To be disgusted that Subway (sandwich bar) are not making staff wear masks?

They have all the ingredients uncovered in front of them and could cough or sneeze or even just breathe on it constantly.

I was told they aren’t wearing them as they’re not ‘mandatory’. They seem to give more of a shit about their staff being a bit uncomfortable in a viral pandemic than the risk of spreading the disease through their food and going out of business!

DS has been longing to go there since lockdown as it’s his favourite place to eat so I took him today and was gobsmacked none of the staff were masked up.

AIBU that ALL good serving staff should be in masks?

And “simply wipe them” is not a solution. They steam up as soon as you put them back on.

namechangetheworld · 04/07/2020 17:18

Eurgh, I'm with you OP. Gross.

Mrhodgeymaheg · 04/07/2020 17:22

I think you need to soak your sandwich in Dettol before consumption and get the blow torch out.

To be honest, I am sick of this. OH and myself have sworn that if we go in a shop, and weirdo security guards start following us around barking orders at us like we are beneath them we will leave and never go back. Some people's egos have gone off the scales with this pandemic and have lost all self awareness or the ability to assess risk.

Pinkblueberry · 04/07/2020 17:22

Coronavirus isn’t spread by simply breathing ffs Hmm unless they are coughing, sneezing or blowing onto your food then it’s fine. I hope you haven’t been ordering any takeaways - I doubt everyone working in your local takeaway kitchens have been wearing masks this whole time.

We need to reach a point where people just make their own choices depending on their risk assessment. To look at the issue from another viewpoint, perhaps it is a good thing that an employer has enough respect for its staff not to force them to wear masks if they don't want to.
And just as Subway has made that decision, anyone who is anxious about it can, in turn, can make a decision not to go to Subway.

Interesting paper here on modelling of the R rate with imperfect mask wearing.

From the abstract:

  1. Masks, even with suboptimal efficacy in both prevention of acquisition and transmission of infection, could substantially decrease the reproduction number for COVID-19 if widely used.
  1. Widespread masking may be sufficient to suppress epidemics where R has been brought close to 1 via other measures (e.g., distancing).
  1. “Assortment” within populations (the tendency for interactions between masked individuals to be more likely than interactions between masked and unmasked individuals) would rapidly erode the impact of masks. As such, mask uptake needs to be fairly universal to have an effect.

This simple model suggests that widespread uptake of masking could be determinative in suppressing COVID-19 epidemics in regions with R(t) at or near 1.

@Pinkblueberry
Coronavirus isn’t spread by simply breathing ffs
Various studies seem to suggest that it is.

It is also spread by tiny droplets expelled when talking (and Subway staff certainly talk to you, right over the food, when taking your order).

Buying unsealed food from somewhere that doesn't require staff to wear face masks is idiotic.

Why? People are entitled to make risk assessments for themselves, but this is risk assessment on the risk to others. That ought to be part of the risk assessment for the business "what is the risk for my customers of exposure to the virus from my employees".
It's not an individual decision. ( our risk assessment at work is aimed at safest process for employees and customers.)
After all, if you were a surgeon you couldn't just decide you didn't fancy wearing mask and gloves, and if you did yes - your employer should force you!

MrsDrudge · 04/07/2020 22:16

Actually Coronavirus is a respiratory virus and one of the ways it spreads is by BREATHING.
So no way would you get me in there if servers are not wearing masks.

Gwenhwyfar · 04/07/2020 22:59

"To look at the issue from another viewpoint, perhaps it is a good thing that an employer has enough respect for its staff not to force them to wear masks if they don't want to."

So if the employer was a construction company, would it be a good thing for them not to force their staff to wear hard hats if they don't want to?

BetteDavisWeLuvU · 04/07/2020 23:08

Exactly as @chancechancechance says!

As a total aside I always think its properly grim how the topping’s just salt out there all-day, I know they're refrigerated slightly but still, I think they should be in makes for sure, but I'd be more worried about food posinong tbf!

BetteDavisWeLuvU · 04/07/2020 23:11

@Mrhodgeymaheg you nugget, you think it's egotistical to wear a mask in pandemic!! Jesus I've heard it all now 😂😂. In sure they'd be absolutely devastated to loose your custom 😂 - I think its you who needs to check your ego!

Serehawk · 04/07/2020 23:14

We are in US. DD18 works for local Subway. They are required to wear masks.

okiedokieme · 04/07/2020 23:17

Wearing masks here. In pub today all staff in masks or visors too

DisobedientHamster · 04/07/2020 23:41

YABU to have gone to Subway. Boak.

Reluctantbettlynch · 05/07/2020 07:46

Gloves are not helpful unless used to do one thing and then binned immediately. My relative was told in a&e not to wear gloves as hand washing bare hands was cleaner.
Masks in hospitality are not great; increased face touching is a problem, anyone symptomatic would not be allowed to be in work and their shift members would be quarantined.
As mentioned up thread, commercial kitchens are a very hot environment and again it would increase sweating and face touching. I prefer, personally, to see good hygiene.
For hair dressers etc who need to be very close to you then masks / visors are ideal

corythatwas · 05/07/2020 10:40

In our local KFC they certainly have.

Since recent evidence suggests this particular virus is mainly airborne (breathing and speaking as well as coughing and sneezing), increased hand hygiene is not going to solve the problem. Washing your hands is an excellent thing in itself but it does absolutely bugger all to stop airborne droplets.
