I can't help feeling the main lesson to take away from this thread is don't buy an iPhone/iPad.

They seem to make the screens from spun sugar.

I already knew this tbh.

Thisismytimetoshine · 02/07/2020 23:18

I smashed dh's new iPad screen. He got it replaced; two days later I broke it again. Repaired yet again, and a week later he smashed it.
I think the bloody thing is possessed with an evil demon.

lilstarr99 · 02/07/2020 23:18

Not me, but I bought my mum a gorgeous handmade tablecloth from Portugal and Dad a 25 yr old bottle of port when I went on holiday a few years ago. Mum dropped the bottle on the table - smashed it, soaking the table cloth then chucked it in some water to soak it out - effectively set the stain 🤦‍♀️ 2-in-1

@Mercedes519

Much less impact than many of these but one that stays with me...bought a bag of Percy Pigs. Left the shop and opened the bag so hard the whole bag flew threw the air and went on the floor. I can still feel the disappointment.
But so very, very funny. Grin
Wrenna · 02/07/2020 23:21

Yep. Bought lounge curtains, the last three discontinued pairs. Ironed one panel that had the exact same look but different fiber content and melted a hole in them. Put them up anyway and kind of scrunched them so it isn’t so obvious but I cringe every time I see them and it’s been 10 years!

TeeniefaeTroon · 02/07/2020 23:25

New patio doors. The delivery men put them in the garage, my husband shattered the glass when he took them out to fit them. I was raging 😁

alwaysthinkingofsleep · 02/07/2020 23:32

Pink suede Gazelles when I was 13, played chasey & got grass stains on them 😭 I did replace them as an adult 😊

Tillygetsit · 03/07/2020 00:22

Yes. Dh proudly brought home a brand new all whistles and bells coffee machine. I put coffee in the wrong place and buggered it up for good. He was very understanding under the circumstances.

dayslikethese1 · 03/07/2020 00:49

So the lessons here are: dont use bleach, don't buy an iPhone, don't put laptops on the floor, dont iron and never attempt to carry a cake!

These stories make me feel very stressed Shock

Oh god yes. This memory still stings.

Bought a lovely (I thought) Art Deco-ish granddaughter clock from an independent clock shop for DH's birthday.

Lifting it out to the car with my ancient mother, we messed up and the front door swung open, cracking the glass pane over the clockface. Ruined before we even got it in the car!

To add insult to injury, DH HATED the clock on sight, and declared that it 'probably had woodworm'.

I still have the clock and I still love it, despite cracked glass face which would cost ££££ to replace and not worth it, but I overwound it one year and it doesn't even tell the time any more, still less ring out the quarterly chimes that so entertained us all through the small hours of the night.

My dad once bought a new suit from M&S (£200-ish, I assume). We went into Jigsaw next door and he sat down on a step waiting for me and mum to finish looking around. He placed his suit bag against the wall.

What he hadn't realised is that there were ankle-level halogen lights where he placed the bag and it burnt threw both his suit jacket and trousers. Poor fella. He was so annoyed.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 03/07/2020 01:24

Brand new rocket dog suede boots, put on for first time, just about to go out one evening & feeding baby beforehand, baby puked ENTIRE tummy of milk all over them.

MollyBloomYes · 03/07/2020 01:31

Bought a lovely, unusual skirt in Florida at a craft fair type thing. We were travelling up the East coast. Got to New York before I realised I'd left it on a tour bus. This was pre smart phones so I even went to the hotel business centre to track down the tour company and email them. Unsurprisingly I heard nothing from them.

MindfulBear · 03/07/2020 02:20

Got a brand new Apple Watch. Scratched it in the first 24h and I have no idea how. Spent 3 years looking at that scratch!

Spartak · 03/07/2020 02:30

Corded hedge trimmer from Argos. Lasted about 15 minutes before I trimmed through the cord.

Not 'ruined' but .... years ago I was on the dole. I got £52 per fortnight (I told you it was years ago!!)

So I got my dole money & I went out & spent over half of it on a dress in Top Shop which I'd been looking at for days. Then I went into HMV.
I put my Top Shop bag down & got carried away browsing the music. Then I found the bag was gone! A lady on the other side of the shop had it. I went over and surreptitiously had a look... yes, that was my red Top Shop dress in the Top Shop bag.

I was a polite 17-year-old so I said, "Excuse me, I think that's my bag". She said, "No it's not". In desperation I went to the security guard & said, "That lady's taken my bag with my dress in it". He told me as I hadn't bought the dress in HMV there was nothing he could do. I was only about 17 and I didn't know how to make a fuss, so I watched her walk off with my dress!

Proseccoagain · 03/07/2020 08:25

Bought very expensive pair of champagne glasses to match our (very expensive) wine glasses. Moved to Cyprus for three years, they survived despite being shipped by sea in crates. Same when we moved to Australia, shipped by sea there and back, survived intact (we had good packers). Moved house back in UK. Unpacked and was washing them before putting them away in glass cabinet - smashed one against the kitchen tap. Took ages to find a replacement, but we were in John Lewis a few years later and saw an odd one on the shelf, (they're usually sold in pairs). Asked if it was for sale, and bought it; assistant told us the other one had been accidentally broken, so they had greatly reduced the price to get rid of the odd one.

@Puffalicious

12 years ago now and it still hurts.

Went to the bank to get cash out to pay the house painters. Bank put it in an envelope. Instead of going straight to the car i decided to go to the small shop beside the bank to get drinks/ snacks. Got home and no envelope. Mad dash back to bank/ shop/ examining exactly where I'd parked but to no avail. £900 totally gone.

I cried for days. The only way I got over it was thinking that whoever had it needed it more than I did. Still angry at myself all these years later.

Someone’s probably already said it but I bet that you were pickpocketed 😢
Royalbloo · 03/07/2020 09:10

Oh, man...you've bought a bad back!

TopShop brown suede jacket that was THE MAKING of 17yr old me. Put it on the end bannister. My brother puts a hot coffee cup on it - cue large circle on the back. I was beyond comforting...

@LGY1

Treated myself to a Disney spirit jersey in Florida. Wore it for the plane journey home, got curry on it & it never came out = bin Second spirit jersey from Disneyland Paris; little boy got tomato sauce on it, it wouldn’t come out, I went to town with Oxy action & somehow bleached a patch right at the front = bin THIRD spirit jersey bought on a Disney cruise, got bleach on it whilst angry cleaning the kitchen = straight in the bin

I have never ruined any other item of clothing! I actually shed a little tear when the last one went in the bin Sad

I bought two spirit jerseys from Disneyland California. One a pink aurora with beautiful glittery letters on it and the other a monsters inc. I tumble dried aurora and the glitter stopped glittering. Monsters had thus far survived.

I also bleached a brand new Barbour wool jumper on its first wear. Gutted as it was such a cosy jumper. I coloured it in with sharpie and still wear it to this day.

BriarNorth · 03/07/2020 10:06

Pink Vans shoes. I loved them and wanted to wear them straight away- dropped grease on them cleaning the grill pan after cooking. Tried to get the marks out but failed. Gutted!
However I’ve saved them as “water shoes” for when I’m in the sea or the lakes with my dog.

tinkerbellvspredator · 03/07/2020 11:41

Bought a glass Christmas ornament chosen by DD in Disneyland Paris. Cost about £20 which feels extortionate to me but it was a treat for her as a keepsake. Put bag on floor of ride car and smashed it when the safety bar was pulled up. Luckily I'd heard Disneyland have amazing service and took it straight back to the store and they replaced it!!

LaVieEstBelle159 · 03/07/2020 11:44

@MaddieElla omg the same with the Tower of London poppy - I kept ours on top of a wardrobe, opened the box to look at it while standing on a chair and it slipped out. I’ve glued it back together but it’s ruined and, like you, my stomach twists every time I think about it.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 03/07/2020 12:32

A few years ago we had a trip to New Zealand. Bought two beautiful china mugs in the gift shop at Auckland airport. Transported them both safely back to the UK - then chipped the rim of one of them by knocking it against the edge of the cupboard as I was putting it away.
