Thought it was time for another try at recognising these images and catching some child rapists.

They specifically want to trace their origin (location/country). You can help by clicking on an object you recognise and providing Europol with the information you have on the object. This can be done anonymously.

The images are safe to click on (all identifying bits have been taken out), but still may be triggering for some.

To answer a couple of questions.

Europol is the European branch of Interpol - police across borders. Sort of like an international FBI.

These small images are cut outs from the background of images/videos including or related to child sexual abuse. That's why they are often blurry or pixelated. They are seized when somebody is caught or a website is exposed. Police/investigators look at the images not only to ascertain that the person caught is guilty of viewing indecent images of children, but also to attempt to identify the children and/or perpratrators in the images in order that the children can be helped if it is not too late, and the perpetrators can be found and brought to justice.

They share these pictures from images which they are really struggling to identify. They have several other avenues to explore which they will do first.

If it's found that a t-shirt is from (say) H&M which has branches all over the world, they would stop trying to use the t-shirt as a clue for location since it wouldn't be helpful. It might still be useful for example as a time stamp - if the t-shirt was made and distributed in 2003, then it's unlikely the picture is from the 1990s.

BertieBotts · 08/07/2020 13:19

And it would only ever be a clue anyway, since of course a t-shirt from any country could end up in any other. DS2 has some trousers which have no English labelling, only Polish. They are hand me down ones and I expect they were second or third hand when we got them. I've never been to Poland.

Ostanovka · 08/07/2020 14:04

The shorts with LUCK on - could that be the name of the cartoon character? The English word isn't something which would be used on clothing in English speaking countries imo.

CorianderLord · 08/07/2020 14:32

Really wish I hadn't clicked on that. Horrifying.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 08/07/2020 14:50

Flowers inthekitchensink, and thanks for all you've done.

Re the tall yellow aerosol, I had a look in the supermarket today and the closest thing I could see was Pledge. Lemon pledge?

BertieBotts · 08/07/2020 16:39

Luck is often a mistranslation of happiness, since the word root is similar and the words can be similar in many languages. More commonly lucky/happy are the pair which is mixed up but in Germanic languages for example "Glück" translated directly is luck, but the closer translation in terms of meaning is happiness.

I wonder if this is something MNHQ could get behind? They could make sure we're informed every time the list of items is updated.

You can just check in with the Europol Trace and Object site from time to time. That's what I do. Also, you can join Bellingcat. Those guys have done a lot of work on this. You can read about it on their site. It's incredibly encouraging! Read this. It's bloody amazing. www.bellingcat.com/tag/stopchildabuse/

BoreOfWhabylon · 08/07/2020 17:16

Thanks Vanguard

SlightyJaded · 08/07/2020 18:35

@TheVanguardSix I've just read how they identified the site in Cambodia - and were then able to narrow it down to the month and year. Absolutely incredible, diligent work.

It's encouraging to know that there are such skilled people analysing these images and committing hours and hours into such painstaking research.

TheVanguardSix · 08/07/2020 18:42

SlightlyJaded isn't it fantastic stuff? It really does blow my mind. I remember that Cambodia picture being up on Europol's site for ages. And when I came across the article on Bellingcat, I was just taken aback by the work those guys do. It's inspirational. It's also a bit of a remedy for the sadness I feel whenever I see the Trace an Object photos on the Europol site.

SlightyJaded · 08/07/2020 23:02

I'm definitely going to follow the Bellingcat site too now. Thanks for that.

VenusTiger · 10/05/2021 23:44

This really sets off my anxiety, but I looked - didn't recognise anything this time, but thank you OP for raising this, I had no idea it existed - I wonder if I'll be allowed to share the link on Twitter? I have a fair amount of followers so a good reach?

Don’t forget when staying in hotels there’s a site for you to upload pictures of your hotel room so if they see abuse taking place in hotel rooms tbey can use the database to try and identify it
