Yorkshire or Scotland

Hi everyone, firstly I'm not sure if this is the right place to post?
But I've got some questions if anyone am help, we are planning on a staycation this year, we are travelling from London and are planning on going to a caravan park ( think haven etc) we can't decide between Yorkshire and Scotland. The park in Scotland we are thinking of are not far from Glasgow, but the big thing putting us off is the weather. We are going 17th August for a week. We've always wanted to go to Scotland but haven't been before. Can anyone tell me things to do around Glasgow, we can take day trips a big further too. What's the weather like at that time? Normally kids live the pool in the park but they won't be open this year , and I'm guessing it will be to cold for them to enjoy beaches in Scotland ? Also what about the midges, are they really bad at that time of year?
As for Yorkshire, again we've never really explored Yorkshire, can anyone recommend things to do there?
Where would you go ? I'd live to go to Scotland but really don't want it to be really cold or wet and miserable that would just ruin the "summer holiday "

Forgot to add I have 4dc ages 14,11,6,3

Thanks so much

@wheretogothisyear

Returning to this way too late and can see you've booked Scotland, so hope you have fun.

The first time I went was for a 5 day 'mini-moon' after getting married as we couldn't do our proper honeymoon until later in the year. It was ok, bit 'arse end of nowhere' but just mooched about on our own schedule, ate out, visited several distilleries!

Second time we went back with 8yo DC in tow and honestly it was not a holiday. Self catering and over an hours drive each way to get anywhere remotely interesting, so up at sparrowfart most mornings to 'make the most of the day' then arriving back knackered, cooking, cleaning up, shoehorning DD into bed and collapsing in front of TV with shit reception and virtually no internet only to do it all again the following day. The weather wasn't bad on either visit tbf.

Tbf I think some of my issues were down to company...I went with XH to Scotland, Yorkshire was first holiday after separating, just me and DD.
Also I'm more of an indoors, arts and culture type person. If you like outdoors and being active I suspect Scotland is much more enjoyable.

I'd also wanted to go to Yorkshire for years and my ex refused point blank to entertain the idea, so it was every awaited break.

That said I did enjoy Oban & Edinburgh and Stirling Safari Park, if it's open, was great. There's a little archaeological centre near Campbelltown too which is a ball ache to get to but surprisingly fun and interesting.

randomsabreuse · 08/07/2020 09:42

Blair Drummond is open. Need to book a couple of weeks in advance at the moment but it is summer holidays and it only opened 28/6

MrsGoggings85 · 08/07/2020 10:00

If you're worried about the weather it won't be much different maybe 1-2 degrees. West Scotland can be wet though, but beautiful when it's warm.

Jkmb · 08/07/2020 10:15

We're going to Blair Drummond on Saturday 25th. Can't wait it'll be our 1st day out since lockdown. I took my kids to Edinburgh just before lockdown. Was a great day out. We went to camera obscura, Edinburgh dungeons walked up to the castle and visited Botanic Gardens. Loads of street entertainers there aswell.

midnightstar66 · 08/07/2020 10:26

Don't forget Scottish schools will be back taking with them some of the rougher visitors to Craig Tara. It would be a shame if a lot of the facilities are closed though as CT has a great pool. Remember restrictions here are a bit stricter and ferries to islands pretty hard to get a place on. The west of Scotland is generally wetter than the east but you can never tell. It could be lovely but as a pp said it can be quite autumnal in August

midnightstar66 · 08/07/2020 10:32

I've been to seton sands a few times, the park is immaculate and we go just because it's much of a muchness as any other small haven park with out the kids moaning are we nearly there yet as it's only a short drive - we live in Edinburgh! Ive never found it rough, some of the families from other areas of Scotland are possibly a bit louder but don't forget they'll all be back at school.

midnightstar66 · 08/07/2020 10:33

And no then border won't be closed 😆

wheretogothisyear · 08/07/2020 10:47

@MintyCedric I have noticed it will take about an hour to get to Glasgow area but I think that's with most caravan holidays we've been too. Yorkshire is still in my list. We had a family vote and Scotland won 🤣this time.

@randomsabreuse what's Blair Drummond?

@midnightstar66 yes I know Scottish schools will be back so hopefully it will be a bit quieter. I know the pool looks amazing. They have said they may open they will update us a week before our holiday so fingers crossed. I didn't know it would be hard to get on a ferry, any tips for how to or how early to book? Do you know the price?
Would love to go to Edinburgh too if we can make it. I'm trying to make a list of everything you all have mentioned as it all sounds good. Hope the weather is goos and it's dry. Thanks

Sorry I don't know the prices but I know that they are only accepting bookings 2 weeks in advance and have a massively reduced number of passengers. Some local priority too for those needing to get on and off for work/ medical needs. I'd leave that as a wait and see what the situation is like option. Hope you enjoy Scotland, honestly the huge majority of us aren't standing at the borders hissing go home to anyone without a scottish number plate.

MintyCedric · 08/07/2020 11:23

Blair Drummond is the Safari park in/near Stirling

www.blairdrummond.com

As jkmb said the Camera Obscura in Edinburgh is also well worth a visit.

wheretogothisyear · 08/07/2020 12:29

@midnightstar66 oh thanks so much I'll wait and see how it goes with the ferry. Glad to hear the majority are ok with us visiting from England 😊 can't wait to visit thanks so much

@MintyCedric oh a safari park sounds fab the kids will absolutely love that thanks
Will also look into camera obscura too thanks so much

There's M&ds theme Park at Strathclyde Country Park in Motherwell also.

wanderlove · 08/07/2020 16:40

I can't comment on Scotland but really wouldn't chose Bridlington for a Yorkshire holiday. I'd either go Filey, Robin Hoods Bay or Whitby. Lots to do and much nicer than Bridlington or Scarbados.
What about Northumberland? It's so beautiful and lots of caravan parks. I've heard good stuff about Haggerston Castle which I think is Haven. You could even go over the border really easily for a day in Scotland. We live in the North East and often holiday in the Lakes on the West coast. So many times the weather has been gorgeous at hone and rained all week! You can never guarantee it but you stand a chance of better whether on the East coast

wheretogothisyear · 08/07/2020 18:12

@Jkmb thank you I'll look into that again that's something kids will love.

@wanderlove I've already booked now but did consider Northumberland too, will do that next time. Fingers crossed for the weather.

Jkmb · 08/07/2020 18:25

Amazonia is at M&ds aswell. It's an indoor rainforest with animals, insects and butterflies. Sorry 🙈 keep thinking of more places to visit!

wheretogothisyear · 08/07/2020 19:56

@Jkmb oh keep them coming I'm
Making a list 🤣 thank you

midnightstar66 · 09/07/2020 09:50

Didn't M&D's theme park close down?

Goingdownto · 09/07/2020 09:52

I was in m and ds last year

midnightstar66 · 09/07/2020 09:55

It went in to administration early this year - there was uproar when they went bust 2 days before pay day but then reopened the cafe (all just before covid)

lyralalala · 09/07/2020 10:06

M&D's was bought over, but they haven't re-hired any old staff and there's nothing on their website yet about them re-opening

Also, looking at Glasgow Life's current planned schedule Kelvingrove will be opening at reduced capacity the week the OP is visting. The Riverside museum won't be. Their re-opening schedule runs until October.

@wheretogothisyear Please be aware that Blair Drummond and Edinburgh Zoo both need booked in advance at the moment

midnightstar66 · 09/07/2020 10:20

From what I read at the time they were only planning to partially re open not the theme park - but then covid happened so who knows.

Jkmb · 09/07/2020 10:32

They are definitely reopening.

Yorkshire or Scotland
midnightstar66 · 09/07/2020 10:49

Wow, feel bad for all the staff that lost their jobs 2 days before pay day then couldn't be furloughed.
