To be disgusted that Subway (sandwich bar) are not making staff wear masks?

They have all the ingredients uncovered in front of them and could cough or sneeze or even just breathe on it constantly.

I was told they aren’t wearing them as they’re not ‘mandatory’. They seem to give more of a shit about their staff being a bit uncomfortable in a viral pandemic than the risk of spreading the disease through their food and going out of business!

DS has been longing to go there since lockdown as it’s his favourite place to eat so I took him today and was gobsmacked none of the staff were masked up.

AIBU that ALL good serving staff should be in masks?

I am surprised because it makes them look bad. Wearing masks is a kind of visual sign that they Take The Virus Seriously. I think most companies want to look like they are trying.

I'm wouldn't be so concerned about the food and me as a customer, but it does mean if one staff member has it they are more likely to infect colleagues.

Masks should be more widely worn as they cut transmission.

I am Hmm at the breathing comments, given that it is a respiratory disease.

Bagelsandbrie · 03/07/2020 16:58

It’s not every subway. They are franchises and operate independently I think. But yes there should be some sort of overall rule. Is there? I have no idea. Anyway we went to our local one and they were all wearing masks and gloves. It was fab. I love a Subway.

CarrotCakeCrumbs · 03/07/2020 17:00

I hate to break it to you but I work in a fast food franchise and nobody wears masks their either apart from a couple of the drivers as is their choice. There are lots of safety precautions in place like screens and extra vigilance on hand washing but actually wearing a mask is more likely to make the person making the food touch their face without thinking about it. They don't wear gloves either because hand washing is more effective and gloves give a false sense of security.

InfiniteSheldon · 03/07/2020 17:00

I popped in today for a vegan sub and they had masks on honestly everyone is trying to find their way in thus new world if you don't like the way a shop behaves walk out but trying to whop up online boycotting is a bit low.

LeJollieJauneOiseau · 03/07/2020 17:01

Have you tried wearing a face mask or shield for hours on end Op? It's more than a bit uncomfortable ffs.

Has all common sense left the building in the last three and a bit months? It's fairly simple to just not go there, fast food is not obligatory.

HeddaGarbled · 03/07/2020 17:02

“Face masks must be worn correctly, changed frequently, removed properly, disposed of safely and used in combination with good universal hygiene behaviour in order for them to be effective.
Even when users do comply with these rules initially, research shows if users wear them for long periods of time they gradually become slack and are less likely to do so.”

CoronaIsShit · 03/07/2020 17:04

I suppose the point is why has the government not made face masks mandatory? Obviously not going to get any intelligent responses on hereHmm< that was how my face was.

If this virus is serious enough to trash the economy, decimate a lot of people’s livelihoods and force kids out of school for months, why is it not serious enough to make people wear masks to prevent the spread and eventually eradicate it?

Is it because all the precious snowflakes might feel a bit uncomfortable and would expect the government to provide them because they can’t figure out how to make one themselves Hmm?

I want a Subway now.

GrannyBags · 03/07/2020 17:09

There are plenty of intelligent responses on here. Just because you don’t agree with them - or are you being deliberately rude?

WwMILd · 03/07/2020 17:10

Probably far more likely to get salmonella from them than CV.

Personally I wouldn’t want either, and they don’t look that appetising anyway!

lalahotpants · 03/07/2020 17:11

Did u wear a mask to subway op?

BarbaraofSeville · 03/07/2020 17:12

Also, isn’t Subway a fairly easy thing to replicate at home

I don't know, their bread is nothing like any real bread I've ever seen. I suppose if you leave all your salad items on the window sill for a few days, you've made a good start.

Theluggage15 · 03/07/2020 17:13

Wearing masks won’t eradicate a virus. Precious snowflakes who demand staff wear masks can go elsewhere.

PickAChew · 03/07/2020 17:14

Our subway has a 2* food hygiene rating and their stuff smells vile so doesn't bother me.

CatEatCatWorld · 03/07/2020 17:15

Our local kebab shop has been open all through lockdown and we've had it at least twice a week (dd1 loves the garlic and chips) and none of the staff wear masks, and tbh it doesnt even look like any extra measures were put into place and the owner was giving free pizzas to the nhs and not social distancing (photos put on fb) 🤷‍♀️ didn't stop us lol.

BarbedBloom · 03/07/2020 17:15

I agree with you OP and wouldn't eat there. My husband is wearing a mask as I am shielding at the moment and we can't get a delivery slot. He has had lots of nasty comments, which is probably why our area had one of the highest levels of cases. Even during lockdown people around here were having parties and mixing on the street

Hahaha! You put it so much better than I did. Subways always feel a bit grubby, to me.

So you having a strop about some Subway staff not wearing masks is intelligent is it?

It's a sandwich shop not a bloody Covid ward.

oh DD will be super jealous if you got one! Our local isn't doing any of the vegan "meats" or cheese right now. She was most disappointed on Sunday!
ThreeCubesBalancing · 03/07/2020 17:19

I am wearing a mask right now. It is more than a bit uncomfortable. It is hot, my mouth is mega dry and I can't see properly. I don't mind if Subway staff aren't wearing masks.

LeJollieJauneOiseau · 03/07/2020 17:19

And I'll tell you about another horror, the staff in Pret that made my coffee this week weren't wearing masks despite breathing near the rather delicious looking pastries that I refrained from eating because the covid lard to,d me not too should I have thrown a wobbly about them too?

BenScalesIsAGod · 03/07/2020 17:20

Surgeons seem capable of wearing a mask for several hours in order to maintain patient safety. Such a lot of fuss from people over wearing a mask. It’s not that hard to do and if it reduces the spread, why not?

BenScalesIsAGod · 03/07/2020 17:21

@ThreeCubesBalancing

If you can’t see properly you’ve got it on wrong. Over mouth and nose, not the eyes.

Kazzyhoward · 03/07/2020 17:22

Personally, I think Subway is pretty unhygenic at the best of times - the staff don't seem to take cross-infection avoidance seriously. Yes, they're at their own "stations" in the counter, but then start "helping" eachother without changing gloves etc., so one minute the cashier is handling coins, the next s/he is touching the lettuce. Pretty grim really.

AnneOfQueenSables · 03/07/2020 17:22

YANBU but MN is full of people pretending they're going on holiday, rushing their DCs back to school and don't care if people cough all over their sandwiches Hmm

Masks are mandatory in shops in Scotland. And I'd have thought that food preparation places would have had to compile Covid risk assesments before re-opening. If Subway have risk assessed, it's amazing that they missed all the research about masks reducing transmission. It seems as though they might not have risk assessed at all.
