Where are those who predicted 18 months lockdown now

AfterAte · 05/07/2020 22:18

Firstly I realise that the lockdown in England is only being eases not ended. I am also aware that it is entirely possible there will be a second lockdown necessitated by a second spike. Finally, I am aware of and grateful for the sacrifices of those frontline workers, sad for those who have lost loved ones and both aware and grateful for the sacrifices of those who died in the 2 world wars and in other conflicts.

On 21st March on this website a thread entitled "How long are you expecting this to go on for?" was posted. Several posters speculated that "this" would last 18 months or longer and others also said there would likely be a war as well. I realise there has been terrible suffering and my mental health has been I impacted. However, rightly or wrongly, the lockdown is significantly eased and plans are being made for a near future which can in no way be described as lockdown. I wondered if any of those who predicted 18 months would like to comment here and perhaps admit that they were wrong. I'm afraid I still see their motivation as primarily to drag others down, so I'm not holding my breath, but neither am I prepared not to call them out. They've ruined MN, and they made an awful awful time worse.

Chill

hardboiledeggs · 06/07/2020 06:08

Given that leceister is being put on a local lockdown, they may be right. It's looking likely that parts of the country will need to close when covid numbers rise again. It's likely, according to actual scientists that we could be living with covid for a number of years unless a "cure" is found. I don't see how people speculating can make this "worse" surely the 40 odd thousand deaths did that Hmm

PopsicleHustler · 06/07/2020 06:31

I would have said it would go on for 18 months, the covid19 in the uk, not lockdown. But I do feel.we are in for a second lockdown. Definitely not a war unless we can prove china did this on purpose, maybe some people will . I dont know

glitterelf · 06/07/2020 06:36

YABU we are still in lockdown. I'm sure most of those people probably meant that we wouldn't be back to normal for 18mths. Considering we are in the middle of a pandemic and there is also swine flu that could also turn into a pandemic and now a case of the bubonic plague there's a massive amount of uncertainty to life as we once knew it.

Llamazoom · 06/07/2020 06:36

Why does having realistic expectations regarding Covid mean you are a dementor or scaremonger?
I can’t understand people who ‘don’t know what all the fuss is about, it’s only a virus’ I only see these people online not in real life which tells me all I need to know.

Sharkerr · 06/07/2020 06:40

Everyone who gave their views back in March was completely entitled to, you silly sausage. Not everyone could be 100% correct. Doesn’t change that nobody has to return and answer to you.

And unless you’re trawling every single thread top to bottom you couldn’t possibly know whether some have acknowledged they were off in their predictions anyway (if you are then I mean this gently, but you may need to step away from MN for a bit!)

It must be very tiring trying to keep score all the time, waiting with bated breath for ‘apologies’ you’re not entitled to and that likely won’t materialise.

Put your phone down and go enjoy the new semi-freedoms we’ve been given recently :) bitterness isn’t a helpful emotion.

Sharkerr · 06/07/2020 06:42

Dominicgoings

Yep... strange.

Either OP is on the wind up or they’re just a bit of an odd duck (hopefully if the latter some more balanced replies will help with their perspective).

Your username tickled me 🤣

Sharkerr · 06/07/2020 06:47

Does this resonate OP?

Seriously for a moment though, with several posters picking up on something that leads them to suggest you see your GP, I hope you feel able to take heed, if only for a quick chat to see how it goes Flowers

Where are those who predicted 18 months lockdown now
DomDoesWotHeWants · 06/07/2020 06:55

Nobody did.

What an odd post.

People said the repercussions would last for maybe years but no one predicted an 18 month shut down that I saw. Where is your evidence for this?

Bonkers.

jessstan2 · 06/07/2020 06:55

I haven't come across anyone who thought lockdown would last eighteen months. Most people seemed to think it wouldn't last as long as it did. The important thing is it is easing now and that people are careful so we don't go back to square one.

CrumpetyTea · 06/07/2020 06:57

So there was a thread entitled "how long do you expect it to end" and some people said they expected it to be 18 months - and this ruined mumsnet for you - how? some people presumably said it would be over in days - they were wrong too- wasn't this a problem??
People don't (generally) post to big themselves up- I suspect this is what they genuinely thought- they probably weren't trying to scare other people but were scared themselves- its not all about you!

Mintychoc1 · 06/07/2020 06:59

I know what you mean OP. In the early stages, when we were all a bit confused and shell shocked by what was happening, there were quite a few posters who seemed intent on making everyone feel even worse.
They would post with great authority, often claiming inside knowledge, making big statements like “schools won’t open until September 2021”, “many thousands of people will die alone at home because hospitals will be overwhelmed”. Then smugly saying “I for one won’t be leaving the house for at least a year”.

It was strange, almost as if they were enjoying the misery. Looking back I don’t think they enjoyed the actual lockdown, but they certainly enjoyed the power of scaring the hell out of a load on other people.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/07/2020 07:14

"I can’t understand people who ‘don’t know what all the fuss is about, it’s only a virus’ I only see these people online not in real life which tells me all I need to know."

I see them in real life I'm afraid. All male for some reason. Two out of the three of them it's because they have an addictive hobby that they weren't allowed to do for a while.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/07/2020 07:15

"there is also swine flu that could also turn into a pandemic and now a case of the bubonic plague"

Haven't heard of this. There was a swine flu epidemic about 10 years ago then it became one of the usual winter flus. What's this about it becoming a pandemic?

Beebeet · 06/07/2020 07:20

We don't know if they were wrong yet though. If Mumsnet was affecting you, why did you keep looking at it? Some self responsibility comes to mind.

Headandheart · 06/07/2020 07:20

I don’t remember any such threads so I don’t think it was a widely held view. There were many more of the it’s just flu stop panicking type threads playing it all down.

Fwiw I think there will be disruption to our daily lives for a good 18 months.

Most people disagree with you according to the vote.

lilgreen · 06/07/2020 07:26

Errrr we’re still in it! 18 months looks likely as we’re already 6 months down.

glitterelf · 06/07/2020 07:29

@Gwenhwyfar I believe it was reported last week about the new swine flu outbreak and I've seen this morning about the bubonic plague which is currently trending on Twitter, all 3 originate from China.

DuineArBith · 06/07/2020 07:31

The key point for me is that many posters wilfully did not specify what they meant by "this". It is one thing to say social distancing will last 18 months, another to deliberately not say what aspect would last that long in order to plant the seed in others minds that a full lockdown, or a series of lockdown would last that long.

Why didn't you ask them what they meant, then?

It's incredibly unlikely that anyone predicted that full lockdown would last for 18 months, not least because the economy obviously couldn't handle it. If you chose to interpret posts that way, it's not the fault of the people posting.

TheLegendOfZelda · 06/07/2020 07:31

1/3 of the way in to an obviously unfinished saga probably isn't the best time to ask that question!

As for war ... I don't think posters meant war in a few weeks or months. I'd go for say 5 years. It took 10 after the great depression. Economic disaster usually ends in war. That's just history, and humans, what can you do?

KaptainKaveman · 06/07/2020 07:31

"They've ruined MN and they've made an awful awful time worse".

Top marks for hyperbole there OP!

Jeremyironsnothing · 06/07/2020 07:35

I'd love to be wrong.

I wasn't on that thread, but I can't see this being over for a long time, and see now being the calm before another storm.

I do, very much, hope I'm wrong.

Jazzled · 06/07/2020 07:35

OP: "AIBU?"

OVERWHELMING MAJORITY : "YES, I'M AFRAID YOU ARE"

OP: "I'M NOT UNREASONABLE, YOU'RE ALL UNREASONABLE"

Deary me 🤦‍♀️

randomer · 06/07/2020 07:38

If you can be " dragged down" by people expressing an opinion on MN, perhaps you need to work on your boundaries.

Hingeandbracket · 06/07/2020 07:44

They've ruined MN
Grin Ok then
