To think hairdressers are CF?

Passing on PPE charge to customers.

Angry

Have been going 30 years to this chain.

In the last 10 since going grey, I've visited every 17 days damn you fast growing hair currently £58 per visit. Then hair cut every 3 months at approx another £50.

AIBU to think they should absorb this cost?

I'm sure a woman could find a barber to give her a short back and sides every month or two for a tenner.

Beawillalwaysbetopdog · 04/07/2020 14:16

Sorry posted too soon, there are 3 barbers in my town. None will cut women's hair even though it's a 'boys' haircut.

ittakes2 · 04/07/2020 14:17

Hairdressers have been closed but still owe rent and taxes for that closed period. I think it’s ok they are passing pee costs on. I think you go to an expensive hairdresser though

Exactly this! My DHs barbers wouldn’t have me, they do men only. I’m jealous because it’s a really cool place with beer and motorbikes and they do men’s mental health sessions.
ZezetteEpouseX · 04/07/2020 14:18

I think it's just the contrast between my business absorbing PPE costs and necessarily reduced footfall for safety

not sure why you blame others for making different business decisions. Even (most) dentists are passing on the cost, and you could argue they are not a luxury service.

I am also amazed that you visit a hairdresser every 17 days!

ineedaholidaynow · 04/07/2020 14:21

Has your business been shut for 3 months OP?

MaggieAndHopey · 04/07/2020 14:21

@ChickenDrumstick @Beawillalwaysbetopdog barbers will indeed cut women's hair. I've had mine cut at a barber for about 5 years now. Granted, not everyone will do it so it is best to phone ahead and check, otherwise there's the awkwardness of being turned away (which has happened to me).

These days barber cuts have got pretty fancy though. I usually get a skin fade at the sides and a messy, textured top. It's easily as technical a cut as any I've had at a hairdresser but a fraction of the price. (a bit more than standard barber cut though - £20 from £10, because time consuming to get the fade right)

cologne4711 · 04/07/2020 14:23

My hair salon is only adding £2 for PPE. Seems reasonable, though I am not sure disposable gowns are necessary and definitely not very eco-friendly. If hot soapy water is good enough for our hands, it should also be good enough for gowns.

Walkaround · 04/07/2020 14:23

AuntyBess - sorry, I’m not feeling much sympathy for someone who happily spends such an obscene amount of money on their hair in the first place! Hairdressers do not earn big sums of money, so if you are that bothered by the practices of a large, profit-making chain that doesn’t pass enough of its profits on to its hairdressers, then look for a hairdressers where the costs are more reasonable - or accept the cost of getting your hair done by the person you want.

PETRONELLAS · 04/07/2020 14:24

That’s going to add up isn’t it. Can you use your own?

JoeCalFuckingZaghe · 04/07/2020 14:24

My vets did this. There was no mention of that £10 ppe charge when I booked the appointment and we couldn’t even go in the building and we socially distanced outside so I was pretty unhappy they just snuck this charge onto the final invoice.

I’d sort of understand at a hairdressers though.

cologne4711 · 04/07/2020 14:25

I wonder how they justify this under the Equality Act.

You have long hair but are also in posession of a penis so we'll cut your hair.

You have short hair but have a vagina so we won't.

And what on earth what do they do with a transperson?

Confused
Beautiful3 · 04/07/2020 14:26

Would you consider a semi permanent once a month? If you don't like it, it fades out as you wash it. I used on during lock down. I'm normally a dark blonde with light blonde highlights. Someone on mumsnet recommended a semi ash blonde by nice n easy, its brilliant and covered up my grey hairs. I going to carry on using it. it's only costing me a fiver a month!

Newkitchen123 · 04/07/2020 14:26

OP what is your business?
My mobile hairdresser said her prices are increasing but I've no idea but how much. Been with her about 15 years and I think there's only ever been one increase.
You think it's unfair that you're being asked to pay for ONE lot of PPE. but you think it's OK for the hairdresser to pay for all of them?

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 04/07/2020 14:27

58 quid every 17 days?! Shock

Erm, doesn't sound like you need to watch the pennies so suck up the cost or go to one that doesn't charge?

RedToothBrush · 04/07/2020 14:29

AIBU to think they should absorb this cost?

I make it that you go to the hairdressers to get your hair dyed 21.4 times a year. Thats £1241.20. You then get your hair cut once every 3 months for a yearly cost of £200. That makes it that you spend £1441.20 on your hair alone in a year.

So for the total number of visits you have (I assume you get your hair cut at the same time as dyed), at an extra £5 a time, you are moaning about £107.

Whats with the attitude that you are so saintly in absorbing extra costs? You are a business person. You understand how you make a profit and how the difference between being able to do that and not able to do that isn't the same in every industry don't you? Perhaps its because you have larger margins to begin with which make this possible. And thats without considering all the costs that they WILL have had to absorb through being shut for so long and the other extra measures they have to put in place to be 'covid safe'.

If you are that tightfisted you could just stick a bag on your head and then you won't need to worry about the cost of your haircut OR the cost of PPE.

Problem solved.

I mean its not as if you can't afford to do so if you are ALREADY spending over £1400 on your hair during the course of a year.

TheMarzipanDildo · 04/07/2020 14:31

I see so many hairdresser bashing threads on here and it pisses me off no end.

My mums a mobile hairdresser. She has been out of work since March and she won’t get any money from the government for after the middle of June. She has just spent a fortune on PPE to protect her customers.
She is always busy, charges standard rates and makes a grand total of £12,000 in a normal year.
Evidently this is too much for some people.

Shhhhh223 · 04/07/2020 14:32

YABU

I own a dog grooming salon, for the first month back I charged a extra £5 on top for PPE and that was only a small contribution to the costs I’ve occurred

Our clients per day have to be halved as only so many allowed at a time in the salon. I have to pay the staffs wages and all the bills including all the very expensive PPE but making half the money I would before lockdown

This is not greed on the salons part it’s just trying to get through this strange time

DoraemonDingDong · 04/07/2020 14:32

My hairdresser usually runs a small discount for local residents. They've decided to stop offering that, to cover the cost of PPE for staff and clients.

I'm happy with that arrangement, and if they increase the price too, that would be reasonable - they have staff and premises to pay. They won't be seeing the same volume of customers for a long while I suspect, they've got to try and keep themselves afloat.

If I don't like it I can find a cheaper salon.

Lozz22 · 04/07/2020 14:32

@sanityisamyth not quite as long for me I usually go once a year. Might be twice the f I'm going on holiday or something but that's all. I'm one of these that once my roots come through I just let the colour grow out and go back to my natural colour. Certainly couldn't comprehend paying nearly £60 every couple of weeks for it doing. That's 2 weeks rent for me

DoraemonDingDong · 04/07/2020 14:32

@AuntyBess I'm impressed with your dedication and spending on your hair :)

SimonJT · 04/07/2020 14:34

@ChickenDrumstick

I don’t think this is a problem, they have to get their coats back some how.

What does bother me is how expensive women’s haircuts are in comparisons to men’s. My DH has a much more complicated haircut than me and he pays £10. I have an inch off the bottom of mine and a fringe trim and everywhere it seems to be £25+. I don’t have tea or coffee, I don’t read mags, I don’t have it washed/blow dried/styled/straightened, so why the extra cost? I find it really unfair and sexist how cheap men’s hair is to cut in comparison to women’s! Tried to go to his barbers but they only do men!

Sorry off topic there!

Where does he go for a £10 haircut?

I pay £60, £40 of that is a skin fade and the rest is a beard trim.

There was a oneshow segment recently where quite a lot of barbers wouldn’t cut womens hair even if they had a ‘mans’ style.

Notnownotneverever · 04/07/2020 14:35

No. I think you are a CF to expect them to absorb the cost of PPE. They are trying to keep you and them safe in a global pandemic that they didn’t cause. Why should they go out of business because you can’t pay a few more pounds.

danni0509 · 04/07/2020 14:36

The barber shop near my dh work has put there price up from £9 a haircut to £18 a haircut, I wish I was joking...!

Queue of young lads waiting half way down the street this morning when we drove past.

ChickenDrumstick · 04/07/2020 14:38

@SimonJT did they say why that was? Just wondering really. Not that stressed about it, just never really understood why the big gap for basic styles!
