To be disgusted that Subway (sandwich bar) are not making staff wear masks?

They have all the ingredients uncovered in front of them and could cough or sneeze or even just breathe on it constantly.

I was told they aren’t wearing them as they’re not ‘mandatory’. They seem to give more of a shit about their staff being a bit uncomfortable in a viral pandemic than the risk of spreading the disease through their food and going out of business!

DS has been longing to go there since lockdown as it’s his favourite place to eat so I took him today and was gobsmacked none of the staff were masked up.

AIBU that ALL good serving staff should be in masks?

Well for one reason or another the government haven't made masks mandatory so people don't have to wear them.

Therefore it's up to the individual if they want to interact/deal with someone who isn't wearing one. If you don't like it leave it. I went to Starbucks today and they weren't wearing them either, seems like a mixed bag.

ComeOnBabyPopMyBubble · 03/07/2020 22:05

Ignorant people like you are the reason we may be stuck with wave after wave of this virus until we find a vaccine Bubble.

Yes , I will single handedly bring the UK to it's knees!

Breathes all over the thread.

zonkin · 03/07/2020 22:33

There won't be a vaccine any time soon. So do we stay in lockdown for another year or so until a vaccine is found?

TheHighestSardine · 03/07/2020 22:51

Other countries have re-opened because they managed the virus and eliminated it.

We've got a fucking clown show in charge, and are what, third worst in the world or something? Absolute shitshow.

Countries that wear masks have a far higher rate of managing than countries that don't. And yes, there's published evidence that it's not just a random correlation.

HeIenaDove · 03/07/2020 22:54

Something is going to have to be done about wearing masks in hot humid environments

Because another thing that an employer wouldnt want is an employee passing out onto a hot plate. And the employee wouldnt want that either. A mask making someone even hotter is going to increase the likelihood of this.

ActualStork223 · 03/07/2020 22:57

Spoon...Don't go to subway,? Maybe just let the rest of us get in with life,? Just duck off in the words of spell check?

MintyMabel · 04/07/2020 00:25

If you can’t see properly you’ve got it on wrong. Over mouth and nose, not the eyes.

Mine makes my glasses steam up.

TheMurk · 04/07/2020 00:34

I really wonder how we didn’t all drop dead from viruses hiding out on pickles and multiplying in the chipotle sauce pre-March 2020?

It’s a miracle we are all still alive.

Well that is known be of the point, covid is a more problematic virus than the ones we usually encounter.
chancechancechance · 04/07/2020 00:58

*kind of the point

PickAChew · 04/07/2020 01:06

If glasses steam up simply wipe them. People are making too may crap excuses.

Mybglasses scream up constantly unless I'm just sitting on a bus and not moving, in a mask.

I'm sure you wouldn't want someone constantly wiping their glasses as they prepared your meatball sub.

Jeremyironsnothing · 04/07/2020 01:12

I'm with you, op.

BaronessBomburst · 04/07/2020 01:12

Covid-19 is a respiratory disease.
Were you planning on inhaling the sandwich?

Stupidest comment on the thread, good work!

Littleposh · 04/07/2020 02:13

You do realise that all food service staff are trained to avoid infection from that route, and many others, right from day one in their job, yes?? You don't like it, make your own.

agonyauntie2020 · 04/07/2020 02:19

I'm really shocked by some of the answers on here. Honestly, it reminds me of reading threads in February and March when people were saying it was stupid to be concerned about the virus, it was going to turn out to be nothing.

There are loads and loads and loads of scientific studies showing masks reduce transmission. There are several other countries (mostly in Asia) showing people can and do wear masks successfully in multiple environments (from medical to fast food).

I'm honestly unable to understand why people are being so mean to the OP or saying insane things like the virus is not spread by breathing. Yes. it. is.

OP You have your answer I think as to why the subway workers weren't wearing masks. For some unfathomable reason some people are just not listening to or reading reason.

Maybe it's getting your news/information about the world from echo chambers of social media or something? The government messaging is certainly inadequate.

I would not buy food anywhere where I suspected workers have not been masked (see: cruises, care homes, church-gatherings, parties etc).

And as someone said higher up in thread, Subway is a franchise. You can call around and find one where they are masked for your son.

Sorry you've had this amount of responses which are just... astoundingly mean and (sorry people, I am not usually rude) but poorly researched.

Haenow · 04/07/2020 02:26

I sat in a hospital waiting room for 3 hours yesterday. I’ve never seen so many people (patients not staff) touching their faces; adjusting their masks and messing about with the masks. Honestly, the masks didn’t make me feel any safer. If anything I was more worried because people had their hands on their faces more than usual.

Amibannedorwhat · 04/07/2020 04:14

@Kazzyhoward

Personally, I think Subway is pretty unhygenic at the best of times - the staff don't seem to take cross-infection avoidance seriously. Yes, they're at their own "stations" in the counter, but then start "helping" eachother without changing gloves etc., so one minute the cashier is handling coins, the next s/he is touching the lettuce. Pretty grim really.
Yes I agree! Went in one local to me once a staff member came in washed his hands, dryer them with that blue roll stuff went up to the counter, knocked all the bits of salad that had dropped onto the chopping boards back into the tubs using his blue roll 😳 the manager watched him. Yeah he’s washed his hands but still it’s a bit grim...then bloke on the till gets in a muddle so opens all the subs to see which is which, after he’s been handling money, handling them with no gloves on...this was pre Covid and still turned my stomach but maybe that’s just me 🤮
Amibannedorwhat · 04/07/2020 04:17

Also there’s a coffee shop within my place of work Ive seen staff come back from putting rubbish out, back from smoke breaks and back from going to the toilet all without washing their hands before handling customers food. Just decided it’s best not to think about what goes on or we’d never eat anything 🤢

Lemononachair · 04/07/2020 10:18

I work in hospitality, making and handling food. I'm not wearing a mask or gloves. I've been doing this job a long time and am well versed in contamination and infection control
and was doing all the necessary things to prevent the spread of diseases long before covid. Very often gloves (and I suppose masks too) give people a false sense of security and make them complacent about hand washing, etc.

I wash and sanitise my hands very regularly, don't smoke, and ensure I don't touch my face. All things I do normally anyway!

I could not wear a mask in here. It's not a matter of being 'a bit uncomfortable', the temperature in a commercial kitchen even with fully functioning fans and ventilation systems can regularly top 40degrees+, we need to drink regularly to stop becoming dehydrated.

It might not be like that exactly at that particular place, but it's possible.

This absolutely!!

It’s not an excuse, I sill wear a mask, just explaining how it can affect your being able to see. I’m fortunate I can take my glasses off and still see ok.

unchienandalusia · 04/07/2020 17:04

Just got back from the pub. No one was wearing a mask. Bar staff, waiter, kitchen team or patrons.

All well organised with social distancing in place, one way system, hand sanitiser and wipes available at every point. Menus wiped between each customer.

Everyone happy and having a lovely time.

These are the measures that will help stop an increase in spread. Not masks worn incorrectly and gloves that carry germs from place to place.

Get a grip OP.

corythatwas · 04/07/2020 17:09

People can make their own choice to eat there if they feel the risk is low, or go somewhere else.

Do NHS staff get the choice not to treat patients who have been infected by completely unnecessary mask-wearing?

Ds works for KFC. They have to wear masks. It is hot and uncomfortable but he totally gets that this virus has a very high rate of transmission and that it is part of his job to do his best to avoid that.

Since recent investigations suggest it is primarily airborne, hand-sanitising alone isn't going to keep people safe. This is not norovirus, it behaves in a different way.

RabbityMcRabbit · 04/07/2020 17:11

God people on MN have changed their tune somewhat-at the beginning of lockdown people would be accused of being MURDERERS and single-handedly spreading the virus if they went to the shops for an ice cream😕
