To be disgusted that Subway (sandwich bar) are not making staff wear masks?

They have all the ingredients uncovered in front of them and could cough or sneeze or even just breathe on it constantly.

I was told they aren’t wearing them as they’re not ‘mandatory’. They seem to give more of a shit about their staff being a bit uncomfortable in a viral pandemic than the risk of spreading the disease through their food and going out of business!

DS has been longing to go there since lockdown as it’s his favourite place to eat so I took him today and was gobsmacked none of the staff were masked up.

AIBU that ALL good serving staff should be in masks?

Yes that would hugely put me off. I couldn't fancy it. Slightly different when the food is going to be cooked, but in a Subway it's not and as you say, those sandwich fillings sit there all day right under the sandwich-makers' noses (literally!).
You wouldn't expect workers in a food factory to be maskless, and neither should these guys be. More fool those who eat there (and pity the medical professionals who might get drafted in to care for them).

Itsjustabitofbanter · 03/07/2020 17:23

If you’re that concerned about covid then what are you doing in a subway in the first place?

DominaShantotto · 03/07/2020 17:23

Well I'm perfectly happy with slightly mediocre serving staff myself.

However ALL drive thrus should have the Costa drive thru drop down bucket for those of us with short arms who fuck up the drive through window distance - that is a fucking awesome invention.

LeJollieJauneOiseau · 03/07/2020 17:23

Surgeons seem capable of wearing a mask for several hours in order to maintain patient safety. Such a lot of fuss from people over wearing a mask. It’s not that hard to do and if it reduces the spread, why not?

Surgeons chose to go in to the medical profession, staff at Subway didn't choose for a pandemic to wreak havoc upon the world thus making some wearing of masks, in certain circumstances mandatory.

hashtagbollocks · 03/07/2020 17:24

Go to subway and DIE!!!!!!!!!!
( isn't it just sandwiches anyway?)

I have been through twice and both times still had to get out of the car Blush

@Theluggage15

Wearing masks won’t eradicate a virus. Precious snowflakes who demand staff wear masks can go elsewhere.
I can't tell with this type of comment if people mean what they say. Masks are proven to help reduce spread, and if we reduced the spread enough it could be eliminated, and that would be good.

Obv not just wearing masks, but in conjunction with other things, masks can help. I think reducing CV is a good idea.

GrannyBags · 03/07/2020 17:26

😂 @BarbaraofSeville

I make ‘Subway’ at home as my son begged to go cos all his mates did and then wanted tuna mayo and sweet corn. He wouldn’t touch salad or anything so I was too tight to buy him any more. I use those part baked baguette things.

@LeJollieJauneOiseau

Just think how fortunate we are that some people are capable of putting other people’s well-being ahead of their own comfort. It’s a light face mask not handcuffs. Personally I think it’s just because people aren’t used to the idea of wearing them. In Asian countries they are worn frequently even without the threat of a pandemic.

reducingfootprint · 03/07/2020 17:27

just because you can go out now lockdown has been relaxed, it doesnt mean you should
if you are worried then stay at home still like many others

Brieminewine · 03/07/2020 17:29

I believe other sandwich retailers are available?
But FYI I had subway last week and I survived someone breathing in the vicinity of my salad!

TrickyKid · 03/07/2020 17:30

I've only been to Subway once pre covid and watching how they prepared the food it's clear hygiene is not a big priority for them at the best of times.

And I personally do wear a mask on my reasonably long commute to work on public transport, we also use them at times at work and as a woman over 50 they can be really awful when you overheat and feel a bit sick.

But thanks for making assumptions about me.

Yes, you're being ridiculously unreasonable.

Jellybeansincognito · 03/07/2020 17:32

You’re not going to get coronavirus from eating food that has the virus on it.

You’ll be fine if you wash your hands after and don’t wipe your hands all over your face whilst you’re eating your sandwich.

Dillydallyingthrough · 03/07/2020 17:32

YANBU - agree with everything AnneOfQueenSables said.

M0mmyneedswine · 03/07/2020 17:35

Our local subway has made masks compulsory

Idontlikewednesdays · 03/07/2020 17:35

I’d be just as worried about them putting gloves on, touching people’s money, the till, and god knows what else, then putting their fingers in all the food. It’s got to be one of the most unhygienic places to buy. That’s before Covid.

Surgeons don't have to deal with customers. I work in a shop that does hot and cold sandwiches, coffee etc and as well as making the food we have to make sure customers stand in the correct place, distance from each other, step away from the counter and don't come in more than two at a time. Then we have to tell them to go out a different way than they came in. This is enough of a bloody nightmare - I cant imagine having to do it in a mask
Soubriquet · 03/07/2020 17:41

What are you doing about supermarkets then?

Cos the one I work in, no one wears a mask and they handle all food when it’s being put on the shelf or being picked by a shopper for online shopper

HereForYou2020 · 03/07/2020 17:44

I became bored when OP starting calling people snowflakes because they aren't wearing masks

Get a grip OP - don't go there if it bothers you so much. So much hand wringing

OldLace · 03/07/2020 17:45

I've only been in a Subway twice (both times with a friend purchasing)
Both times the hygiene looked dodgy so I didn't purchase for myself.

I did buy a cheese scone in a small independent deli last week.
The server didnt wear a mask. She picked up the scone with tongs but then split and buttered it and put it in a bag, then took my cash all with the same ungloved hands, then rearranged the scone pile.
I walked out of the shop then decided to bin it.

nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut · 03/07/2020 17:48

You know how hot it gets in there? They have staff fainting already in the summer months never mind with masks on. Besides, wearing a mask wrong is worse than not wearing one at all. You mustn't touch it or pull it down once its on, if you take it off, it must be discarded and a new one used. Can you honestly see shops paying for at least 10 masks per day in order for them to be used safely? Visors are no good as the heat near the ovens make them fog up.

Where I work we are given one each and told to wear it round our neck and pull it up if a customer comes in. I refused. It puts the wearer at risk doing that.

I think its enough that they temperature check their staff every day and practice good hygiene.

EnlightenedOwl · 03/07/2020 17:50

What's the problem
if the rest of the country took this sensible approach maybe we wouldn't be in the mess we are in now. How many jobs have gone today out of interest? There's going to be more redundant than dead of covid.

Gogogadgetarms · 03/07/2020 17:53

I’d avoid it because of this.
I have to say when I get my costa each morning I’m reassured that all their staff wear masks, as do I.
