To think that fish fingers do not go with pasta

Clearly not the biggest deal but I'd be interested to hear views! My OH cooked me fishfingers and pasta with sweetcorn the other day (yes a but bland but we were v. short on time and inspiration!). I micro waved myself a potato instead and put the pasta in the fridge for the next day's lunch. No arguments at all but I was surprised at the offering as I thought pasta kind of needs a sauce? he thought this was normal so I though I'd canvas some opinions!

YABU = fish fingers and pasta is a fine (if uninspired meal)
YANBU = it's a totally weird combination!

You could have sprinkled parmesan and lemon juice over the pasta, with a dab or two of melting butter for a 'sauce', and lemon juice over the fish fingers too.

The only thing that was out of place there was the sweetcorn imo. Frozen peas or beans would have been nicer, and could have been tossed with the pasta and lemon and cheese.

One of my DSs wouldn't eat potatoes until he was about 15. We often had/have pasta as a side dish instead. However I would usually cook it in chicken stock and add butter and pepper and maybe a bit tabasco or soy sauce or something to it to give it some flavour.

We'd happily eat it with fish fingers and corn Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/07/2020 23:57

You can't have beans with pasta! That would be like your egg touching the beans on a cooked breakfast.

Quartz2208 · 06/07/2020 23:59

Hundredacre every now and then when need a quick and easy lunch we have a fish finger sandwich

and I prefer it to fish and chips/mashed potato as there is more crispy bits

mathanxiety · 07/07/2020 00:01

That should be me and dh

I could be wrong, but shouldn’t it be DH and I?
I’ll leave now

No, it's 'DH and me'. If it works for each of the parties alone then you use it when the parties are in the same sentence.

You say, 'That should be me', not, 'That should be I'.

So, 'That should be me and DH', is correct and 'I' is wrong in that sentence.

Me is the objective case pronoun. It follows a verb or a preposition.

I really need to know what possible accoutrements were available. I know it was just before shopping, but any tartar sauce in the house? Mayo? Sweet chilli? Plain yoghurt? That weird yoghurt and mint sauce that I'm addicted to on fries ? Butter? Ketchup? Onion marmalade, even. Soft cheese? Pesto?

Any of those, or possibly a mixture of them and I would chop the fish fingers into chunky cubes and mix with the pasta and sweetcorn and happily devour Grin

Fish fingers, chips, and a whole tin of cheapest mushy peas with poshest mint sauce mixed in, is the correct way, BTW. With lashings of tartare sauce on the fish, and a splodge of ketchup for dunking chips in. Salt and vinegar, obviously.

Lozz22 · 07/07/2020 00:07

I would eat it. Then again for me when money is tight before pay day I often have mis matched foods. Actually quite fancy chopped cold fishfingers and sweetcorn mixed together with cold pasta and mayonnaise now

@UnderTheSleepingBaby

In my daughter's opinion, pasta goes with everything. She is however, 2 years old. I'm with you OP (although wouldn't choose fish fingers, or anything breaded or battered)
I'm with your daughter. Pasta goes with everything.

Can I just check if this fish finger eating by adults is happening on a regular basis as a normal meal, or a very random one off for some reason?

Is there some reason why people over 18 years of age shouldn't eat fish fingers? I have them approximately once a month and in all my 43 years, I've never heard of any official guidelines suggesting they are to be eaten by minors only.

Thanks guys! To answer a few questions. He is English. We both like fish fingers every now and then and they are a bit of a go to when funds are running low - that and bean casserole but that takes some time to make. There was ketchup available and pesto if I hunted in the cupboards. No other sauces.

I'm horrified at the idea of putting mayo on hot pasta though I'm a fussy bugger and detest pasta salads - cold pasta has the consistency of slugs IMHO.

@ViciousJackdaw Grin couldn't put it better myself!

I hadn't eaten then for donkey's years, then I saw them in the shop one day and I eat them every now and again. Why is that so hard to believe Confused

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 07/07/2020 00:28

ketchup?

not a combination i'd choose

SickOfNorthernExile · 07/07/2020 00:29

I give DS fish fingers with a sort of basic mac and cheese (pasta, cream cheese, cheddar and sweetcorn) and peas as a midweek meal.
He loves it!

HundredAcre · 07/07/2020 00:34

@mathanxiety amazing, I stand corrected!!! 😂

AdaColeman · 07/07/2020 00:38

You could have added butter & marmite to the pasta for a sauce, a Nigella favourite.
Not sure about the fish fingers, I’d never heard of fish finger sandwiches until I joined MN.

HundredAcre · 07/07/2020 00:39

Actually now I read your post more thoroughly rather than being blinded by your expertise and big words far behind what I’m capable of, the original sentence was:

Btw to those who don't think grown adults eat fish fingers - one year dh had ff chips and beans for our Christmas dinner

What I quoted was the correction which I was correcting. Am I still wrong?

HundredAcre · 07/07/2020 00:40

Sorry that was to @mathanxiety

AhBallix · 07/07/2020 00:42

My eldest occasionally asks for plain pasta and chicken nuggets/fish fingers. I usually give him a bit of salad as well. He's not crazy about potatoes in any shape or style, although he does valiantly chew his way through them, bless him.

As for posters being shocked at adults eating fish fingers, there's no age limit stipulated on the box. They're just breaded fish. The word 'finger' isn't an attempt to appeal to children's ghoulish love of severed body parts. It's just a shape. I make my own sometimes, although they're a bit misshapen - like fingers trapped in a mangle.

ToBBQorNotToBBQ · 07/07/2020 00:42

Disgusting. Is this his way of never having to cook again?

SionnachRua · 07/07/2020 00:44

I'd have eaten that when I was about 8. Not now though, I agree with you OP that there's just something...odd about pasta and fish fingers. Potato and fish fingers all the way.

God I haven't had a fish finger in years. I feel like when I try them again I'll be bitterly disappointed!

SionnachGlic · 07/07/2020 00:50

I'd eat it without complaint if I was hungry but I wouldn't be putting it on the regular menu....it is an odd combination

SionnachRua · 07/07/2020 00:53

@SionnachGlic love the username Wink

notso · 07/07/2020 00:54

Plain pasta isn't something I'd ever serve with anything, I don't even like it when you bite a plain piece to test if it's cooked.

I love a fish finger sandwich but it's the kind of thing I'd eat on my own!

DS3 had pasta and fish fingers at his friends house. Even he found it odd, although he said he made it palatable with ketchup

DD once went to a friends house and had steak pie with rice which is a similar wtf combo to me.

Paintdry · 07/07/2020 00:59

I'm horrified at the idea of putting mayo on hot pasta
Peas mayo, bit of cheese mixed in and melted. Amazing stuff Grin
