Where are those who predicted 18 months lockdown now

AfterAte · 05/07/2020 22:18

Firstly I realise that the lockdown in England is only being eases not ended. I am also aware that it is entirely possible there will be a second lockdown necessitated by a second spike. Finally, I am aware of and grateful for the sacrifices of those frontline workers, sad for those who have lost loved ones and both aware and grateful for the sacrifices of those who died in the 2 world wars and in other conflicts.

On 21st March on this website a thread entitled "How long are you expecting this to go on for?" was posted. Several posters speculated that "this" would last 18 months or longer and others also said there would likely be a war as well. I realise there has been terrible suffering and my mental health has been I impacted. However, rightly or wrongly, the lockdown is significantly eased and plans are being made for a near future which can in no way be described as lockdown. I wondered if any of those who predicted 18 months would like to comment here and perhaps admit that they were wrong. I'm afraid I still see their motivation as primarily to drag others down, so I'm not holding my breath, but neither am I prepared not to call them out. They've ruined MN, and they made an awful awful time worse.

This is totally bizarre.

I was actually wrong the other way, I said multiple times 'ah don't worry about it, remeber swine flu' Blush yeah it's a bit embarrassing but of well.

Yabu up

x2boys · 05/07/2020 22:38

People post all kinds of shite on here you have to takes it all with a pinch of salt ,nobody knows with any certainty what's going to happen in the next few months apart from the " Experts" here🙄

AfterAte · 05/07/2020 22:38

I don't agree that what I wrote was dramatic. I though my they made an awful time worse precisely due to making people with time on their hands and at a time when there were apocalyptic predictions all over the internet. For me MN has been ruined because of the depressing posts and way people have been

I think you need to seek some professional help, OP. Your anger (and weirdly misplaced glee) about these people - who you can’t identify or quote directly - being wrong is disturbing, and your need to have them admit they were wrong is just downright odd. I find your posts strange but I wouldn’t go so far as to say you’ve ruined MN with them. Because that would be insane.

LesNanas · 05/07/2020 22:40

Do you not have access to the media and a Google, OP? Are anonymous posters on Mn your only source of knowledge on coronavirus? Hmm

LaurieFairyCake · 05/07/2020 22:40

What are you talking about?

Literally dozens of places are having rolling lockdowns across the world!

And we're still at the beginning of the epidemic with new knowledge that says immunity only lasts a couple of months - unlike flu which lasts a year

This is almost worse than most predictions with 60000 plus dead 💀

derta · 05/07/2020 22:42

Probably eating pasta with tomato sauce and wiping their arses excessively

🤣

Were they the same ones who knew what Covid was in Dec?

PomBearsyummy · 05/07/2020 22:42

" However, rightly or wrongly, the lockdown is significantly eased and plans are being made for a near future which can in no way be described as lockdown. I wondered if any of those who predicted 18 months would like to comment here and perhaps admit that they were wrong"

I think you are getting a long way ahead of yourself. This is an extremely contagious virus and its transmission has been artificially surpressed by the combined actions of our society. If you look at the Spanish Flu (not that is originated in Spain) there were three waves. Now consider that the coronavirus first wave never reached its full potential. I am very wary about what the second wave might be like.

To be certain that there will be no more countrywide lock downs is very naive.

tabulahrasa · 05/07/2020 22:43

But the government and scientists were saying, up to 18 months until things were more like normal with periods of easing of restrictions and possibly tightening them back up again later within that.

In fact they’re mostly still saying that.

So... bit early to say that’s wrong really...

And yet here you are, posting on your 'ruined' Mumsnet.

Quite how you can't see why you're being dramatic is a worry in itself.

It's the internet. It's full of opinions, shits and giggles.

Try not to take it so seriously.

QueenBlueberries · 05/07/2020 22:43

I am a lot more interested in people stating that this is just a bad flu - considering that we are now at over 65 000 excess death, i'd like to hear from them.

18 months was a wild statement, at the beginning of the crisis it was difficult to predict. I agree, many parts of the economy are opening but schools are still shut, so are theaters, the NHS has huge backlogs and waiting lists. Many people have lost their jobs. And where I live the R rate is over 1. So it's not over, although I am not one who said 18 months before. My guess was around 12 months and I wish I'd be wrong.

AnneLovesGilbert · 05/07/2020 22:44

I’m with @FourEyesGood

Are you okay? Whatever’s going on for you picking this fight tonight is unlikely to help. Put the kettle on, read something light, get some sleep.

AfterAte · 05/07/2020 22:44

I don't think being angry at those who posted these kinds of comments indicates a need to seek professional help. In fact it seems to me that people use suggestions of mental health issues to try to bully and undermine posts that they disagree with. I don't have a need for them to admit they were wrong and neither do I have any expectation that any will. Posting that I wondered if they will do this does not constitute demonstration of a need, and disagreeing with and having been annoyed and upset by what others have posted is not an indication of anger management issues.

I’m not one given to pronounce potential timelines and forcefully ram opinions down people’s throats and I’m first to admit I don’t know much about anything really, but I find the tone of this thread distasteful and pointless. Lots of emotive language going on from the op and as for ruining mn, why are you still here then 🤔

Babs709 · 05/07/2020 22:44

Why has it ruined mumsnet? Do you mean because you’ve always found mumsnet to be a source of support and reassurance but it wasn’t able to be that during this time?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 05/07/2020 22:47

Can only advise you to not read some threads given how you have said you feel

It’s been a really stressful time for many people for many different reasons and some on here is been tragically sad

Sparklesocks · 05/07/2020 22:47

What a strange thing to post. Yes when Covid all kicked off things were uncertain and nobody really knew what would happen - the virus wasn’t even really understood then (even now it’s still quite baffling but experts knew even less back in March). And yes some posters may have been a bit hasty with their predictions and on the dramatic side - but people were frightened, our way of life as we knew it was completely changed in a matter of weeks - can you really blame people for not knowing what would happen and freaking out, possibly catastrophising in the moment?

Have you been patiently waiting since March to post this so you could prove people wrong? If so...that’s quite bizarre. Just let it go, I promise you’ll be infinitely happier not obsessing about what people may or may not write on message boards.

Chloemol · 05/07/2020 22:48

Oh grow up

‘They ruined MN , and made an awful time worse, ‘.

don’t be so stupid, why so dramatic, you didn’t have to read the posts you could have scrolled on past

Anyone is entitled to any view they want but this was the start of something we didn’t know, and still dont know a lot about it, we have localised lockdowns, Germany has had the same and Spain has announced two in the last couple of days so actually we don’t jnkw how long this is going on for

tiredanddangerous · 05/07/2020 22:49

Well we don't know they were wrong yet, do we? I think you should speak to your GP.

gamerchick · 05/07/2020 22:49

For me MN has been ruined because of the depressing posts and way people have been

But you're still here?

You're talking as though this thing is over. Come back when it is maybe. The beauty of a message board is you can avoid stuff you don't want to read.

Llamazoom · 05/07/2020 22:50

I don’t think any poster said 18 months of lockdown, more like 18 months of restrictions before life goes back to some sort of normality, it’s looking likely so maybe you are the one who is wrong. It isn’t over unfortunately.

Igotthemheavyboobs · 05/07/2020 22:50

But why did you pay so much mind to random people on an anonymous forum?

Did you confuse MN posts with the BoJo updates?

Redwinestillfine · 05/07/2020 22:50
Biscuit
netflixismysidehustle · 05/07/2020 22:50

This is a goady and dickish post.

People get things wrong all the time

Some people thought CV would t reach the UK
Some thought that we wouldn't have food shortages
Some thought it would quickly disappear like SARS
I remember one person starting a thread saying that there was no way that Johnson would order a lockdown earlier on the day he ordered a lockdown

Why are you targeting people who thought 18 months?

Chloemol · 05/07/2020 22:52

@AfterAte

For me MN has been ruined because of the depressing posts and way people have been

So either don’t read the posts, or leave MN but this is a free country and people can say what they want within MN rules

What makes you the guardian of what should and shouldn’t be said in case it ruins it for you

Get over yourself
