Where are those who predicted 18 months lockdown now

Firstly I realise that the lockdown in England is only being eases not ended. I am also aware that it is entirely possible there will be a second lockdown necessitated by a second spike. Finally, I am aware of and grateful for the sacrifices of those frontline workers, sad for those who have lost loved ones and both aware and grateful for the sacrifices of those who died in the 2 world wars and in other conflicts.

On 21st March on this website a thread entitled "How long are you expecting this to go on for?" was posted. Several posters speculated that "this" would last 18 months or longer and others also said there would likely be a war as well. I realise there has been terrible suffering and my mental health has been I impacted. However, rightly or wrongly, the lockdown is significantly eased and plans are being made for a near future which can in no way be described as lockdown. I wondered if any of those who predicted 18 months would like to comment here and perhaps admit that they were wrong. I'm afraid I still see their motivation as primarily to drag others down, so I'm not holding my breath, but neither am I prepared not to call them out. They've ruined MN, and they made an awful awful time worse.

I didn’t respond to any of those posts, but if I’d responded to “how long are you expecting ‘this’ to go on for?” then yes, I would have said about 18 months. That’s the best-case scenario time by which we might have widespread vaccination, and until then vigilance and restrictions will be necessary.

I never would have expected lockdown to last for 3 months! I was expecting that to be a lot shorter, as it has been in countries that locked down sooner and got infections under control quicker. Mind you, I wasn’t expecting schools to go back before September.

We’re a long way from ‘this’ being over. I can’t go to church (if I want to be able to sing). The music festival I was supposed to go to in May almost certainly won’t go ahead on its new date in September. Schools will not be back to normal even in September. I doubt we’ll be able to go to carol services this Christmas to be honest (not everyone will miss this but I really will!) I don’t know when we’ll be able to have a party without worrying about numbers, or hug friends.

Does that make me a Dementor? 🤷‍♀️

MadameMeursault · 06/07/2020 01:02

Why do you want people to admit they were wrong? They might not be wrong. This isn’t over yet. The number of new cases and number of deaths are going down, but really really slowly. Did you see those scenes outside pubs in London last night? Did you see the footage from Bournemouth beach?

This virus isn’t going to go away until we have a vaccine available to everyone, and 18 months from the start of all this is probably a reasonable estimate. We’ll be back in lockdown soon, mark my words. Best to go out and stock up on bog roll.

Some of these posters probably wanted to gain the kudos of bigging themselves up as having had both the insight to see things as they are and the gumption to say an unpalatable truth when in fact they have been disseminating fear and sadness at a time of total and near universal misery.
Hmm

Are you saying that people responded to a thread without considering the impact on you personally, and now you want them all to apologise?

Experts seem to agree the virus will become as common as flu/the common cold. This isn't the same as saying the lockdown will or should last forever.
Actually, it is exactly the same, unless you are ok with the prospect of a nightmare like the one in Italy, Spain or NYC, or the one currently facing the state of Texas.

Nobody yet knows how all of this will end up.
What we do know is that the virus has the capacity to overwhelm health services and kill people in numbers far greater than flu casualties. It can be transmitted like the flu but it's never going to be the flu.

Here in the States we eased lockdown way too early and now we’re in a real mess. I’m in one of the worst affected states and life is essentially on pause. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if we weren’t headed for war either, with the election speculation being as it is and a race war brewing. In my home we are firmly on the side of BLM but we definitely know people who disagree with the movement and support the republicans.

People who like to prove other people wrong, remember slights months later, want people to grovel about perceived slights, and 'call people out' are just as miserable as people who were all over the 18 month lockdown..

They both (and I mean you OP) need to channel Elsa and Let It Go.

AnneOfQueenSables · 06/07/2020 01:08

If they 'ruined' MN, why are you here? Because it seems like your agenda is to pretend lockdown is over. Otherwise your post makes no sense. You're asking posters to apologise for being wrong when no-one knows if they're wrong yet.

If we're getting wishes, I wish the cheeky and goady fuckers that have inundated MN would leave. Likewise the posters pretending lockdown is over and that everyone wants to go to the pub and go on holiday. In RL I don't know anyone who agrees with them.

mathanxiety · 06/07/2020 01:10

I am in a Blue state where masks are mandatory, and even here we are expecting a resurgence because people are idiots and businesses bleated really loudly at mayors to allow stupidly early reopening.

BLM2 · 06/07/2020 01:12

We’ll be back in lockdown soon, mark my words. Best to go out and stock up on bog roll

Does Covid give you the trots?

BLM2 · 06/07/2020 01:15

Well some people in RL clearly want & are doing just that or are the news reports pretend?

Jenasaurus · 06/07/2020 01:17

Does Covid give you the trots?

Well it can do apparently, its one of the symptoms :)
AnneOfQueenSables · 06/07/2020 01:17

Perhaps you should read my post again rather than responding to a spurious point I didn't make.

BLM2 · 06/07/2020 01:22

@Jenasaurus so how much bog roll do I need since I don't know when I will catch Covid but also want to limit unnecessary trips out?

BLM2 · 06/07/2020 01:26

@AnneOfQueenSables you seem really stressed out. Do you normally accuse posters of having agendas?

user1471439310 · 06/07/2020 01:27

I live in the US and the spike of cases after some states lowered restrictions is terrible. I truly believe we will have this virus at least till next spring and hopefully a vaccine. No one was wrong, the experts don't know everything about this virus and you expected random people to know.

Jenasaurus · 06/07/2020 03:58
@Jenasaurus so how much bog roll do I need since I don't know when I will catch Covid but also want to limit unnecessary trips out?
I estimate that 20 sheets is commonly used each time someone does a "number two", so a pack of 30 rolls would be enough for 637.5 "number two's depending on the number in your household and the severity of your pooping :)

Jenasaurus · 06/07/2020 03:59

But if in doubt you could use the toilet paper calculator below

Loveinatimeofcovid · 06/07/2020 04:34

But the U.K. is still very much in lockdown isn’t it? it’s just eased with a few localised strict lockdowns. I thought people were still expected to work from home unless they couldn’t etc.

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 06/07/2020 05:15

If people got it spectacularly wrong it doesn’t mean they’re spectacularly stupid. Everything we’ve experienced is unprecedented. FWIW I think some countries (like the UK and the US) will experience resurgence and others (like Australia) will be better at avoiding further spikes. But at what cost to the economy? I honestly don’t know what is the best option and I’m glad I’m not a decision maker.

Mimishimi · 06/07/2020 05:37

I think I was one of those people. I stand by it.

Newdaynewname1 · 06/07/2020 05:37

According to your logic, only people with magic crystal balls are allowed to post in online forums. Which means nobody.
you do realise that this is an approach utilised by for example north korea?
Forums are about opinions, not about THE TRUTH

022828MAN · 06/07/2020 05:38

So people were speculating... Someone was going to be right and someone was going to be wrong. It does sound like you're catastrophising.

maddiemookins16mum · 06/07/2020 05:39

YABU, this is nowhere near over.

chaoticisatroll55 · 06/07/2020 05:59

I don't think anyone did predict 18 months of actual lockdown did they? I didn't come across anyone saying that. Social distancing due to lack of vaccine, yes. They were right. We should be. However the Government wants herd immunity so we're not.

Jellybeansincognito · 06/07/2020 06:06

You can’t blame the opinions of random people on MN for your own coronavirus anxiety.
Coronavirus has done this, not random strangers on the internet.

We’ve all been thrown into the same situation, being happy and positive about it won’t change the reality, sadly. I think setting an 18 month prediction was a mentally healthy one, it’s a start on getting us out of this.

Odd thread.
Odd perspective OP.
Very odd.
