To think hairdressers are CF?

Passing on PPE charge to customers.

Angry

Have been going 30 years to this chain.

In the last 10 since going grey, I've visited every 17 days damn you fast growing hair currently £58 per visit. Then hair cut every 3 months at approx another £50.

AIBU to think they should absorb this cost?

OP posts:
Timetospare · 04/07/2020 12:35

I think it’s reasonable.
PPE isn’t optional and costs have rocketed due to the increased demand.

Qwicky · 04/07/2020 12:35

Ha sorry , I read you op as you're grey not colouring it. It's still extortionate. IME staying too loyal for too long often makes you a soft target.

LockdownLump · 04/07/2020 12:36

Every 17 days!!

Yankathebear · 04/07/2020 12:36

Why should they? You are choosing to go every 17 days. You would cost THEM a fortune in PPE! How much does it add to what you already pay?

I feel like my hairdresser could charge anything right now and I would pay it because I missed her.

FizzFan · 04/07/2020 12:37

They could absorb the cost, yes; but then you'll find your haircut costs £65 per visit.
And what the fuck are you having done to your hair that costs £58 every 17 days?

This.

I am also very grey but went blonde, much easier to manage than trying to stay brunette!

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 04/07/2020 12:37

It depends on how much extra they are charging as to if they are CFs.

I'd be happy to pay though just so it keeps mine in business and keeps us all safe. I dread the day mine decides to give up working. She's fantastic.

KitKat2020 · 04/07/2020 12:37

Do root touch ups cost £58 ?????

MrsGrindah · 04/07/2020 12:38

OP ..have you been reading the news? We are ALL absorbing the costs in one way or another! Suck it up...it’s with us for a long time yet sadly.

AllsortsofAwkward · 04/07/2020 12:38

I agree some of the prices I've seen are a pisstake they arent the only ones to have struggled. I think more people will just dye there own hair most have managed in lockdown.

Bluntness100 · 04/07/2020 12:38

If it’s cut every three months and you’re not colouring it, what the heck is she doing every seventeen days for fifty eight quid?

UltimateWednesday · 04/07/2020 12:39

I've had this issue too, I expect most of us have.

My hairdresser offers both a cut and blow dray and a "creative" cut and blow dry. You can't book only a cut, the creative one ia for people with lots of hair who want it bouncy/curly. My hair is very short and takes less than 10 mins to "blow" dry, including texturising with products, so I always feel a bit ripped off anyway, although I love the cut, so I do keep going.

Now they are only offering the creative blow dry which is £58!! They say it's because they're having to offer hour long slots because of the precautions but I guarantee I won't be in that chair for more than 30 min, if that.

I'll suck it up for now, I suppose they have to find some way to make this work but I will certainly be making enquiries elsewhere if they don't reintroduce the standard option quite soon.

FizzFan · 04/07/2020 12:39

If you can afford what I calculate to be the thick end of £1.5k a year in hairdos, you can surely afford a few bob on top for PPE. Maybe go once or twice a year less?

dottiedodah · 04/07/2020 12:40

MintyChoc1 I cut and colour my own hair at home! Use a well known brand and a subtle shade of blonde .Leave the youngsters with the purple /pink colours !

Brandaris · 04/07/2020 12:40

At a careers guidance lesson many, many years ago there were info cards with careers, average earnings etc. Everyone drew one and then you could also choose from a list of necessities and luxuries, like basic or more luxurious housing, hobbies, private health care and education etc. Each of the necessity and essential list had a price associated so you could see the cost over a year and work out what you could get for your wages in that career.

I drew hairdresser. I was devastated to see the income. I could just about cover the necessity list, but then had nearly nothing for luxury. I was gutted I couldn’t afford a pet.

Turns out most hairdressers are self employed and rent their chair from the salon. They have to pay for their products, equipment etc. So that expensive haircut you have had mostly goes towards their chair rent etc and they might get between minimum wage or a bit over if they’re more skilled and charge more.

So nope, I don’t think minimum wage self employed or employed workers should have to pay for their own ppe or the clients ppe. It’s an extra charge that needs to be absorbed somewhere. If they appear to not be charging it directly to the client then don’t be so naïeve, they’ll just increase the cost of the service without saying it’s a ppe charge so you’ll be paying it one way or another. At least if you have a clear ppe cost you can at least ask if you can bring your own to reduce the cost.

EnlightenedOwl · 04/07/2020 12:41

Yes they are I've binned mine off. Managed without them for three months

Popc0rn · 04/07/2020 12:41

YABU to go to the hairdressers every 17 days, that's insane.

Just go grey or box dye it!

arethereanyleftatall · 04/07/2020 12:41

Yabu.
It is entirely up to them how they run their business.
And entirely up to you whether you go or not.

Summer41 · 04/07/2020 12:42

If you have to get your roots done every 17 days I would consider changing the colour so you can go longer before it's noticeable. That's not even once a month, that's ridiculous!

I think it's fair they add the cost of the PPE to your bill, it's to protect you too and they've lost three months of business already why should they lose even more money.

UltimateWednesday · 04/07/2020 12:42

What exactly is the PPE that costs so much? Gloves and masks are pennies when sourced in commercial quantities. Visors are reusable.

3catsandcounting · 04/07/2020 12:42

I agree with PP; anyone who can afford £58 on a root touch-up every 17 days shouldn't be quibbling about a few quid for PPE.

Popc0rn · 04/07/2020 12:43

Also YABU to call hairdressers CF for trying to run a profitable business.

SimonJT · 04/07/2020 12:43

The only cheeky fuckers are the ones who are too tight to keep their hairdresser safe.

My barber came round this morning and cut mine, my boyfriends and my sons hair. He needed apron, fp3 mask and visor. If we didn’t pay for his PPE my sons haircut would have essentially be free.

Carolduckingbaskin · 04/07/2020 12:43

If you have to go for a root touch up every 17 days I’d be changing hairdresser anyway.

tara66 · 04/07/2020 12:44

They always have been CFs.

SeasonFinale · 04/07/2020 12:44

Even wearing your own mask does not preclude them from having to change their PPE in between each customer and deep cleaning between each customer. You can choose not to go or to go. But accept they are free to set their own prices. If, for example, shampoo was to triple in price they would factor that cost into their price so a PPE charge is entirely reasonable too.
