To be disgusted that Subway (sandwich bar) are not making staff wear masks?

They have all the ingredients uncovered in front of them and could cough or sneeze or even just breathe on it constantly.

I was told they aren’t wearing them as they’re not ‘mandatory’. They seem to give more of a shit about their staff being a bit uncomfortable in a viral pandemic than the risk of spreading the disease through their food and going out of business!

DS has been longing to go there since lockdown as it’s his favourite place to eat so I took him today and was gobsmacked none of the staff were masked up.

AIBU that ALL good serving staff should be in masks?

@Theluggage15

Wearing masks won’t eradicate a virus. Precious snowflakes who demand staff wear masks can go elsewhere.
This. Vote with your wallet.

It's not the law for staff to wear masks so not much we can do. Can't criticise people who are keeping to the law.

InFiveMins · 03/07/2020 18:48

Go elsewhere.

I will be happy to go to Subway and in fact anywhere where staff don't wear masks.

@BenScalesIsAGod You don't wear glasses, do you?

yaychocolateginandwine · 03/07/2020 18:49

It's only because you see what happens when you buy ' made to order ' ! Just think what goes on behind the scenes with food prep in lots of coffee shops/cafes/restaurants/pubs .............. you wouldn't eat out again ! Like previous posters have said - you have a choice ........

cdtaylornats · 03/07/2020 18:49

Don't they have spit guards to prevent particles getting on the food usually. If they don't why did you ever eat from there?

pennylane83 · 03/07/2020 18:51

People near me were boycotting the local KFC because the staff weren't wearing facemasks. All these people seem to think its safer for the customer if the staff member stands by the 200C fryers for there 8 hour shift sweating profusely into a face mask and then hovering over the food with said sweat soaked mask to hand over the customers order rather than not wearing a mask but adopting all other safety measures such as handwashing and not touching the face etc.

I know which option i'd prefer.

CoronaIsShit

Subway is a franchise. But many are wearing masks. Also if you don't like it, eat elsewhere.

My local one has plastic to the ceiling on customer side. Nothing is open on their side and everything is covered. They are also wearing aprons and masks with their normal gloves.

I think that's okay. Even without masks as long as they don't talk over the food when making it, cough or sneeze, then it's fine.

Oh my goodness @BenScalesIsAGod - do you actually have experience of wearing a mask for long periods?? I have to as I work in a hospital - they are hot and uncomfortable and if you wear glasses they make them steam up!

BenScalesIsAGod · 03/07/2020 18:57

Yes I wear a mask at work! It’s not amazingly comfortable, no. But my point was it’s do-able and if it reduces spread then why not?

PatriciaHolm · 03/07/2020 18:58

Are you in the UK? I ask because I don't think I've ever seen a customer facing café or restaurant worker in the UK wearing a spit guard.
flirtygirl · 03/07/2020 18:58

And I wear glasses and a mask, have done since April when my masks arrived.

If glasses steam up simply wipe them. People are making too may crap excuses.

BenScalesIsAGod · 03/07/2020 18:59

Glasses are an issue definitely. Not everyone in subway will be wearing glasses though. I just don’t understand the reasoning for people piling on OP. The more people that wear masks the better. Especially those preparing food in enclosed spaces. It would protect the staff too.

SoupDragon · 03/07/2020 19:00

Hmm < that was how my face was

With no mask? 😱😷

BenScalesIsAGod · 03/07/2020 19:01

@PatriciaHolm

What’s a spit guard? 😂 you learn something new everyday.

user1471500037 · 03/07/2020 19:02

OP people like you are the reason why this country is such a state - you should hang your head in shame...

mightbealittlebitmad · 03/07/2020 19:02

Being as 0.04% of the community have the virus and those who are symptomatic won't be breathing over your subway I think you're safe.

BobFleming · 03/07/2020 19:05

Meh. I wouldn't care.

I'd rather avoid it altogether if staff were wearing masks. I find them a bit off-putting.

StripeyBananas · 03/07/2020 19:07

Oh dear, three months ago you would have got some very different answers OP!

I assumed people who work in restaurants would be wearing masks too.

GhostTypeEevee · 03/07/2020 19:08

What is the likelihood of catching it from eating a sandwich out of interest?

BillywilliamV · 03/07/2020 19:09

Masks are a panacea, they make it look like the wearer cares. I dont mind if I never see another one outside a hospitsl!

JinglingHellsBells · 03/07/2020 19:09

well, I've never been to or eaten anything from Subway in my life.

Why would anyone?

FrankieDoyle · 03/07/2020 19:12

YABU and just because people disagree with you doesn't make them unintelligent Hmm

LindainLockdown · 03/07/2020 19:13
  1. Subway is Shit, can't even walk past a shop without wanting to puke.
  1. Masks make the wearers think they are invincible and IME it makes them act like fucking idiots (no social distancing etc).
redskittleorangeskittle · 03/07/2020 19:20

All the staff in our nearest subway wear masks and gloves and it is kept scrupulously clean - although it was always kept clean before covid.
