Yorkshire or Scotland

Hi everyone, firstly I'm not sure if this is the right place to post?
But I've got some questions if anyone am help, we are planning on a staycation this year, we are travelling from London and are planning on going to a caravan park ( think haven etc) we can't decide between Yorkshire and Scotland. The park in Scotland we are thinking of are not far from Glasgow, but the big thing putting us off is the weather. We are going 17th August for a week. We've always wanted to go to Scotland but haven't been before. Can anyone tell me things to do around Glasgow, we can take day trips a big further too. What's the weather like at that time? Normally kids live the pool in the park but they won't be open this year , and I'm guessing it will be to cold for them to enjoy beaches in Scotland ? Also what about the midges, are they really bad at that time of year?
As for Yorkshire, again we've never really explored Yorkshire, can anyone recommend things to do there?
Where would you go ? I'd live to go to Scotland but really don't want it to be really cold or wet and miserable that would just ruin the "summer holiday "

Forgot to add I have 4dc ages 14,11,6,3

Thanks so much

I live in Yorkshire. We go to primrose valley every year, its a nice site with a lake to walk around and green spaces. We are going next month for the hideaway option as even with facilities closed you're right near the beach. We're planning lots of walks and just a change of scenery. Yorkshire has beautiful coast and countryside. Close to Scarborough Castle, Whitby, Robin Hoods Bay, etc.

I've been to Scotland but not in August. The coast and countryside was beautiful and I'd love to go back.

Holidaying in the UK you never have guaranteed weather! So I'd look more at location. What's on site and what's on offer nearby.

If I was driving from London personally I'd choose the shorter drive, purely as I'm the only driver and driving exhausts me.

@Puffalicious
Yes, after I've had a week off work :(

MereDintofPandiculation · 05/07/2020 22:24

You're thinking about the E of Yorkshire, the W of Scotland. Since most of our wet weather comes from the west, on average W Scotland will be wetter than E Yorks. But what either will be like on your particular fortnight is anyone's guess. I've just seen a graph which showed that in February the whole of Great Britain had twice as as much rain as normal ... except for the bit around Aberdeen.

The weather on the west coast of Scotland is incredibly varied. 10 days ago it was 29 degrees where I am in Glasgow. It’s been 12 degrees today. However there are lots of things to do if you like the outdoors and day trips to the islands of Cumbrae, Bute and even Arran are easily doable from Ayr.

Nicetoolshed · 05/07/2020 22:26

That's not a staycation. A staycation is staying at home.

wheretogothisyear · 05/07/2020 23:01

@MereDintofPandiculation yes I guess that's something to think about, weather is so unpredictable in the uk 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sorry I don't know what's happened in mn it keeps reposting...
As for the midges so is it we won't have much of a problem around that area? What about the coast any issues with midges there ?

We moved from one to the other and I would say in Scotland August feels like autumn, but I didn’t notice that so much in Yorkshire. I still compare the weather. Some months there is no difference in temperature, some it’s a few degrees.
If you decide on Yorkshire I’d recommend Filey as being much nicer than Bridlington.

VenusClapTrap · 05/07/2020 23:09

@StationView

The main advantage of Yorkshire is that it’s not so far to drive.

The main advantage of Yorkshire is that it's God's Own County Shock

Well yes. Of course. That goes without saying Grin
Gre8scott · 05/07/2020 23:15

Scotland will be beautiful the week of the 18th august the schools are bad and the weather is lovely until the 29th june and good after the 17th august !!!!

wheretogothisyear · 05/07/2020 23:18

TARSCOUT I feel your pain, it has been unseasonably wet this week. Flowers

blibblibs · 05/07/2020 23:23

We're from Scotland but live in Yorkshire. We've had caravan holidays in both areas while living in both areas and without a doubt the Scottish ones were better!
Regarding the weather it really is pot luck, we've enjoyed both regardless of how kind the weather has been.
But if you can't decide the NE around Alnwick is lovely too.

Puffalicious · 05/07/2020 23:23

We were in Filey in July one year- lovely but boy, it rained. Way up North in Arisaig we had scorching sunshine and 24 degrees in Sep, we got flooded in Wales and Northumberland 2 summers ago it hit almost 30! You can't guess it.

Puffalicious · 05/07/2020 23:25

I was just going to say Northumberland- we love it there: Banburgh, Seahouses, Alnwick, Whitley Bay, Tynemouth. Absolutely stunning beaches and picture postcard pretty.

notangelinajolie · 05/07/2020 23:34

I wouldn't be relying on either Scotland or Yorkshire for the weather.

My choice would be Scotland I wouldn't go to Glasgow. If your're going to travel that far you might as well go a bit higher and see a bit of scenery.

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 00:11

@notangelinajolie I just assumed Yorkshire would be a bit warmer ? Can you suggest places you would recommend please

@blibblibs thank you looks like Scotland is winning, I hope every is open by then for us to explore, with social distancing of course

BilboBercow · 06/07/2020 00:27

OP don't take your kids to Craig Tara. It's rough as fuck. Also you really aren't THAT close to Glasgow in Ayrshire, over an hour in the car and lots of windy roads.

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 00:43

@BilboBercow really? Where do you suggest then? Any ideas appreciated

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 00:44

What about Wemyss bay?

OP posts:
emmathedilemma · 06/07/2020 00:51

I looked at those haven sites on the west coast (the price attracted me) but colleagues advised that unless you like walking along wet windy beaches or playing golf there's really not much to do if the weather ain't good. It's quite a way from Glasgow. I'd stick to the east coast, it gets a lot less drizzly type rain.
