To be disgusted that Subway (sandwich bar) are not making staff wear masks?

They have all the ingredients uncovered in front of them and could cough or sneeze or even just breathe on it constantly.

I was told they aren’t wearing them as they’re not ‘mandatory’. They seem to give more of a shit about their staff being a bit uncomfortable in a viral pandemic than the risk of spreading the disease through their food and going out of business!

DS has been longing to go there since lockdown as it’s his favourite place to eat so I took him today and was gobsmacked none of the staff were masked up.

AIBU that ALL good serving staff should be in masks?

OP posts:
trappedbytheangel · 03/07/2020 17:54

Is it because all the precious snowflakes might feel a bit uncomfortable and would expect the government to provide them because they can’t figure out how to make one themselves hmm?

You're sounding increasingly ridiculous OP! Must be miserable working in a hot sandwich shop all day in a mask. If you are that concerned, stay home and make your own sandwich.

WwMILd · 03/07/2020 17:58

Soubriquet

Bit different to supermarkets, as you can choose to clean stuff when you get it home.

Wouldn’t fancy washing a Subway in the sink or Miltons.

Eveta · 03/07/2020 17:58

Subway is shite anyway (imo). But yes I wouldn't eat there if they didn't seem to be taking precautions.

Alsohuman · 03/07/2020 17:59

More like they refuse to pander to all the precious snowflakes who don’t realise that very few staff in any food outlet are wearing masks. The only places I’ll wear one is where it’s mandatory so that’s at the hairdressers next week and nowhere else.

😂😂

@Mrsmorton

Thoughts and prayers OP.
🤣🤣🤣
Allstoppedup · 03/07/2020 18:05

I mean, it's literally just a sandwich and you can make a fairly decent replica at home. 🤷 I get why someone might be uncomfortable with them not wearing masks but honestly even if they were, the potential for cross contamination would be ridiculously high anyway. Just don't go.

IAintentDead · 03/07/2020 18:07

@CarrotCakeCrumbs

I hate to break it to you but I work in a fast food franchise and nobody wears masks their either apart from a couple of the drivers as is their choice. There are lots of safety precautions in place like screens and extra vigilance on hand washing but actually wearing a mask is more likely to make the person making the food touch their face without thinking about it. They don't wear gloves either because hand washing is more effective and gloves give a false sense of security.
Gloves and masks reduce transmission WHEN WORN CORRECTLY AND CHANGED FREQUENTLY

There is plenty of research to show that they increase transmission when not worn correctly.

Currently the chance of transmission is so low that unless you were very unlucky you would have to cuddle a couple of thousand people to have much risk. The flu will kill more people including children this winter than Covid will for the next 4 or 5 months in the UK.

You think something is risky then don't do it - or buy it. Be big enough and brave enough to do your own risk assessments and live by them. No need to worry then about people with a more realistic view.

Allstoppedup · 03/07/2020 18:07

Also DYING at the OPs use of the term "snowflakes" whilst simultaneously posting about not being able to access a food service where they literally put a sandwich together in front of you. 😂

LilyPond2 · 03/07/2020 18:11

I agree with the OP that any staff preparing food that is going to be eaten immediately without being cooked ought to be wearing masks. I also think that customers should be required to wear masks when they order. The posts along the lines of, "We went to a sandwich shop where the staff didn't wear masks and we didn't catch Covid" are just plain silly. If you knew someone who crossed a busy road without looking and didn't get hit by a car, would you take that as evidence that crossing roads without looking is safe and sensible behaviour?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 03/07/2020 18:11

I know it’s a novel idea, but couldn’t people just learn to use masks correctly? Other places seem to manage to make masks mandatory and reduce transmission rather than increasing it.

Ragwort · 03/07/2020 18:13

Don't go there then; our employer (retail but not food) has provided face masks and gloves - entirely optional, no one has chosen to use them.

YABU. Nobody is forcing you to eat out, if you are that concerned then make your own food. You can easily make subway style food at home.
DontStandSoClose · 03/07/2020 18:14

I'd be more concerned my son's favourite place to eat was subway 😆, cheap processed meat on horrible bread yuuum. You could just make him a sandwich at home, then you can wear full ppe making it 😆. It's not exactly a secret recipe ham and a bit of salad on bread is it.

Babs709 · 03/07/2020 18:17

Yabu

OhSweetNuthin · 03/07/2020 18:25

Yabu for wanting to eat at Subway in the first place 🤮 their food tastes like pap

userxx · 03/07/2020 18:26

@Allstoppedup Brilliant isn't it 🤣🤣

Mistlewoeandwhine · 03/07/2020 18:30

Chefs are one of the occupations most likely to die from CV. I’m not sure why but obviously the kitchen environment must encourage it. For everyone laughing, it’s no joke when people are losing their jobs left, right and centre due to the R rate and hence continuing restrictions.
Also my healthy 14 year old was extremely ill with the damn thing and almost hospitalised. Laugh all you want. You wouldn’t be laughing if it was your child or spouse.

fascinated · 03/07/2020 18:30

That’s disgusting. I won’t eat takeaway unless they’re wearing masks and I see it happen.

zonkin · 03/07/2020 18:32

As others have said, Subway was always grim even before covid.

The economy is fucked anyway. And there was a "plan" for a second spike to ease the pressure on the NHS during the first wave.

And what do you think is going to happen tomorrow on "super Saturday"? People won't be wearing masks

CarrotCakeCrumbs · 03/07/2020 18:33

@IAintentDead I am not disputing that they reduce transmission when worn correctly and replaced as necessary- but realistically in a busy take-away where you are dealing with less staff due to social distancing, and more orders due to more people being at home and customers who couldn't care less about the staff who work there and think nothing of giving them abuse if their food happens to be a bit later than usual - the face masks and gloves are not likely to be worn and replaced correctly in that environment.

ArcheryAnnie · 03/07/2020 18:35

Were you wearing masks, OP?

WitchQueenofDarkness · 03/07/2020 18:40

Well I'd be exercising my right not to buy one if I am not happy with how the food is being prepared.

We'll be heading off on a trip tomorrow. I intend to take our own food and coffee for the journey and we won't be stopping at any motorway service stations en-route.

It's all about risk management now as far as I'm concerned,

Ori37 · 03/07/2020 18:43

Perhaps the answer to your very first-world problem is not to go to Subway. It’s causing you a disproportionate amount of stress.

borntohula · 03/07/2020 18:44

Are you for real? Were you bothered about hospitality staff coughing and spluttering all over your food before you heard about covid, or are other viruses fine?? I mean, disease isn't a new thing.
