Passing on PPE charge to customers.

Angry

Have been going 30 years to this chain.

In the last 10 since going grey, I've visited every 17 days damn you fast growing hair currently £58 per visit. Then hair cut every 3 months at approx another £50.

AIBU to think they should absorb this cost?

Have to get their coats back? I meant costs!!

Alsohuman · 04/07/2020 13:29

Mine is using disposable gowns, they’re binned after each client. How does that work with taking your own?

rwalker · 04/07/2020 13:30

I think the problem is they do have extra cost for ppe but a reusable visor pr of gloves and face mask doesn't cost £5 .
Could of been put across better by salon as they will be reducing numbers and increasing cleaning think if it was call covid charge
you wouldn't feel as ripped off .

DanielRicciardosSmile · 04/07/2020 13:32

Not the point I know, but I'm confused by 17 days rather than 14 or 21. Doesn't that make things awkward, going on a Monday, then a Thursday, then a Sunday etc etc?

SimonJT · 04/07/2020 13:32

@DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong No more tragic man bun!

sashagabadon · 04/07/2020 13:32

I think it's fair enough. I am happy to pay extra

It is a difficult one and increasing their prices is at their risk. We have a well known local driving instructor, ds is on the waiting list for when he turns 17, saying he will be raising the cost of lessons from £28 to a whopping £40 a lesson as he needs that to make up for the lost time cleaning cars in-between each leaner and for cleaning products, so he can earn the same as he did before.

The problem is a lot of his learners (or parents) are bringing in a lot less than before too, he needs to at least appear to take some of the hit or risk losing pupils altogether. £40 a lesson is ridiculous (in Scotland).

When ds hits 17 in 6 months time, if we can afford driving lessons still, even if restrictions are reduced and he has reverted to his previous prices again, I'll be going elsewhere.

Peregrina · 04/07/2020 13:34

My hairdresser has now started asking for deposits when you book. They never used to, so no doubt this is to cover no shows. I don't know if they did walk in cuts - probably a few but most of their clientele are women and I think they tend to book anyway.

DominaShantotto · 04/07/2020 13:35

At mine at the moment. No surcharge but they were very open from the start that they would be more for the first repair the damage appointment in terms of the extra time and bleach needed etc (and my hair grows fast and is very bleached so I’m normally in every 4 weeks religiously - it’s my big indulgence having a high maintenance hair style).

Contacted us before to ask we had been at the diy measures so they knew what they would be dealing with and gave the revised cost and I have utterly no issues with it

GinWithRosie · 04/07/2020 13:35

I have to ask OP...why 17 days?

It's just such a weird number 🤷‍♀️

Why not simply 'every 3 weeks'?

Odd 🤦‍♀️

(And yes, YABU)

thedancingbear · 04/07/2020 13:36

I think it's entirely reasonable for them to pass the cost of PPE on. Their cost of doing business has gone up, so their prices have as well. It doesn't really matter if it's presented as a separate charge or just bundled in with the cost of the hairdo.

The OP is free to take her business elsewhere obvs. But I doubt there are many hairdressers short of custom at the moment.

Babyroobs · 04/07/2020 13:36

@ChickenDrumstick

I don’t think this is a problem, they have to get their coats back some how.

What does bother me is how expensive women’s haircuts are in comparisons to men’s. My DH has a much more complicated haircut than me and he pays £10. I have an inch off the bottom of mine and a fringe trim and everywhere it seems to be £25+. I don’t have tea or coffee, I don’t read mags, I don’t have it washed/blow dried/styled/straightened, so why the extra cost? I find it really unfair and sexist how cheap men’s hair is to cut in comparison to women’s! Tried to go to his barbers but they only do men!

Sorry off topic there!

Can you go where he goes ?
wonderpants · 04/07/2020 13:38

Cut and blow for daughter's short hair was £15.
Wet cut (washed before hairdresser's arrival- no blow-dry) now £25.
🤔

I started out disagreeing with your post, until I read all the way to the end!

Yes, it would be better if the extra costs to customers were explained in the context of the changes to the business model overall, it’s not just a mask and a pair of disposable gloves that is making it cost more, it’s that these services are having to reduce the numbers of customers they can fit in per day, because they have to be spaced out and the stations need to be cleaned in between.

When you consider everything, I’m amazed that hairdressers haven’t doubled their prices, rather than just add a fiver or a tenner!

newbathroomforme · 04/07/2020 13:42

*"I have to ask OP...why 17 days?

I like to have my coloured around 17 days (it cost £15) at 21 days the grey is very obvious as I have very dark hair.

Grandmi · 04/07/2020 13:42

What do you expect !! As you were going to the hairdressers so regularly just think about the fortune you have saved over three months !! So think about the amount of income the hairdresser has lost . I most definitely expect the losses to businesses and the cost of PPE to be the reason for higher bills .

blueskys72 · 04/07/2020 13:43

My mobile hairdresser has gone up from £60 to £85, so I'll to have it done every 8-10 weeks now instead of 4-5. I think almost 50% increase is a lot 🤷‍♀️

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 04/07/2020 13:44

you probably won't be able to get an appointment every 17 days, so that may contribute to the saving you clearly need to make.

Failing that, try stretching it to every 19 days - that will be 3 visits less each year, saving £174 a year at the old rates. Shock horror, stretch to once every three weeks, and £232.

Or as others have suggested, embrace the grey.

gingercat02 · 04/07/2020 13:46

My salon are changing £4 per appointment or you can buy a washable one for £14. I have gone for that as DS and DM can use it too. Why on earth should they bear the cost. Covid 19 is extreme circumstances tbf

JovialNickname · 04/07/2020 13:46

My local salon is hiking up the cost of a colour due to the cost of the extra dye they will have to use! I think this is cheeky as they charge a high rate anyway, due to including lots of extras such as a glass of wine when you visit, head massage, neck massage, nice magazines etc. I understand that obviously they won't be able to offer those things now and I don't expect a corresponding reduction in the price, however charging me for a teaspoonful of extra dye because I'm visiting after 18 weeks rather than my usual 12 seems like CF territory to me!! I wouldn't have actually minded an extra charge for PPE or even a friendly email saying they've raised the prices to be able to keep the salon open, but I think charging people who are paying £100-150 for a colour for a scraping of extra dye is taking the piss.

AlessandroVasectomi · 04/07/2020 13:50

I can’t really comment on ladies’ hairdressing, but I’m amazed at how my barber makes a living. £11 for a haircut, or £9 for pensioners and members of the armed services. At about 15 minutes per haircut, in ordinary circumstances that’s about £40 per hour. So when I go for my haircut, I shall not object to paying a COVID surcharge or however they present it. With my hair having grown so long, I’m thinking of asking for an estimate first!

justasking111 · 04/07/2020 13:51

Then do not go OP. Dentists are doing this too, no worries here, not their fault. Going to hairdresser every 17 days, you need your hair examining Grin

DC3dilemma · 04/07/2020 13:52

Save your spite for the corporate arseholes making a mint out this crisis and keeping it offshore, so that not even the tax benefits our economy.

Your average high street hairdresser is not going home to drink champagne and roll around in the green he is she is making from doing your roots and hitting you up for the cost of the PPE you need to wear because you decided getting your hair done is an essential.
