Yorkshire or Scotland

Hi everyone, firstly I'm not sure if this is the right place to post?
But I've got some questions if anyone am help, we are planning on a staycation this year, we are travelling from London and are planning on going to a caravan park ( think haven etc) we can't decide between Yorkshire and Scotland. The park in Scotland we are thinking of are not far from Glasgow, but the big thing putting us off is the weather. We are going 17th August for a week. We've always wanted to go to Scotland but haven't been before. Can anyone tell me things to do around Glasgow, we can take day trips a big further too. What's the weather like at that time? Normally kids live the pool in the park but they won't be open this year , and I'm guessing it will be to cold for them to enjoy beaches in Scotland ? Also what about the midges, are they really bad at that time of year?
As for Yorkshire, again we've never really explored Yorkshire, can anyone recommend things to do there?
Where would you go ? I'd live to go to Scotland but really don't want it to be really cold or wet and miserable that would just ruin the "summer holiday "

Forgot to add I have 4dc ages 14,11,6,3

Thanks so much

@dogperson05
Get a grip. Border won't be closed. She doesn't have the power. Not everyone in Scotland thinks as you insinuate.

AftonGlen · 06/07/2020 11:07

Glasgow is really not that hard to get to from Ayrshire...thousands of people commute to the city every day, the transport links are decent and the M77 gets you from Glasgow to Ayrshire in no time.

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 16:21

Ok so looks like we are planning on haven craig Tara site now as the park dean one done have good reveiws ?? Anyone been to the haven site ?

We've been to Craig Tara a few times.

There's lots to do in the park, the beaches are lovely and Heads of Ayr park nearby is worth a visit.

Food was overpriced and not very nice to tbh, not so keen on the entertainment as it's a bit dingey and always mobbed (so get there early if you're going!) but that's not really our scene any way so wouldn't put us off.

The little shop isn't too badly priced so we bought easy things to make for ourselves in the caravan (pizzas, pasta etc).

lyralalala · 06/07/2020 16:29

I've been to Craig Tara a few times. It's what you expect. It's busy and a lot of kids running riot. The pool is good, the entertainment is as cheesy as you expect at Haven parks and you spend a fortune in the arcade as the kids are drawn in by it.

It really is what you make of it.

However, it's unlikely it'll be completely open as normal in August so previous experiences are pointless

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 16:47

Thank you both, I've been to haven and park dean sites before and think
They are fine, so that's what I'm expecting but reviews are scathing me...
@lyralalala why wouldn't things be open in August? Isn't that peak season for visitors?
This tart however due to Covid I know it may not be open

Haven have said themselves that all facilities are unlikely to be open on their parks this year. Gyms, pools and indoor entertainment aren't being reveiwed until next week in Scotland with the earliest opening dates of end of July. Any opening is likely to involve distancing at least, or a staggered opening

It won't be open as normal somewhere as big and busy as Craig Tara at any point this year imo. It's too big.

Kelburn Castle is a good day out. If you like cycling then get the ferry from Largs to Millport for the day. Arran on the ferry is a nice trip as well. Adrossan isn't too far from Ayr for the ferry.

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 17:11

@lyralalala oh I see , yes I've seen they probably won't have much on, I think our main focus will be day trips. Thanks for the recommendations I'll add then to my list x

Heads of Ayr Farm Park right next to the park. Kids will love it.

Jkmb · 07/07/2020 13:34

Culzean has a big outdoor park for the kids, gardens, Swan pond, walks and beach. Beach park at Ayr. Kelburn Castle and Country Park is good for kids, play area, secret forest. Arran is another good day out. There's the Balgarth Pines restaurant not far from Craig Tara, good food. Big outdoor beer garden. Further afield there's Blair Drummond Safari park, great day out. Approx 1.5hr drive tho. Or Loch Lomond about the same distance. Go Ape in Aberfoyle. Train to Glasgow, loads to do there. Hope you have a lovely holiday.

Ginfordinner · 07/07/2020 13:40

@BikeRunSki

I'm 30 miles from Glasgow. It's currently a baltic 11 degrees and I have my heating on. In the last week it's rained most days. I do believe we had a sunny afternoon (couple hours). Who knows what the weather could be on any given day.

I’m in West Yorkshire, and our weather has been much the same recently.

We have postponed our annual trip to Scotland for several reasons, one of which being concern that the border will be closed to travellers from England.

I'm currently in Northumberland, and locals have been reporting that the Scots are throwing things at cars coming over from England. They really don't want the English to visit right now.
wheretogothisyear · 07/07/2020 14:33

@Jkmb thanks so much for the ideas, all notes down.
@Ginfordinner really ?? Haven't heard that .

I was told that this morning when I went to the butchers. Other customers had come in and told him. We aren't far from Scotland where we are right now.

wheretogothisyear · 07/07/2020 17:39

@Ginfordinner oh dear, hopefully we will be ok. Obviously we will abide by the rules.

Thurston Manor in East Lothian is a nice site with good facilities. We had a lovely long weekend there in a top notch caravan. Easy travelling distance to Edinburgh, even a day trip to Glasgow or there's plenty to do in East Lothian.

Iggi999 · 07/07/2020 18:00

Ginfordinner who are the "they" who don't want English people visiting? Do all Scottish residents have some kind of hive mind? There have been protests at the border which have been condemned by the First Minister. No idea the numbers involved. Doubt it was all the 6 million people who live here though.

Iggi999 · 07/07/2020 18:02

This may already have been said but the Scottish schools will be back so will be quieter than normal.

Ginfordinner · 07/07/2020 18:20

I suspect it might be hearsay, but if it isn't it will be near Berwick or Coldstream. The people at the borders won't represent all the Scots. I am intelligent enough to realise that, but this is what I was told this morning. Maybe it is all made up.
Jkmb · 07/07/2020 19:08

From what I saw it was three people holding a couple of banners up and they were moved on by police.

Soulstirring · 07/07/2020 19:14

I live in Yorkshire and would recommend fraisthorpe beach next to Bridlington. Filet, Scarborough and Whitby are all lovely. A train ride in the moors and a trip to York on the train perhaps? Dalby forest, castle Howard each within a half hour or so drive. We live a hour away from the coast but are going camping there for three nights in aug before school starts again. I love Scotland too but it is a bit of a drive (says the lady going to Cornwall Hmm)

StoneofDestiny · 07/07/2020 19:32

West coast of Scotland decidedly warmer and drier than Yorkshire. I've lived in both. If doing a Yorkshire I'd do North Yorkshire. Areas near Glasgow - loads of tourist stuff, Loch Lomond, Campsie Fells, Stirlingshire and pop over to Edinburgh (doddle on the train). Glasgow itself has a ton of tourist things - great museums, galleries, parks and trips down The Clyde and trips across to the islands. Seaside resorts easy access by train too - Ayr being the biggest of the resorts.

wheretogothisyear · 07/07/2020 20:42

@StoneofDestiny I've booked Scotland, booked Ayr in the end. Very excited looks like lots of fun. We definitely want to do as much as possible and really want to go to Edinburgh too, but drive shows and 1hr 30 mins each way so not sure if that will be possible. I'm really praying the weather is good, dry already so we can make the most of our trip. I'm going to have a look at the places you mentioned and hopefully plan properly so we can for it all in. Thanks for your help.

Take the train across to Edinburgh - loads to do there too. Culzean Castle will be a good day out for you too. Enjoy your break 🥂
