Yorkshire or Scotland

Hi everyone, firstly I'm not sure if this is the right place to post?
But I've got some questions if anyone am help, we are planning on a staycation this year, we are travelling from London and are planning on going to a caravan park ( think haven etc) we can't decide between Yorkshire and Scotland. The park in Scotland we are thinking of are not far from Glasgow, but the big thing putting us off is the weather. We are going 17th August for a week. We've always wanted to go to Scotland but haven't been before. Can anyone tell me things to do around Glasgow, we can take day trips a big further too. What's the weather like at that time? Normally kids live the pool in the park but they won't be open this year , and I'm guessing it will be to cold for them to enjoy beaches in Scotland ? Also what about the midges, are they really bad at that time of year?
As for Yorkshire, again we've never really explored Yorkshire, can anyone recommend things to do there?
Where would you go ? I'd live to go to Scotland but really don't want it to be really cold or wet and miserable that would just ruin the "summer holiday "

Forgot to add I have 4dc ages 14,11,6,3

Thanks so much

Going to a Haven Caravan park isn't really a fair comparison of different parts of Britain. I've been to plenty and to be honest without the pool and indoor facilities it's not worth it. There are lots of much nicer more up market caravan parks which are in much better positions to explore the lovely local area. For instance there are a few on the Fife coast - look up Sauchope Links Park for instance my fav. for dolphin watching - which are lovely or in Perthshire. loads to do around and about them and much nicer views from your van or lodge.

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 00:55

It actually looks like it will be park dean park rather than haven, I don't know if that's any better location wise, I've been to plenty of their parks always had a good experience. Anyone suggest any other

@Doubletrouble99 have you been yourself to any of those ? I'm happy to try others but obviously someone who's been their opinion in the place helps

@Doubletrouble99 I've just checked the park in Fife but it's showing no priories available 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've had two holidays on the West Coast of Scotland and one in Yorkshire (admittedly West/Dale's rather than coast).

Yorkshire would win hands down for me.

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 01:08

@MintyCedric that interesting everyone else seems to recommend Scotland. Any reason you didn't enjoy Scotland?

lyralalala · 06/07/2020 01:10

Are you driving up or using public transport?

Craig Tara isn't really close to Glasgow in terms of popping out for the day. It's a bugger of a drive.

If you are going to do Scotland driving, then either do one of the parks in the borders, do one of the cities properly or add another couple of hours to your drive and go to one of the further up parks.

Ayr really isn't worth the extra hours beyond Yorkshire

AnneOfQueenSables · 06/07/2020 01:13

Considering discussions about the possibility of local lockdowns, you'd be better with Yorkshire.

lyralalala · 06/07/2020 01:13

I think Tummel Valley is Park Dean. It's a nice park. Perth isn't that much of a stomp beyond Glasgow when you are already travelling a fair distance.

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 01:14

@lyralalala we are driving up, hmm ok
I'll check all the locations of
The park tomorrow and hopefully someone can recommend one thanks

@AnneOfQueenSables local
Lockdowns in Scotland you mean? Some places seem to say in or around Yorkshire May go in to a local lockdown as they are following Leicester, I'm not sure though?

The parks they have in Scotland are, sandy lands, Ayrshire , Wemyss bay in Renfrewshire, sundrum castle in Ayrshire, grannies helium hame in dornoch Sutherland , southernesa in Dumfries ,
Tunnel valley in Perthshire, Eyemouth in Berwickshire, Nairn lochloy in Inverness,

Hope that helps with locations so you can advise thanks

OP I'm not sure what Park Dean Weymss Bay is like. I've been to the one at Saltcoates and wouldn't recommend it. It's in an industrial Estate! Seaton Sands is a Haven and is lovely but is East Coast.

There's also a lovely caravan park on the banks of Loch Lomond, called Inverbeg caravan park, it has a hotel local and is a beautiful area but won't have the swimming pool and kids entertainment if that's important to you.
I adore the two Haven Parks in Northumberland(going to Berwick upon Tweed myself in August)

AnneOfQueenSables · 06/07/2020 01:23

I was meaning both and trying to judge which is least likely and if you'll get refunds since holiday insurance policies aren't covering Covid.

chrislilleyswig · 06/07/2020 01:28

OP was there a reason you wanted to come to Scotland?

The examples you've given of holiday parks are all over the country.

What is it you're looking for, other than a day trip to Glasgow , that you couldn't get in England.

Dornoch is further away from Glasgow than parts of Yorkshire

Dontknowwhybut · 06/07/2020 01:31

Wemyss Bay is much better than Craig Tara. But I agree with pp you would be better off going a bit further north to Tumnel Valley or even Nairn if you are going to Scotland.

AnneOfQueenSables · 06/07/2020 01:32

We stayed at Southerness a few years ago. I wouldn't recommend it. It was too busy, lax security and not much to do in the immediate area.

lyralalala · 06/07/2020 03:03

If you are driving Tummel Valley or Nairn would be my recommendations

Nairn is a good stomp though. Tummel Valley would be my recommendation

Forget Embo, Dornoch is a massive drive and the last couple of hours is the worst bits. It’s also a very small site and whilst scenic there’s not that much around

What is it you want to do? How old are the kids? Does it have to be Park Dean specifically?

Bluesheep8 · 06/07/2020 07:22

The parts of Yorkshire being mentioned in terms of local lockdowns are in South and West Yorkshire.
OP is considering East Yorkshire.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/07/2020 07:53

The weather in either Scotland or Yorkshire could be absolutely anything in August. Bridlington is probably overall drier and warmer than Western Scotland, but it doesn't make much difference if the wind is blowing the other way when you go.

Loads to do in and around Brid, several beach towns to visit both busy and quiet, near to The Deep aquarium in Hull, plus loads of museums, York is also not too far away, plus the North York Moors, also Flamingoland, Lightwater Valley, all sorts really. Probably the same for Western Scotland too.

I'd lean towards Yorkshire, simply due to the distance and probably a slightly drier climate. The sea temperature will actually be slightly warmer in Scotland as it benefits from the gulf stream, which the North Sea does not, but probably not noticeably so.

GreyishDays · 06/07/2020 07:54

West coast of Scotland is rainier and cloudier than east coast. Just find two locations and google the average monthly temps and days of sunshine.

Jkmb · 06/07/2020 08:46

I live 10 minutes drive from the park in Scotland and know some van owners there. There's a huge farm park directly next door which is a great day out. Its open at the moment. Culzean Castle and Country Park also nearby. Ayr has a big beach playground. Ayr town centre 10 minutes away, Prestwick full of lovely independent shops. Arran is lovely to visit. Kelburn country park with its fairy trails. Burns cottage and museum, Glasgow has loads to do. Weather can be hit and miss wherever you go but if you want to know anything about the area drop me a message I'm happy to help.

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 08:48

@lyralalala ok so that ones off the list, there's in particular we want to do in either, but just explore the areas see the sights, if Scotland the that's a place we haven't been at all so Loch llochmond, beaches and other things to see. Would love it if we were able to actually sit and enjoy the beaches instead if it actually being too windy, but like everyone said that's a pot of luck really. Oh and it doesn't have to be park dean it's usually park dean or haven we go that's all. Dc are 14,11,6,3 if the pools were open they'd be happy with that.

@Bluesheep8 yes that's true actually it's West Yorkshire it seems.

@BarbaraofSeville thanks for mentioning things to do in Yorkshire. If it's usually drier then I that's a good thing. I'm slightly leaning toward Yorkshire , also the fact that Scotland are about 2-3 weeks behind us in opening lockdown so things might be bit different too.

@GreyishDays I'll do that thanks

OP posts:
wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 08:51

@Jkmb oh that's sounds amazing and I'm glad it's all open too. Is that the original park in Ayr your mentioning then? Are the playgrounds actually open now in Scotland? What about the restaurants? I might just take up your offer of messaging you, probably a bit later in the week. Thanks

Sorry I see you are considering Park Dean. I was thinking about Haven Craig Tara which I feel is a much better park than sandy lands or weymss bay. There is less to do at and around those parks.
