To think hairdressers are CF?

Passing on PPE charge to customers.

Angry

Have been going 30 years to this chain.

In the last 10 since going grey, I've visited every 17 days damn you fast growing hair currently £58 per visit. Then hair cut every 3 months at approx another £50.

AIBU to think they should absorb this cost?

They have been ripping you off every two weeks touching up your colour for nearly £60 a pop but you are moaning about paying extra for PPE for a limited period of time Grin

They have had no income or limited funds for months whereas clearly you aren't on the bones of your arse. Use a box dye and get it done every 6/8 weeks.

rosiejaune · 04/07/2020 15:42

You wouldn't have grey roots if you stopped dying your hair entirely; then it would just be grey all over. In the meantime, there are headscarves if the transitional stage bothers you. That approach is free, and no PPE required.

AuntyBess · 04/07/2020 15:43

I'm enjoying the contrast between some posters saying "you need to support - they've had 3 months no income" and "get a box dye".

I really don't mind paying extra for the increased safety/fewer customers. Is just it was presented as "£5 extra for your disposable PPE".

I think a PP mentioned not giving a tip then. That would be disadvantaging the staff to punish the business owners, and that I wouldn't countenance.

Well its not exactly a necessity is it?

Alsohuman · 04/07/2020 15:49

Yes it is.

Sunnytimesahead · 04/07/2020 15:51

OP will you just get over the wording of it being for PPE! What did you want them to do list every single item they will now have to charge for and every additional step they will need to take for hygiene? The charge is obviously for all costs associated with Covid.
Please just get over it and find something else to get in a tiswas about!

Sunnytimesahead · 04/07/2020 15:51

Also OP what is the business you run out of interest? How are you managing to absorb PPE costs?

AuntyBess · 04/07/2020 15:52

Yes it was probably a shorthand! They had many phone calls to make I reckon Wink

Okay good you have accepted this now.
How about you answer my other question?!

Iwantacookie · 04/07/2020 15:56

I've visited my hairdresser today. Pixie crop though so not much hair. Charged me normal price but I did tip her as I think she deserves it after 3 months of forced closure and now has to work later to fit not as many clients in. I dont think ide pay any more than £5 for covid charge considering I'm in and out in under 10 minutes.

netflixismysidehustle · 04/07/2020 15:58

Not at all.
It's a temporary charge and I don't know if this is true but I'd worry that a free mask would be worse quality than one I paid for.

nextnamex · 04/07/2020 16:08

absolutely not. my hair has gone up 20 pounds from what it used to be for now. I don't mind at all - bring your own or do your own hair.

bringbacksideburns · 04/07/2020 16:13

You are quibbling over a fiver for a temporary period of time and complaining about a tip when you clearly can afford it.

Funny how many will pay without kicking up a fuss You sound ridiculously high maintenance OP.

@AuntyBess

This is a big chain btw.

Absolutely understand small businesses rationale.

after reading some of the later posts, I think I would have been completely on board with a £5 price increase related to safety measures re having fewer customers. But stating it as paying for PPE items it what made me immediately think CFs.

The phrasing is what's made me full of hmm

Because you really think thatt £5 will cover the fact they will less customers?!? Which area are you working in that the difference is counted in £5. I have no choice than to reduce the number of clients by half to cover for. Cleaning etc... our barber only takes one booking per hour. That will not be covered with £5
QuestionMarkNow · 04/07/2020 16:17

I am also doubt you have a business if you can’t see that tbh

LondonJax · 04/07/2020 16:18

Mine's charging £4 PPE. I only have mine cut every 8 weeks and don't colour any more - the grey is blending like highlights now and actually looks very nice so why waste cash? So that works out 50p a week. She has said I can bring my own if I want to with no charge but I can't be bothered for that small amount.

But then my hair cut is only £26 - mine's short, a bit longer than a pixie cut.

squanderedcore · 04/07/2020 16:21

That seems like a lot of hair cuts op.

Suggest you find a cheaper hairdresser. I have (in a previous life) been to some v expensive hairdressers in three capital cities and imho the hairdresser I have now (local traditional salon around the corner) is just as good a cutter as any of them. Also home colouring has improved a lot recently (check out e-salon or Josh Wood).

Also, hairdressers are at risk of catching Covid-19 from their clients so not unreasonable to charge a little danger money.

So you take your money and make your choice.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 04/07/2020 16:28

Hi OP. I run a beauty business and when we are allowed to reopen, I will ask my clients to wear masks.

If they choose to turn up without a face covering, they will be charged £1 for a mask or they can rearrange their appointment at the end of the already very long waiting list.

It's your call. YABU.

Isitbedtimeyet4 · 04/07/2020 16:32

I do feel slightly bad for my husband, we use the same salon and it’s £5 per appt PPE charge, I honestly won’t notice this as I’m having the full works and it’s costing £100+, but his is only £10 so it’s a big hike in prices for him! But I don’t think they are being unreasonable, some of them are struggling to stay open as it is!

MadameMeursault · 04/07/2020 16:37

YABU. It’s an extra cost to their business. They’ve had 3 months of reduced income. Your hair probably looks terrible! You need them. Pay up!

Timeandtune · 04/07/2020 16:39

Extract from email from my hairdresser.
We have heavily invested in PPE, visors, masks, disposable towels, gown, aprons, and shielding screens and the added costs of sanitisation products to be able to provide a sterile safe environment.

We have also had to stagger teams and appointments and allow extra time to sanitise each workstation in between clients and work to social distancing which has reduced our normal capacity. We have made to decision not to increase our prices at present but will add on a Covid surcharge of £5 to each client visit which will help to cover our costs. This is a temporary measure which will be in place until trading

ExhaustedBeyondBelief · 04/07/2020 16:41

£58 per 17 days

Then

£50 every 3 months

Suck it up.... Or do your own hair

ExhaustedBeyondBelief · 04/07/2020 16:42

Dentists are the same....

The businesses are keeping you safe as well as themselves

People are so tight !

ZezetteEpouseX · 04/07/2020 16:49

YABU that you cannot grasp that "absorbing the cost" actually means "putting your prices up".
