To think hairdressers are CF?

Passing on PPE charge to customers.

Angry

Have been going 30 years to this chain.

In the last 10 since going grey, I've visited every 17 days damn you fast growing hair currently £58 per visit. Then hair cut every 3 months at approx another £50.

AIBU to think they should absorb this cost?

I think going forward OP, you might want to talk to your hairdresser about how you can redesign your highlights so they disguise your root regrowth better. 17 days? Quite apart from the cost, who on earth can be arsed going that often? Confused

StuffThem · 04/07/2020 14:42

mine is increasing her prices by 10%. She's supplying hand gel, masks, gloves and all the Eva cleaning products to clean her salon (of 1 chair and a sink) down between each customer. She's leaving 30 minute gaps between customers to be able to clean and ensure nobody crosses on the path. She's had no income for 3 months and will only be able to work to about 60% of previous capacity. I've got absolutely no problem with the price increase, and I'm very grateful for what she's doing to keep us all safe. She's booked out and I haven't even bothered trying to get appointment because I can happily live without a cut until the end of the year if I need to, and I know others are more desperate.

Your hairdresser's price increase is less than mine. Be grateful that you are able to go and get your precious roots done again at £58 every 17 days.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 04/07/2020 14:42

I'm planning on colouring my hair from now on and only going for a cut, I realised just how much money I can save with pretty much the same result.

Also, not having my hair coloured there will save me a lot of time as well. And I realised that I don't need a cut as often as I do a colour, so that will save me even more.

I'm also going to bring my own mask when I go.

NellePorter · 04/07/2020 14:43

I would pay them any amount of money, if only I could get an appointment Grin

WeAllHaveWings · 04/07/2020 14:43

@user1497207191

It is a difficult one and increasing their prices is at their risk. We have a well known local driving instructor, ds is on the waiting list for when he turns 17, saying he will be raising the cost of lessons from £28 to a whopping £40 a lesson as he needs that to make up for the lost time cleaning cars in-between each leaner and for cleaning products, so he can earn the same as he did before.

The advice for driving instructors is to have a 30 minute "break" between lessons and also to clean all contact points between lessons. That reduces the number of lessons an instructor can do in a working day. Hence, cost per lesson has to increase.

Yes, clearly I get that, I even said he was charging more to make up for lost time cleaning between Hmm. My point that you have missed is the risk he takes charging so much more to ensure he doesn't take any hit at all on his income, when others have had to, is students/parents go elsewhere and don't come back.
SimonJT · 04/07/2020 14:45
@SimonJT did they say why that was? Just wondering really. Not that stressed about it, just never really understood why the big gap for basic styles!
To be honest I can’t remember, but my brain is saying it was one of the female dancers from strictly.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/07/2020 14:52

My hairdresser is supplying everyone with a personal pep kit. Disposable towels, gloves, mask and small hand gel. That way they know everyone has the right kit and it’s one use, instead of people bringing in random ppe of their own. They aren’t charging but then again they’re a huge business and their costs are high anyway so presumably they can absorb it. I wouldn’t expect the same for a smaller venture. In another note, my car is due to go in for its service and MOT at a local dealer that I have used for twenty years. They’re fabulous. They will be cleaning the car thoroughly in and out before they start work on it to ensure it’s safe for them and they will then be cleaning in thoroughly in and out before I get it back to make it’s safe for me. This has increased their costs so they have asked if customers would make a voluntary donation of GBP10.00 to help them. I’m willing to do so because I want to support them and I want them to be there for another twenty years.

SophieGiroux · 04/07/2020 14:53

If you normally give a tip then just stop doing that, use the tip money for the ppe. Problem solved!

lilgreen · 04/07/2020 14:56

Did they tell you when you booked? That is a cheek. Got mine this week and don’t expect to pay as I’ve been asked to bring a mask.

sanityisamyth · 04/07/2020 15:01
@sanityisamyth not quite as long for me I usually go once a year. Might be twice the f I'm going on holiday or something but that's all. I'm one of these that once my roots come through I just let the colour grow out and go back to my natural colour. Certainly couldn't comprehend paying nearly £60 every couple of weeks for it doing. That's 2 weeks rent for me
It's certainly a lot of money. I've never died my hair (it's naturally stripey!) so maybe I'm just unaware of how much it costs but every 2 weeks seems excessive.

MotherMorph · 04/07/2020 15:08

For the OP who is a loyal customer and usually spends a fortune with the hairdresser, maybe she feels that loyalty should be rewarded. However the hairdressers (and most other businesses) are working in new ways, adding additional cleaning chores, buying extra kit, facilitating ways of SD (all at a cost to themselves) and will also have customers like me, who get their hair cut far more infrequently (2-3 times a year) and wont have any supposed credit to qualify for PPE.

WeMustGetOffTheMountain · 04/07/2020 15:09

No, they are not CF.

YABVU.

HeIenaDove · 04/07/2020 15:14

My hairdresser is adding a small charge for PPE I dont mind at all Shes a bloody good hairdresser and hasnt put her prices up since 2007 (ive been going there since 2013) I have my roots done wash, blow dry and straighten. Im not going back yet though. I cant bear the idea of wearing a mask in a hot salon in the summer especially while getting a blow dry. I DONT expect to be let off wearing a mask I would not want to put anyone at risk. Its not only being hot and uncomfortable in the heat. I had recurrent facial impetigo for nine years (i had it five times) Caused by stress and humidity. I was told this was the case by GPS. And this was without a face mask. Underneath one would be a perfect breeding ground for the bacteria that causes this. It sometimes colonises in the nose. After getting some advice from an RGN on here and a Boots pharmacist i bought some hibiscrub which i will dilute and use should i need to wear a mask in a medical setting but im not putting myself through that for a hair appointment. Or the high street should this be brought in for shops.
Its no ones fault. Its just the way it is. Luckily my hair is in bloody good condition apart from the grey coming through. No split ends and i never use heated tools at home......not even a hairdryer and i dont load it with product. Though i have been using the L"oreal Magic Retouch root spray. My fringe is almost cheek length but i just pin it out of the way.

But i dont blame my hairdresser for putting her prices up. Not at all. i may go back around October time when its not so humid.

iklboo · 04/07/2020 15:15

@SimonJT - DH pays £10 for haircut (short back & sides, tidy on top), eyebrows clipped, beard trimmed. Decent job too. We're just outside Manchester.

HeIenaDove · 04/07/2020 15:16

i was having mine done every five weeks.

StuffThem · 04/07/2020 15:19

Did they tell you when you booked? That is a cheek. Got mine this week and don’t expect to pay as I’ve been asked to bring a mask.

It's not just about a mask Hmm

HeIenaDove · 04/07/2020 15:20

As i was typing the long post Sky News showed someone at a basin in the hairdressers pulling her mask down under her chin.

DH commented...............Yeah that wont last.

Sunnytimesahead · 04/07/2020 15:22

Unless you have huge margins on whatever you are selling or supplying your business could not possibly survive the added PPE costs you are claiming to absorb. You will soon come to realise this.
I think you are a CF expecting your hairdresser to somehow absorb the costs of gloves, masks, visors, aprons, sanitisers, cleaning thoroughly between every customer which will take at least 15 minutes. Plus they can only have half the customers in the salon at one time so they will not have their usual customer footfall every day.

How do you think not supplying teas and coffees which work out at pennies per customer will actually balance out the costs? 🤔

I suggest you shop around for a cheaper salon, buy box dye and learn how to cut your hair yourself or go grey. Otherwise suck it up!

Dougalthesyrianhamster · 04/07/2020 15:23

You’re being massively ripped off! @AuntyBess

Dougalthesyrianhamster · 04/07/2020 15:25

@AuntyBess £58 every 17 days?!?! Unless it’s gold plating your hair, then you’re definitely being ripped right off

onceuponatimer · 04/07/2020 15:28

Maybe they can't afford to absorb the extra costs. They have been closed for over 3 months and hairdressers don't usually earn a lot.

Surely if you can afford to spend that amount of money on your hair every month you can afford a few more pounds for PPE.

undercoveraessedai · 04/07/2020 15:29

@LizzieMacQueen

I tried google for an answer so expect it is No, but are there not grants for small businesses to cover additional costs for PPE?
Hahahaha - no.

And masks and gloves have nearly tripled in price since before lockdown.

AuntieMarys · 04/07/2020 15:37

I go every 5 weeks for roots touch up ...quite happy to pay the £3 PPE my hairdresser is charging.

AuntyBess · 04/07/2020 15:38

This is a big chain btw.

Absolutely understand small businesses rationale.

after reading some of the later posts, I think I would have been completely on board with a £5 price increase related to safety measures re having fewer customers. But stating it as paying for PPE items it what made me immediately think CFs.

The phrasing is what's made me full of hmm

OP posts:
TARSCOUT · 04/07/2020 15:39

I quite often would use a box dye but would go for a proper cut and even colour occasionally. Having naturally curly hair I invested in a pair of thinning scissors just before lock down. Between those and using the time wfh and not meeting clients I tried a different box colour. I actually won't have any need to go to the hairdressers ever again. DP has cut the length at the back so I'm all set.

What I would say however is that I wouldn't be paying additional for PPE. Disposable aprons are c5p each and gloves 7p each.
