Yorkshire or Scotland

Hi everyone, firstly I'm not sure if this is the right place to post?
But I've got some questions if anyone am help, we are planning on a staycation this year, we are travelling from London and are planning on going to a caravan park ( think haven etc) we can't decide between Yorkshire and Scotland. The park in Scotland we are thinking of are not far from Glasgow, but the big thing putting us off is the weather. We are going 17th August for a week. We've always wanted to go to Scotland but haven't been before. Can anyone tell me things to do around Glasgow, we can take day trips a big further too. What's the weather like at that time? Normally kids live the pool in the park but they won't be open this year , and I'm guessing it will be to cold for them to enjoy beaches in Scotland ? Also what about the midges, are they really bad at that time of year?
As for Yorkshire, again we've never really explored Yorkshire, can anyone recommend things to do there?
Where would you go ? I'd live to go to Scotland but really don't want it to be really cold or wet and miserable that would just ruin the "summer holiday "

Forgot to add I have 4dc ages 14,11,6,3

Thanks so much

Yes playparks are open now. Restaurants opening on 15th July. Beer Gardens opening today. I find midges are worse in places like Loch lomond rather than coastal areas or towns. But never found them a big problem.

LuaDipa · 06/07/2020 08:59

@StationView

The main advantage of Yorkshire is that it’s not so far to drive.

The main advantage of Yorkshire is that it's God's Own County Shock

This. But Scotland is lovely too.Grin
wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 09:01

@Jkmb ok thanks any recommendations on what to use to keep the midges away

I wouldn't choose Filey or Brid if you're considering the Yorkshire coast. Robin Hood's Bay, Whitby and Sandsend are much nicer. You could stay inland in the North York Moors and travel to various beaches from there. The Dales are really beautiful but your children may prefer the beaches.
To whoever said the weather is the same in Yorkshire versus Scotland - it's not. Scotland is a few degrees colder on average. Also, as some have pointed out, if you go to the West of Scotland it's likely to be noticeably rainier.
Finally, I'd book soon as many places have already sold out.

randomsabreuse · 06/07/2020 09:05

Big advantage of Scotland is that the schools will be back so less likely to be rammed, which will make a massive difference to what you can do and the length of queues!

Would also agree that the weather is bound to be nice that week! We moved to just north east of Glasgow in April, had about 3 days of rain until the schools broke up officially! Since holidays started it's been much wetter. Typical!

Thunderbolted · 06/07/2020 09:07

I do love Scotland but factor in the journey time. A couple of years ago we drove from Yorkshire to Skye and we had to plan in an overnight stay both ways (young kids) which took away from our holiday time.

LagunaBubbles · 06/07/2020 09:08

I live in the West Coast of Scotland in Ayrshire. So many beautiful beaches but no guarantee of the weather of course. My favourite beach in the world is inside Culzean Castle Country Park (National Trust). They are opening this week and I'm so excited about going back.
Don't stay at Sandylands, never been but heard its not very nice.

Jkmb · 06/07/2020 09:11

You can buy midge repellent but we've never needed it. If you are on Facebook there is a page Whats on Ayrshire or one called Whats on Glasgow which are good for letting you know about places to visit and events. Granted its been a lot quite lately but they also gives info on places which have reopened and facilities available.

BikeRunSki · 06/07/2020 09:13

I'm 30 miles from Glasgow. It's currently a baltic 11 degrees and I have my heating on. In the last week it's rained most days. I do believe we had a sunny afternoon (couple hours). Who knows what the weather could be on any given day.

I’m in West Yorkshire, and our weather has been much the same recently.

We have postponed our annual trip to Scotland for several reasons, one of which being concern that the border will be closed to travellers from England.

Jkmb · 06/07/2020 09:13

I second what @LagunaBubbles said. Culzean is a favourite of ours. Big play park for the kids aswell.

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 09:14

@BikeRunSki where sis you hear about the border being closed ? I haven't heard that and companies are still taking bookings

The North Yorkshire Moors are beautiful. Goathland is a lovely village where they filmed 'Heartbeat', and there's loads of campsites, B&Bs etc. Plus it's only a very short from Goathland to Whitby.

SilverOtter · 06/07/2020 09:15

A short drive that should've said🙄

wineymummy · 06/07/2020 09:22

Bridlington can be fairly uninspiring. Worth staying in North Yorkshire, lots to see around on the coast Whitby and you have the Yorkshire Moors inland, as well as day trips to York, Scarborough etc. Bridlington has Flamborough Head which is worth a visit but otherwise the coastline is pretty boring around there. Yes it's drier on the east coast but it can be overcast for days, compared to west coast where you are more likely to experience sunshine and pouring rain on the same day.

BikeRunSki · 06/07/2020 09:22

@wheretogothisyear, there seemed to be a lot of speculation about it on news reports last week, and discussion on how arrangements could be made for people who live in one country and work in the other. But speculation only. We have other reasons for not being able to go away.

dogperson05 · 06/07/2020 09:23

Don't come to Scotland! We have different rules. Some want the border to be closed as we are thinking the virus will spread up here because of relaxed English rules.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/07/2020 09:29

Oh good the snobs are here. I agree that some parts of Bridlington are 'cheap and cheerful' but the OPs DC will probably enjoy amusement arcades, candy floss and fairground rides.

Robin Hood's Bay might be 'nicer', but it's probably pretty boring for a 6 YO who probably just wants to shove a load of pennies into a flashing machine and eat their bodyweight in sugar.

Brid north of the Harbour is less brash, and if you're feeling active, you can park at Danes Dyke and walk into Brid through the wooded gorge and along the seafront - probably about 6 miles round trip.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/07/2020 09:35

The Bay Filey is a fairly new resort complex on the old Butlins site. Lots of choice of accommodation, a swimming pool and children's activities on site.

Doubletrouble99 · 06/07/2020 09:49

Re Park Dean, We stayed at Salt Coats during the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. It's rank, in a very poor area, there was a murder there a couple of years ago. Yes we've been to Craig Tara and Haggerston Castle, not been to Seaton Sands but it certainly doesn't have a good reputation, clientele is not good. Hacve also been to a few Havens in Yorkshire. Sorry to hear that Sauchope is full. I'd give them a ring. The company also have other parks in Perthshire etc. Good quality, well run so have a look. Go to the Scottish Tourism web site and have a look then ask any of us here if we've been is what I'd do. Good luck, I hope you find somewhere nice.

wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 10:04

@BarbaraofSeville I just saw the link looks gorgeous but all sold out

OP posts:
wheretogothisyear · 06/07/2020 10:08

@BikeRunSki @dogperson05 oh this doesn't sound good, I haven't heard anything, does it look likely to happen ?

OP posts:
Jkmb · 06/07/2020 10:21

I doubt that would happen. Nicola doesn't have the powers to close the border and Boris definitely wouldn't agree to it even if she wanted to.

emmathedilemma · 06/07/2020 10:50

hmm i was going to suggest the Seton Sands site as it's on a bus route into Edinburgh and there's plenty of places to explore locally if you've got a car. Sounds like the clientele aren't great though.
