To think hairdressers are CF?

Passing on PPE charge to customers.

Angry

Have been going 30 years to this chain.

In the last 10 since going grey, I've visited every 17 days damn you fast growing hair currently £58 per visit. Then hair cut every 3 months at approx another £50.

AIBU to think they should absorb this cost?

Mine have said they're not increasing costs (which they could do to try to recoup lost income) but are charging £3 for PPE.
They could have just increased their prices but are making the cost visible and being upfront.
Fair enough I think. It's costs to have the PPE.
I'd prefer I wore it and that they did too so it's a bit of a no brainer. Especially as it's actually a tiny percentage of what the cut/colour costs. Much less than the tip I'd give.
If you object to the cost, I'm sure there are plenty of cheaper places out there.

Popc0rn · 04/07/2020 12:56

Just done some maths...

365 ÷ 17 = 21.47

£58 x 21.47 = £1245 (the cost you currently pay)

£5 x 21.47 = £107 (the extra cost due to PPE)

...this is the most bonkers thing I think I've read. So you're happy to pay over a grand on your hair normally, but not the extra £100 overall for the year (and it probably won't go on for a whole year anyway!)

MatildaTheCat · 04/07/2020 12:56

My vet charged me £15 for PPE during lockdown. He wore latex gloves and a face mask and I strongly suspect he wasn’t changing the mask between each client.

That did sting a bit. I wished it wasn’t itemised on the invoice and just included in the call out fee.

I don’t think my hairdresser is charging but I’d happily pay.

SimonJT · 04/07/2020 12:56

@GabriellaMontez

£5?!!! I came on to say YABU but that's too much. What kind of PPE are they using!?
You’ll be hard pushed to find fp3 masks for less than £5 per unit
vanillandhoney · 04/07/2020 12:57

@AuntyBess

Thanks, everyone seems to have handed me my study arse.

I think it's just the contrast between my business absorbing PPE costs and necessarily reduced footfall for safety, and this industry not absorbing.

They're also saving on hot brink costs Wink

But you're choosing to absorb the costs. They're not.

Both equally valid choices.

I'm also choosing to absorb the costs and the additional PPE needed for my business is minimal. But not everyone can afford to absorb that kind of costs, especially as the cost of decent PPE has skyrocketed recently.

Esspee · 04/07/2020 12:57

It is so easy to colour your roots yourself. I use half a pack of L’Oreal hair colouring which is so much gentler than the stuff hairdressers use. Cost about £6 and the superb conditioner which comes with it leaves my hair in great condition.

AuntyBess · 04/07/2020 12:57

Not using a box dye - too many highlights.

I I'm well aware it's my choice Grin it's totally my only vice.

I've been using the root spray over Lockdown (think I caused a national shortage) and seen a price hike on those.

WorraLiberty · 04/07/2020 12:58

You've stated 'Hairdressers' in your thread title and now despite lots of people saying they've been told to bring their own PPE, you've still said 'this industry not absorbing' the costs.

It's not all hairdressers, so if you're unhappy just vote with your feet.

Pugdoglife · 04/07/2020 12:59

I absolutely support them in charging for PPE, they've had no income for months and will now have reduced incomes because of all the rules. I'd rather pay a few extra pounds than see them go out of business.

IndecentFeminist · 04/07/2020 13:00

Ppe charge is one thing. One place I saw said that if you wanted more than an inch off they would charge for a full restyle instead of just a trim. That's a bit cheekier!

Popc0rn · 04/07/2020 13:00

They're also saving on hot drink costs Wink

I don't think a few saved teabags are gonna make up for the fact they can only have half the usual of customers in at one time!

Honestly I'm fascinated to see what your hair looks like after over 100 days if it grows that fast!

earthyfire · 04/07/2020 13:00

I have my hair appointment booked in now for 2 weeks time no PPE fee has been mentioned. The thing that's annoyed me about my hair salon is the fact that didn't call as priority, those who had their appointment cancelled the week the salons closed.

BlusteryLake · 04/07/2020 13:00

Lots of things are going to cost more than before coronavirus. That is the price of still being able to do them in some form. You can't expect the same costs when providers are operating at lower capacity and having to comply with extra hygiene procedures.

suzy2b · 04/07/2020 13:01

I go to my local college£10 for cut and blow dry

Whenwillthisbeover · 04/07/2020 13:01

my hairdresser cant be saving much on hot drinks, their tea is shit but they do a good cut and colour so I will be going back! Grin

Spidey66 · 04/07/2020 13:01

I do think the OP is being unreasonable as these businesses are just that....businesses. Not charities. They have to absorb the extra costs somehow.

Having said that, how different are the responses here to the recent thread about holiday lettings where people were aghast that check in was later than normal because of the extra cleaning and were demanding the owner give a discount to make up for it!

Mumsnet is an odd place sometimes

YesItsMeIDontCare · 04/07/2020 13:02

I think you should go, have it coloured silver and get a fabulous cut which will look 10x better than repeatedly dying it. Then embrace the grey as it grows through.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 04/07/2020 13:02

What would happen if you went every 18 days? Or 21? That might cover the extra cost.

I don’t think they are CFs in any way. I feel sorry for any public-facing business at the moment.

MotherMorph · 04/07/2020 13:02

My DS barbers have increased the price from £11 to £15. I can understand why because they can have fewer people in the shop. We will probably go slightly less often as my income is also more limited now, and I have learnt to make it look borderline reasonable at home!
The last time I went I gave them my card when it came to pay, and they didnt take cards, I had to run to the nearest cash point and come back.
Now they only take card so will have had to pay for the facility to do that as well as PPE, less customers, and missing out on 3.5 months custom.

Timeandtune · 04/07/2020 13:02

My hairdresser has said they will charge a £5 COVID surcharge per visit but otherwise keep prices the same. I think that seems perfectly fair.

thetaleunfolds · 04/07/2020 13:03

Their cost of doing business has gone up, so of course the amount they charge will increase too.

vanillandhoney · 04/07/2020 13:03

They're also saving on hot brink costs wink

Well, no, because they're now having take half their usual number of customers, and having to do increased levels of cleaning in between clients. They must be losing a fortune even though they have the same opening hours and running costs as before.

TheWernethWife · 04/07/2020 13:03

I've finally had mine done today, was due week after lockdown so was desperate. My lovely hairdresser put the cost up by £2.00, I said no way and gave her another £3.00, very happy to pay an extra £5.00

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 04/07/2020 13:04

£58 every two weeks?! I think they saw you coming lmfao

Darcydashwood · 04/07/2020 13:04

It a business cost so imo fair enough they need to charge for it - whether as upfront cost or built into their general fees.
