton on the sideboard to bleach before next wear.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 09/07/2020 07:55

It’s a virus that has overwhelmed every public health system in every country apart from those that went on a very strict lock down very very quickly and have continued with strict restrictions

And all economies have been impacted because of restrictions out on place to keep people safe

But this of course you know

UmbrellaHat · 09/07/2020 08:00

The graphs do however show that this can be avoided if mask wearing is made compulsory.
Graphs cannot 'show' that!
Assumptions can be modelled and represented graphically but that is not evidence, merely guesswork.

loulouljh · 09/07/2020 08:07

I imagine the footfall in clothes shops etc will be even less if mask wearing is compulsory.

I am in Scotland . Young children do not have to wear face coverings in shops .

ICouldBeTheOne · 09/07/2020 08:27

@EnthusiasmIsDisturbed It didn't, and hasn't overwhelmed the NHS.

SamSeabornforPresident · 09/07/2020 09:08

@Oldbutstillgotit I thought in Scotland masks were compulsory for those 5 and over? I could be wrong though. I'm glad mine are much younger than that.

I've not worn one yet but will from tomorrow on the (increasingly) rare occasions I go to the shops. It does seem a little pointless though, with the very low infections levels. The chances of meeting an infectious person are very very slim. And as a couple of pps have said, where does it end? When are the infection levels going to be low enough that we can stop wearing them? Do we have to wait for a vaccine?

Hearwego · 09/07/2020 09:32

Let’s face it, wearing a covering is going to be compulsory soon isn’t it?..

hoorayforharoldlloyd · 09/07/2020 09:42

I wear them in the supermarket after seeing a sign in the coop asking nicely if we could to support their staff, which seems fair. Plus our nursery might have to shut again due to suspected case and it's getting me down thinking we might have to isolate again so maybe these kinds of things could help.

UmbrellaHat · 09/07/2020 09:50

It would be totally counterproductive as fewer people would go out, so there would be no economic recovery and the effects would be devastating. 34 case in a city of 9 million. Utter lunacy and overreaction.

Evelefteden · 09/07/2020 09:54

Making face masks compulsory now is like turning up late for a party when every one was leaving.

At one point 5000 a day were being diagnosed officially with the virus. We know how hard it was to be even given a test. Id bet money my father had it ( very poorly scan on lungs doctor said it was likely it was COVID, treated him for pneumonia and is still feeling the effects months later and the Doctor STILL wouldn’t test him)

I think back then it’s more likely that 5000 a day ‘official’ number was way higher more like 7000 a day infection rate.

We have seen no spikes with riots, crowded beaches, shops being open the entire time, schools being open through out, raves, VE Day celebrations.

I think the majority of us have already had it.

Out of 66 MILLON people in this country there are 1821 people that are in hospital WITH Covid. That’s a 71.5% REDUCTION on the last six weeks.

It’s understandable that people are petrified to go out in case they get the plague due to media slant on it but there are many other reliable science sources you can keep check off to show you where we are at rather than cherry picking the ones that feed your anxiety.
